Hi B.,
My daughter is also four months old, and that little coughing sound she makes is her laugh! The babbling and cooing sounds are easy to make because they happen more in the mouth, consonants and things like laughter are more guttural and occur in the throat. My little one has even started making a growling sound, she almost sounds like a little machine, but you can tell she is just feeling the sensation in her throat. Often times, a growl will roll right into an adorable squeal. She is just working out the mechanics of it....so, don't worry, it sounds like your daughter is perfectly normal!
Have a great day! D.
Hi B. -
Depending where you live, you should see if the Parents As Teachers program is available. Generally they are through your local school district. They provide free, home visits to track your baby's development and provide great research based ideas. It is an amazing program that will help your child be better prepared for school. In Johnson County it is available for children birth through age three. Check it out! :)
It's been my experience that many babies are nearly 5 months old before they can do those deep belly laughs. You know what I mean? Smiling and light giggling can happen before that. But the outrageous laughing from deep in the belly, that takes awhile for some children to have the ability. I guess it's a muscle thing. I doubt there is anything wrong with your little one.

i bet she's fine :) teeny babies sometimes look/sound funny when they are laughing. my son didn't really start laughing till several few months old, but he would go "HUH!" with a big old grin...it was the cutest thing. all babies are different...congrats!
She is fine, my daughter use to snort for the first 5 months she was born when she would laugh. I asked the doctor if that would go away and she told me it would be fine. she will grow out of that. My daughter is 21 month old now and she does not do that anymore. I would ask the doctor if there is something wong after at least six to seven months.
I haven't read any of the other responses so I may be duplicating it. Your child is probably teething as well, all the drool they accumulate just sits in their throat and when the laugh it causes coughing cause they choke on it a little.
