My son is going to be 7 months old next week and for the longest time now he has been throwing up pretty bad after he drinks some of his bottles. I started him on solids around 5 months and I took him to the doctor when he was almost 6 months and told the doctor that he was throwing up. He suggested I take him off solids and see if that helped. He was good for about 2 weeks and then he threw up again last Sat night really bad. He threw up bad yesterday morning and this morning. When he throws up it's alot, he can drink a 4 ounce bottle and when he throws up it's probably around the same amount. He doesn't throw up everytime he eats and he is keeping weight on, he is actually a big boy for 7 months (22 pounds) Do any of your babies throw up like this, any idea what could be going on?

So What Happened?

OK so I took my son to the doctor and the decided to put him on a hypoallergenic formula called nutramigen. It smells horrible and taste even worse. My son refused serveral times to eat it, even when he was extremely hungry and personally I don't blame him. We decided to try soy and needless to say we figured out that he is highly allergic to soy! He had a bad bad reaction to it and it was very scary! Now I have to figure out what to do?

Our son did this and it turned out to be food allergies. Our son was allergic to Milk, Soy, Fish, Peanuts and Eggs. He also had a runny nose all the time because of the food allergies. Once we got him off all the food he was allergic to his nose stopped running and he didn't throw up. He is now 9 years old and still has all the food allergies except the Soy.

Good Luck.

My son did this. I had to take a extra pair of clothes for me and him everywhere I went. Finally a dr. after going to 26. We found out that he had bad food allergies. It was overwhelming at first but once we got the hang of what he could and couldn't eat it was a night and day difference. He is now 8 and has outgrown most of his allergies. I would get him tested. Because when you catch it early they are more likeley to grow out most of the alleriges.
Good luck my heart goes out to you. I know how hard this is.

There are many things that could be going on. The first that comes to mind is allergies. You can also ask the Dr. if he will check the swallowing to see if that is the problem. Hope that things get better for both of you.

I feel your pain! My daughter threw up all the time as well. I was worrying myself sick until my Pedi put it into perspective for me. I told him she was drinking 4-6 oz and I was sure that, although she was gaining weight normally, she was throwing ALL of it up. He showed me a simple example: He poured 2 Tablespoons of water on the counter. I couldn't beleive how 2T seemed to be so much! After that, I calmed down a little, realizing that she was throwing up minimally and as long as she was thriving, she'd be okay. I had friends that told me to hang in there, as their children had thrown up until they were eight months old. I asked our Pedi about this and he said 8 months was the magic month for this to stop because there is something in the esophagus that matures and closes around this time (can't remember what it's called). So my advice...hang in there. You've only one month to go! But, I think you are wise to always get a Dr's opinion when you're concerned. You are doing great.

check with your Dr. first, you may try changing his formula because he may be lactose intolerant.

Hi R.,
Sounds like your little one is healthy and happy- I would suggest giving him less at each feeding and feeding him more often- I know that is trouble for you but see if that helps- his little tummy is only about the size of your little finger nail and can only hold so much at a time.- if he still continues to upchuck- I would have him checked for some obstruction that may be causing this to occur.
Good luck and blessings

Has your Dr said anything about acid reflux? They call it GERD. My 1st daughter would throw up what seemed like whole bottles but they say it is not as much as it looks! She was real fussy though because of the GERD! They put her on medicine & things got much better!

My son started throwing up when he started eating foods, too. After much research and doctors telling me it was reflux (it wasn't!!), I finally figured out that he was allergic to just about everything I was feeding him. I knew he wasn't ill b/c he acted normal in every other way. My son's allergies were so severe that I could feed him only goat's milk, applesauce, and carrot juice/carrots. I did NAET w/ him, and it was very successful. Google "NAET"--it sounded really weird to me at first, but we tried it and now he can eat anything without throwing up AND his eczema is GONE completely! If he tries a new food and throws up now, I know that he is allergic to that food.

My cousin did this exact thing but it has lasted his entire childhood. He is now almost 17 and was only just diagnosed with several food allergies including, milk, soy, several nuts and multiple other things. Food allergy issues are definitely on the rise. I would seek to make sure that your little one does not have these issues. If my cousin had been properly diagnosed as a young child his life would have been a lot easier and his esophagus would be in better shape. I hope your baby gets better quickly.

Wow, that is scary. Poor thing, and as a first time Mom, I can imagine the fear. I know a friend had a baby with this and was diagnosed with reflux. In attempt to keep her baby off meds at this age, she tried chiropractic, and it worked wonders! www.maximizedliving.com can help you find one near you. I use a great kids chiro in Copperfield if you want his number. Whatever you choose, I hope that it remedies this. Hang in there..and yes, he is a BIG boy!

This could be reflux. My daughter had reflux when she was born and she threw up almost everytime she ate. It was usually curtled and projectile, so it was definitely pretty bad. I know rather than getting on the really high medications we started her out by giving her a very small amount of Mylanta about a half hour before she ate and it really helped. She didn't throw up near as often and when she did it wasn't near as bad. You just use one of those really small baby medicine droppers and only fill it up about a quarter or half of the way. You don't want to give him too much because it's an adult medication, but a little won't hurt him. Hope this helps.

