Baby Had No Nap, Can I Put Him down Early?

My 14 month old would not take his afternoon nap today (usually at 2--for an hour and a half or so). How early can I put him to bed tonight? He usually goes down at 7:30 or 8. I'm afraid if I put him down early, he'll wake up at 4. Is 6:30 too much earlier? Will he still sleep through the night?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for all the great advice! I did hold out until 7 (surprizingly, he wasn't cranky the whole time). He woke up a few times (he usually only wakes up once), but I think that was more his teeth than anything else. He fell asleep very quickly, he must have been exhausted. I hope his naps go better today!

For sure. Whenever my kids miss a nap, I put them down about an hour early and they always sleep in till their usual time and alot of times, they actually sleep longer. If he is overtired and you put him down at the same time, he might actually sleep less.

If you can stand it I would try to keep him up until at least 7pm. Otherwise, his system will be messed up and he'll skip the nap tomorrow. We all know how important naps are to the mom. You wouldn't want to mess with that. LOL.

Yeah, see if he'll hold out until 7. Hate when they skip their naps!

I would put him down when he shows signs of being tired and gets cranky or 7pm - whichever is first. I wouldn't push him to stay up if he's tired - he'll become overtired and not sleep well. Play it by ear and read his cues.

YES! I have a 3 yr old and a 14 month old. Kids need lots of sleep! If they skip their naps bedtime is 6! Mom gets relief and baby gets to sleep a nice long sleep cycle. Its perfectly fine, mine being doing that for the last year.

If this nis the first time he has not napped it may not hurt to put him down a little earlier. I would try fro 7 this time to see, unless he is really fussy by 6:30 I would go ahed and put him down. They typically do not wake up earlier, if so not too much earlier. However every baby is different and only trying is gonna tell you. I fear putting my daughter down early too but I have, that is why I only do half an hour to one hour earlier. Good luck
