Need to start thinking about installing baby gate at top of stair. It will attach to one gypsum board wall on one side, and an iron railing on the other. I have hated every baby gate I have ever encountered. Any suggestions?
What we did was to get a plastic, curved gate for the top of the stairs (to allow the cats a "landing zone" on the other side. It's screwed into the wall on one side and affixed to the iron railing with heavy-duty zip ties on the other. It's served us well for 2.5 years now.
Every baby gate has pros and cons, but that works for us.
I am also researching brands, but I know from my friends' houses that I want a gate that swings both ways and doesn't ahve a track on the bottom (running along the floor) because I always trip on them at other people's houses.

I don't know the brand of the one that we use, but we actually bought it at pet supermarket to keep our dog downstairs before we were even pregnant with my 2 year old and it has worked great for us.
We have the same problem you do- we have a wrought iron (outdoor) railing on the inside of our house (dumbest thing ever but we didn't put it in) and pretty much no baby gate we've ever seen attaches to it! PS- make sure you don't get a "pressure mounted" gate- it will say right on the gate if it is suitable for stairs or not.

I just replaced the locking clip (only $1 plus s&h - only about $5 for 2 just because I wanted a spare!) last summer. When I thought I would need a whole new baby gate I found this one at walmart online, ordered it and when it came on the back of the instructions was an order form for replacement parts! Jumped online to their site and I had them within days! Our apartment has wide stairs and this works perfectly! It was easy to install and has held up over time! Definitely worth the money! My sister bought the same one with her daughter 3 years ago and it's worked out well for her too.