My daughter, who is now in her 30's starting doing this at 4 mo., she had been breastfeeding, so we tried her on canned milk and formula, both of which added diahrrea also. Eventually we changed to soy. She is still lactose intollerant. I realize this was a long time ago, but hopefully this info will be helpful. GW

Both of our children were very much like that, along with diarrhea at times. We switched them to a lactose-free formula and the problems cleared up. The doctor suggested trying whole milk when they turned one because they might have possibly outgrown it. They had not. They are both STILL lactose intolerant. We give them Lactaid or Dairy Ease lactose free milk.

I was thinking the overeating things also. Maybe try a schedule with him (which I usually oppose). Give him only certain amounts, at scheduled times. If he acts like he still wants more, wait a few minutes to see if he is still acting that way, or if it is out of habit. He is probably just gotten used to eating so much even though he is full already. Bad habit to start so young.

I breastfed, then we did milk based formula for about two months and all of a sudden mine started throwing up at six-seven months of age. We had to switch to soy based formula. You may ask the doctor if that is an option. Mine went to cows milk fine at 12 months but last month, due to some health issues, we had his allergies tested and he's allergic to milk and all milk products. Goodluck!

How much and how often does he eat? For him to weigh 22 pounds, I am wondering if he just really likes to eat, but his stomach doesn't need & can't handle as much as he's getting. I've known babies who spit-up A LOT at almost every sitting. These days, those babies are usually diagnosed with reflux or something. But for it to just be on occassion sounds like something different. And 22 pounds at 7 months sounds really big. And I'm not one to freak out about a big baby, but if he's occassionally throwing up everything he just ate, and he's that big, then that's my first thought. Maybe he's overeating.

I'm certainly no professional, but thought I'd pitch in my thoughts. And again, I have known moms whose babies spit-up handfuls after almost every feeding, and their babies were just fine. So hopefully this is nothing to worry too much about. Maybe someone here can give you some really good advice. Good luck!

Hi R.,

Ask the doctor to test for Pyloric Stenosis (sp?). It won't hurt, and it's basically just an ultrasound of the abdomen. Quick and easy. Both my son's were tested for this when they were little and were throwing up too. They didn't have it, but the doctor said that it could be either that, or a milk allergy. Anyway, just something to look into. Good luck and don't worry. I'm sure he'll be fine.

dont worry my baby did the same thing. It seems like everytime he drank a bottle he would throw all of it up but he continued to gain weight so the doctor said that i shouldnt be concerned, he had acid reflux and the medicine that we tried on made it worse but he eventually grew out of it. i know it can be nerve wrecking when they throw up all over you every time they eat but we just made sure each time someone held he they had a blanket to cover them or a burp cloth. He definately blessed everyone that held him...lol. Good Luck

Hi R.,

Just wondering if maybe your son is lactose intolerant. My niece used to do that, and we found out that she was lactose intolerant. The doctor changed her formula, and she was fine after that. Now that she is older, she drinks Silk, instead of regular milk.
Hope this helps. Take care, and I hope your son gets better.

Hi R.. Have you asked his pediatrician about reflux?

My 2 year old had really bad reflux until he was about 9 or 10 months. We tried switching formulas and that helped a little but he still spit up quite a bit, almost his entire feeding.

Hope you find out what it is that is making your little one spit up so bad.

I think Cari might be right. My first child would throw up occasionally and it always seemed to be after he had eaten more than usual or had finished a bottle too quickly. He was my first child so when he would get fussy I usually turned to food or a bottle to calm him. Now that I have two other children to compare it to, I know that I was probably overfeeding my first. Try keeping a food diary for him for a few weeks. Right down everything he eats/drinks and note when he throws up. If he's doing it after he has eaten a larger amount try cutting his portions. Maybe try feeding him smaller portions but more often during the day if he still seems hungry.

Good Luck,
K.

My son did that about the same age as yours. His doctor said that it was acid-reflex. We tried a million different formulas and nothing seemed to work. The doctor finally said for us to add cereal to his forumla. I think for every 2 oz you put a scoop of cereal. My son is 3 now so I can't really remember for sure. It doesn't have to be perfect just enought to make it thicker than the formula itself. Hope this helps.

Go back to the doc or find another one. Boys can sometimes have a problem with the mechanics of the stomach thus causing vomiting.

If you are concerned and your pedi isn't then it is time to find a new doctor.

This sounds like GERD, gastroesphogeal reflux disease. I remember the first time my son did it. Projectile breast milk across the room. For a few years, we found dried milk in all kinds of places. Our pedi weighed him every week, prescribed a couple of meds to help him digest a little faster and most importantly, we were taught to keep him upright for AT LEAST 15 minutes after he ate.

Because this sounds like it started later, I would also ask about a pediatric nutritionist or someone who can help you rule out allergies to what he is getting. He is on formula, right? That stuff has all kinds of things in it, depending upon what brand and kind it is. AND it sits in the stomach longer that breast milk, so if the sphincter between the stomach and esophagus spasms or can't contain the contents, there is more in the stomach to regurgitate. There are other things that this could be as well, so I would make sure that you are keeping records of time of day, before/after nap/sleeping, feeding position, type of bottle, etc.

I called the doc every time we had a GERD episode at the beginning and went down there because he was loosing weight. The meds helped immensely, and after a few months, it just went away on its own. Some babies muscles aren't as strong as others in this area, but they catch up. Keep asking questions, if you don't like what you are hearing, find another doctor. God Bless you! M.
