I was wondering if while your babies are sleeping if they change position. Last night at around three am I put my 9.5 month old back in her crib after she had woken up. I put her on her back as usual then I woke up this morning around 6:30 to find that she was sleeping on her belly holding her blanket . I put her back on her back but I was worried that if she did it once if she would do it again and is it safe?

What can I do next?

If she can flip herself over, she's fine. My daughter was always doing it once we stopped swaddling her at 9 months. No big deal. My son is 2 weeks old and I keep finding him up on his side and wondering how he managed it. :)

Completely normal and nothing to be concerned about. Once my girls figured out how to roll over I would find them all over the place in the crib, never where I left them.

Um my four month old granddaughter flips onto belly as soon as you put her down. Why are you flipping her to her back. She obviously is very comfortable on her belly. You will make yourself crazy and keep interrupting her sleep. Then you have a cranky baby.

Once a baby can roll over on her own then she can sleep in whatever position she puts herself in. I do remember when I was pregnant with my first I had been going to prenatal class having the "back to sleep" mantra drilled into me. I was babysitting my friends 8 month old one evening and I was horrified when I kept finding he had rolled to his belly, so I kept rolling him over to his back (and waking him up in the process). What a long night that was. I learned the hard way!

At this age it is fine. As long as they are able to roll back and forth on their own. I would probably take the blanket out to avoid tangling in it if she is rolling all over. You can get one of those tiny snuggle blankets that have animal heads on them if she likes to snuggle with something, that will avoid any danger of getting caught up in a blanket. Or blanket sleepers to keep her warm if you keep it cold in the room.

She's really old to not be moving around a lot and sleeping how ever she wants.

It is safe for her to roll over but NOT to have a blanket. Please remove the blanket and anything else you have in the crib. If she seems cold, you can use a sleep sac.

The good news? Now that you can lay her on her stomach, she will move towards sleeping longer! Usually pretty much through the night. So do not freak out, if her sleeping schedule changes to longer or all the way through the night!

Hi Jen,

All these ladies are right. Once your little one can roll over, they will sleep the way they are most comfortable. The safety issue about sleeping on the tummy is not specifically tummy sleeping but about having their face imbedded in a chemical laden mattress or bleached sheets without being able to move. If you're using a non-chlorinated laundry detergent and the mattress is at least six months old ( which I assume it is since your baby is over nine months), then all should be fine.

Don't ever use bleach with a little one. It is not only dangerous to breath but it absorbs through the skin as well as through the clothes they are wearing or the sheets they are sleeping on.

Hope this helps!
M.

My baby could roll on her belly at about 3 months and my pediatrician said to roll her back on her back but not to wake her. I would try to roll her and she would be on her belly in a few minutes. Funny, now she is a back sleeper!

No blankets until after 1 year at the earliest!!

I stopped worrying about it once my kids could lift themselves on their arms. Although when mine were little the advice was to sleep them on their sides. And I have a family history of sids (my dad's sister died at 5 months).

As other's have said at 9.5 months she should be sitting up and rolling over really well. So not a worry.

Why are you questioning rolling over? At 9.5 months I would hope your baby is rolling over. Do you mean 9.5 weeks? No blankets in the crib!

As long as there are no items that are suffocation, strangulation risks, totally fine.

If she can roll over one way, she can roll back the other way. All is well.

As for the blanket...A good test is peek-a-boo while she's up. Drape a blanket over her head and see if she reaches up to pull it off. If she can, she can keep her lovie. Though if she's not even sitting up on her own yet, I would remove the blanket anyway.
