Baby Carrying - Moby/bjorn

We have a big little 7 month old...just under 20 lbs. I'm having such a difficult time using a carrier, which is almost a necessity if I want to do anything outside with our almost 2 year old. I feel like the bjorn sits right on my stomach which really hurts with 20lbs on it. Then, no matter what hold I use with the moby, it just doesn't seem to feel right or feel safe.

Does anyone have a larger baby and success with a carrier?

What can I do next?

Both the Boba and Ergo carriers are great for toddlers. I personally use a Beco Butterfly and carry my son on my back, and I LOVE it. I really recommend this website: http://www.frogmama.com/ because this Mama not only sells a bunch of different carriers, but she is great about answering questions, and she also includes in descriptions of the items which carriers are better for infants or for toddlers or for both. She has a fantastic return policy that allows you to try out a couple of carriers before settling on one (assuming you don't have a store locally that sells lots of different styles of Baby Carriers). I tried out the Ergo, the Baby Hawk Oh Snap and the Beco Butterfly after my son outgrew his Baby Bjorn (around 7 months as well). They're all similar styles but fit slightly differently. I decided on the Beco Butterfly because of the fit and the interior sling that makes it that much easier to back-carry. Good luck.

My 4 month old weighs 19 lbs...I have 2 older kids and, like you, prefer to sling the baby, leaving my two hands free.
I like my "HOTSLING" for side/hip carrying. The pocket he sits in is big enough that he is supported.
For front carrying, either facing out to explore, or inward to sleep I use a "Baby K'Tan" I really like it b/c its soft and sorta stretchy, and b/c it has a sash I can tie around us for extra support and safety. The sash makes for something quick and clean I can offer him if he wants something to chew or suck on.

If you google them both you can see demos.

My advice with the Moby (if you want to try) would be to tie it MUCH tighter than you think it should be. Once I learned this, I felt a lot more successful with it.

I used my Moby for about a year, then I bought a Calyx (www.mamabydesign.com) which is a buckle-type mei tai carrier. I was too busty to ever use it as a front carrier, but loved it as a backpack carrier. I used it regularly for more than a year...and now just occasionally as my three year old still fits, but I have less need for it. We mostly just use it to get through airports quickly.

I much prefer to use a woven wrap (didymos, girasol, natibaby..just to name a few) instead of a stretchy one like a moby. The stretchy are great for newborn snuggles but after that they just seem to not offer enough support. If you are looking for reviews of all the different carriers out there I would suggest visiting www.thebabywearer.com . It is an on-line baby wearing community. You can learn all about the different carriers and on the market as well as buy one on FSOT once you pick the one you'd like to try.

I have a ERGO Baby and love it. My 11 month old is well over 20 lbs and I carry him in front just fine. I can also carrier him on my back with this carrier. It is truly my lifesaver.

I have a Moby and a Bjorn, so I can't help with other kinds of carriers.

I have, however, used the Moby wrap in a "back" position. This worked well for me. This is the method that workes for me: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L1RifEflbjk

DS is 13 months and weighs 21 lbs. I can't say how it would work in the yard, but it worked very well for me at the airport (trucking his carseat, a rolling suitcase, and a carryon as well). I was able to use the restroom, eat, shop, and carry food without many problems. You may need help getting baby in if he's a wiggler though. DS does fine, but I know some people have concerns with the back carry.
