Baby Girl Cries a Lot When Wet

My 2 week old baby girl always cries either right after she's peed, or as she's peeing (it's hard to tell b/t the two). 75% of the time when she starts crying & we feel her diaper, it is warm. I'm not sure if she just doesn't like being wet, or if it's painful for her to pee (maybe like a burning feeling, or maybe she's irritated down there). Dr. says it's probably just coincidence, but there definitely seems to be a correlation. Does anyone have any experience w/ this? She had her 2 week check-up Fri. and was fine "down there." I didn't bring this issue up w/ the dr. b/c I just realized the correlation the day after my appt. Is this just how girls are...they hate being wet? I have a son so this whole girl thing is new to me. If she's sleeping when she pees she doesn't cry or wake up...it's just when she's awake. Lately it's become almost like a hysterical type cry...I just don't know if she's really in pain or doesn't like being wet. Any thoughts? Thanks!

What can I do next?

My baby girl did the exact same thing! She would scream like she was dying everytime she peed and we would change her immediately. She probably did this for the first two months or so. The funny thing was when she pooped she didn't care at all.

Your daughter's a new little life, she's probably just trying to get used to her body. She's probably fine! If she's sleeping through peeing then I wouldn't think she's in any pain. And if her pee smells normal and if her vaginal area doesn't look irritated, then I wouldn't be worried. (I breastfed and her urine had no odor.) She doesn't have a diaper rash right? That would cause her some pain when peeing. If not, then sounds normal to me!

The fact that she seems to be ok peeing when she's asleep tells me that she is probably just very sensitive with the wetness. Because if it is truly pain, then I would think that she will be up to cry even if she was sleeping deeply. I know it's hard, but try to not worry too much. If you think that there is something seriously wrong, then you should really bring her in to your doctor.

My daughter was like that too...from new born on, now unfortuantely at two she could care less, which makes potty training a real joy LOL. I have heard this is not uncommon with little girls...mine was also a very light sleeper, startled easily, and got very overstimulated easily, she also ended up being colicky (sorry if I am scaring you, cause colick truely sucks). I would think if she's a mellow baby in general exccept for that, she just doesn't like it, if she is fussy in general, she may just be a high needs baby. In my own experience, because my oldest is a boy as well, that little girls just need a lot more soothing, and talking too, and are just a bit more emotional maintainence LOL wonder why. I hope this helps...but most of all, trust your gut, if something really seems wrong to you, just bring her into her doctor, and ask. Nothing wrong with being a concerned parent. :)

My daughter hated having a wet diaper. One minute she was fine and the next she was screaming. She is now 6 months old and it seems to not bother her like before. I always joked that she was practicing good hygiene at a young age.

my youngest was like that, she potty trained really early. Her cousin was also like that - it's just how some kids are. You could use some diaper cream to coat her diaper area and see if that helps.

more than likely she just finds it uncomfortable to be wet and is letting you know. and it's probably something she will get used to and not complain about after a little more time has passed. at least that's how it seemed to work with my kids -- at a few weeks, hated to be wet. at a few months -- eh, not as concerned. at age 18 months -- will deny they are wet till the ends of the earth, even as i'm stripping off a soaked diaper. unless she starts to show signs of irritation or have foul smelling, dark pee despite plenty of liquids (which might point to an infection), it is probably just a sensation she doesn't particularly like right now on against her bottom.
