Have you tried mylecon? It worked wonders for my babies when they were little.
My five month old son lately has had some bouts of constipation. He now hasn't pooped in over five days and seems to be having some discomfort. He was constipated last week for about four days and then had a big, loose, runny poop. Any suggestions on how to help things move along?? He is exclusively breast fed so I'm at a loss for what to do. Thanks in advance for all your great suggestions!!

wait. exclusively breast fed babies do not need water. And this "constipation" does happen from time to time. Our pedi actualy told us at our son's 4 month appt that breastfed babies well occasinally have bouts where they don't poop for 3, 5 even 7 days - and that's fine. Especially if, when they do, it's the usual runny consistancy.
A little tummy massage (clockwise) and leg pumping can help to get things moving. My son (6 months) occasionally goes through the same thing.
T., at 5 mos your little one should have be having a few ounces of water a day. This will help with the bouts of constipation. I think it's a max of 5 ounces at that age, but I would check with your doctor. In a situation where your son is very uncomfortable and it's been a long time since a bowel movement the treatment is normally 2 ounces of water mixed with one teaspoon of Karo syrup (the glucose stimulates the bowels) - good luck!
For almost a month, my 2 1/2 month old daughter had really bad constipation. One cycle she went for 9 days without going. The pediatrician said it was very normal especially for breast fed babies. He said not to worry and if she goes for a week without going to use infant glycerin suppositories. You have to find a pharmacy that will special order them.
I hope it clears up soon for you.
