Baby Grinding Teeth - Spanish Fork,UT

My 7 month old has recently started getting his top teeth. He has discovered that he can make a clicking sound by rubbing them across his bottom teeth, and seems to do it several times a minute. I am worried about him starting a bad habit of grinding his teeth. Any ideas on how I can get him to stop?

What can I do next?

That sound is so AWFUL!! My daughter did the same thing right after getting a few teeth in. It seemed to just be a new novelty for her, and she stopped after a few weeks, no damage done. I wouldn't worry unless it seems consistent for a long time, several weeks.

Let him outgrow it. It's a stage, and the novelty of teeth to make noise with will soon be replaced by a new skill. With my first two the stage went away shortly after I thought I was going to loose my mind since the noise drives me nuts. So far, Baby Girl hasn't done it that I've noticed. Congratulations!

So normal, both of mine did this and it drove me batty!
I just did distractions, like hand them a toy, give them something to chew on like a frozen wash cloth or snack.
It will pass, new cool noise they have learned! It isn't good for the teeth but I think this is very normal at that age especially.

My son did that too. I could never get him to stop because he didn't understand no and didn't understand why I wanted him to stop. He outgrew it though, he figures out something else that is cool to do and stops doing it when his teeth don't seem so new and different

Yeah, it drove me nuts when my son went through this stage; maybe it's a boy thing, my daughter never did it! Anyway, he stopped on his own after a little while, I can't remember for sure but he only did it for a week or two. I think the sound bothers us more than it actually hurts them to do it; unless it interferes with his eating or seems to hurt him, I would say just wait it out and he will probably stop on his own. Of course, if it becomes a real concern you are losing sleep over, check with your family doc or pediatrician; even if he/she tells you the same thing as moms on here, the reassurance can make all the difference in the world somtimes!

B. - As annoying as it is (I hate it too), your kiddo will stop in a few months. He can't really doo too much harm he is only getting used to the new additions to his mouth. Both my boys did it and they are just fine. Only lasted 2 or 3 months. If it goes beyond that I would consult with a dentist but really I would worry too much at this point.

Its totally a phase. I remember it driving my absolutly nuts (its one of those soudns that I just can't stand!). Your baby is just playing with and discovering the new teeth in his mouth. There is really nothing you can do to stop him from doing it. Eventually the novelty should wear off and he'll stop. My daughter did, but the phase did last a couple months.

All babies, well most babies grind their teeth when they first discover thay can. I wouldn't worry too much, unless it happens for months and months.

Don't worry... He's going to grind his teeth but according to my dentist (whom i asked about the same thing with my daughter) He says that they wont actually do any damage to the teeth so don't worry about it.
It's just a cool new sound and feeling to him and it wont hurt him I PROMISE!

Just ignore it. He's just figuring out what his new teeth are for. He will stop. But if you make a big deal out of it, sometimes they will do it more for the attention they get. That will go on until he's a teenager. Haha! But it's pretty normal. It's not going to hurt his teeth at this point.

my son did that very same thing.at first i reacted and told him to stop doing that. he was a little older than yours. i think 9 months-10 monthish. once i stopped giving him a reaction and the novelty of the new teeth wore off, he stopped on his own. he did chip his top tooth a little but now you can't even tell. he's 3 now. so just don't react and it'll get old.

Hi B. - the best way to get him to stop doing it is by ignoring it. If you bring attention to it at all, he will start doing it because it gets your attention. That's his job after all.

My little guy did it too - it's just a fun and new thing having teeth!
