Hi,
I am looking for advice on a baby gate. We need one for the bottom of our stair. The problem is the railing is iron and the wall doesn't start until the 3rd stair. We did buy a Safety First lift and lock and that didn't work because because it was abou 2 feeto off the stair and when you pushed down to lock it it would fall off the railing and wall. We need to find something to keep him off the stairs. Any adice would be great.
Thanks

Both of my sisters have done the wood strip attached to the post with zip ties and it worked great. We will be doing the same when its time. Paint the wood strip black to match your iron and use black ties and it won't be so noticeable. Good luck!

I suggest that you contact a firm that does babyproofing. They usually come for a free consultation and with your stairs they can probably give you good ideas and advice. You don't have to purchase anything from them if you want to do it on your own.

There are many of them and you can probably find a local one on the web.

I'm not sure if this idea will help you but we had a similar problem. Luckily we has one wall to work with but you may be able to do this on both sides of your staircase. I didn't want to put holes in my wooden banister, so we bought wood pieces and cut them to the same height as the banister. We attached the wood piece to our banister with plastic tie wraps and I cushioned the wood strip with pads that you would put under your kitchen chair legs to protect the banister. I then screwed the gate into the wood strip as if it were a wall. Not the most decorative piece in my house, but it worked well and kept my daughters safe. (Cheap too).

Evenflo makes a wide spaces gate that can be put around your stairs. Go to www.babygates.com and you can get ideas on the different options that are out there.

Hi Mary, we have a great gate that works well at bottom of stairs. I think it is Evenflo, I bought it at Toys R Us for about $35. The great thing is that is expandable to fit any openings and is mesh in between supports. You just twist the ends to make a tight fit, but the other way I used it was run it through the railings. Kids could only go up one stair before the gate was so it worked out well. Hope this helps.

Hi,

I found >Safety 1st Swing'N Lock Gate< that says it can be tension mounted and used on iron railings effectively. Though I have never tried it.

OneStepAhead has this one: the end is bent metal to go over an iron rail.I believe they ship out of vernon hills,or somewhere up in northern IL.

What about a few panels of a super gate at the very bottom of the stairs. Set it on the main floor, bend it around the base opening of the stairs, and along side of the railing, then secure to the railing with velcro straps. Beware though that less panels makes the gate wobbly. You'd just have to try it and see. TRU sells the gate, and a 2 panel extension. One step ahead has a "Configure Gate".

Good luck. Hope you find something soon. Don't forget to check ebay or craigslist, maybe you can find one local that you could pick up cheaper than new.

There is a kids sale in lake zurich coming up in two weeks I think, check on craigslist.

The last person had recommended a child safety company. I agree, they will come out to your house and offer you ideas. They also sell products and can install for you. I have used Protective Parents Childproofing out of Villa Park. They have a website if you want to see if they offer something you are looking for or you could e-mail your question. www.protectiveparentschildproofing.com

Good luck
