Hi,

I am looking into buying a new baby monitor. I am looking for one that you can use either an ac adaptor or batteries for both the baby unit/base and the parent unit/receiver. I need a little more portability then the ones you just plug in offer. Does anyone have any suggestions for a good one or comments about ones you would avoid? There are so many out there. Thanks for the help.

We have a Summer b/w video monitor. It works well for us. The monitor and the camera unit both plug into the wall, no batteries. If I had done my research, I probably would have gone with a portable unit. The monitor is bulky and you have to plug and unplug if you want to take it to another room. Summer does have a portable system which my friend has. It's a hand held device, in color, and they can take it anywhere in the house. It's a bit pricier, but I think worth it.

We have the Graco color video monitor and it works great! You can carry it around like a cell phone if you want to use it portable. It has a great/clear color picture and sound. We have been very happy with this monitor.

This is the baby monitor we have (we got the one with 2 recievers which I highly recommend). It's not expensive and works SO well. I love the night light built into the monitor (which you can chose to have on or off - it doesn't have to be on for the monitor to work) and the fact that the recievers also have lights. You can see and hear the baby. It's amazingly sensitive too. I can literally hear the baby breathing if we don't have on another noise source. We've been amazed by it especially given that it's not a lot of $. I think ours was $39.99 for the dual recievers. The recievers have clips on the back so you can walk around with it. And you can use both the AC adapters that come with it or batteries.

I have the Graco iMonitor w/vibrate. It can be plugged in or runs on batteries (both pieces). The parent piece comes with a rechargeable battery. The distance on it is great! We camp a lot and put our son to sleep in the camper and can go sit at a friend's campfire a few sites away without having any issues with signal interferance.

Hi K.. I purchased the Summer monitor with night vision. It is the best. I am so happy with it. I honestly do not know what I would do without it. It is also so durable. I can't begin to tell you how may times I have dropped it. I even dropped it in the toilet one day. Thanks goodness I had just cleaned it. It still works. It is about $175 at Target. God luck.

K.,
I have the angel care, it's a bit on the pricey side, but I've had no problems with it. It comes with a motion pad for the baby's bed, but I don't use it, I only use the monitor. It has two "parent" monitors which have a base they charge in and it can be carried around once it's charged. I'm able to take it outdoors a good 50 ft from the house. The reception is great and there is no fuzz (the babies room is a good ways away from each of the monitors). The baby unit is not portable and doesn't work unless plugged in, which might be a problem depending on what you're looking for. Hope this helps.

I don't know that I've seen a monitor set that the baby base could be battery operated. I have one made by The First Years that I got at Target that has a stationary plug-in base and two parent receivers that can either plug in or be used by battery. We keep one of them plugged in our room for night time and use the batteries in the other when we are awake and the baby is sleeping. Good luck!

We have one Philips and one Safety First. Both fine--possibly less interference on the Philips model.

As far as portability, I will say this: using the units without the plug will eat up batteries so fast it will actually increase your household budget. We just unplug the unit, take it downstairs and plug it back in.

My two cents.
