I have an Ergo-carrier & LOVE IT!! My son was just too heavy for the Bjorn & the wrap was just too much work to put on/take off. Hope that helps.
I am looking for more info on baby wraps/slings/carriers that actually work. I have heard really good things about the Sleepy Wrap. Has anyone tried this one or others? My baby is now a month old and 11 pounds. I tried carriers with my first born, but they hurt my back and he was never comfortable.
Thanks.

go to thebabywearer.com - it will have everything you could possibly want to know :)
my favorite for a newborn is a ring sling
I also love wraps and mei tai.
good luck!

I have never heard of the sleepy wrap before, but I don't have tons of experience with baby wearing. For me, the best sling I used with my infant was the peanut shell pouch sling. Then when she was 6-12mo the mai tai style worked well (and the peanut shell as a hip carrier for a while too). As lots of people have already mentioned the Ero is highly recommended--I don't have one but would like to try it out.
There's a babywearing class next monday near you.

You can try on several different types of wraps to see what would work best for you.
there is a local mama who makes the best carrier i own! you can see it at www.sunshinebabyslings.com
it is a mei tei but the straps are wide so it wears like a wrap. it also has a hood which is great for nursing (if you prefer discreet nursing) OR for when the baby falls asleep and to keep baby asleep.
the forums at www.thebabywearer.com also have great info.
Hi! When my daughter was born a friend gave me a baby sling. At the time, I looked at it and thought "what the Heck?" BUT!!! It turned out to be the BEST baby carrier that I ever had. I wish that I had one when my son was a baby. I used this sling for 2 1/2 years with my daughter. When we were out and she got too tired to walk...into the sling!! You can wear them in front and when they are older in back also. Look on ebay for "baby slings". they have many different kinds... Hostling Babyland, Poppy, Maya, and many generics. Most are reasonably priced. I had the front carrier for my son, and NEVER liked it. His head would flop from this side to that, or I would have to keep my hand on his head to keep it up right. With the sling, you don't have to do that. And they can grow into it! Meaning, you can start them in a lying position then eventually they can sit in it. I found it even managable for breastfeeding!!
make your own. mobywrap.com : )
I would stay away from a bjorn, infantino, and any other carrier like that as they can hurt his hips. Here is what I recommend:
-Gypsymomma wraps (these are awesome!! The stretchy ones are nice when they are really little, but they get too heavy for them fast. I recommend the bali) http://www.gypsymama.com/
- Babyhawk MT- these are soooo cute, easy to use and super comfortable http://www.babyhawk.com/
- I love my active mom carrier too http://www.activemomcarriers.com/ssc.php
- Ergo... http://www.ergobabycarrier.com/ (very guy friendly also ;))
Let me know if you have any questions! You can buy new and used baby carriers from the forums at www.thebabywearer.com. They also have great information about baby wearing. Good luck!
I also love the Ergo. Both of my babies were bigger, so I couldn't use the sling for very long. The back support on the Ergo is great and you can use it for a lot longer (through toddlerhood). Check out this website...

You can always check on craigslist or Ebay if you want to find one slightly used for less money.
There's a place called body, mind, and spirit in knob hill, at The Source, that has a $20 baby wearing class on the 21st of July (MONDAY) where you can test a bunch out. The baby ERGO looks like the best - heavy duty and also good for small babies but pricey...I can't figure out the infantinos or peanut shell...the snugli is ok. Good luck!
Get the Ergo!!! It's the best! You can wear it in front (they sell an infant insert) or back when baby gets bigger and it's so comfortable. I've worn it for hours on hikes, markets, shopping and through airports. You can also get a diaper bag attachment that is really handy for traveling.
They may sell them at Baby Bear here in town...I'm not sure, I received mine as a gift.
Ergo Baby Carrier http://www.ergobabycarrier.com/ works great for me - my daughter is long and 17 lbs. I recently used it for 3 weeks on vacation because I didn't take a stroller. You can nurse in it also. Definitely try on a bunch with your baby in them to get one that fits your body.
Go to www.thebabywearer.com for further information, reviews, ease of use, etc. It has all kinds of information about all kinds of slings.
I have 3 pouch slings from www.slinglings.com . They have great customer service. I loved these pouches when my daughter was newborn up to about 8-9 months of age because they were so easy to get her in and out. Now I can pretty much use them carrying her only in the hip-carry position (mostly because I'm big-busted and that's the only position comfortable for me now that she's bigger at 14 months of age).
I also have a TaylorMade ring sling, which has been the most versatile for me. I used it when she was a newborn and continue to use it to this day. It is easy to use, versatile, easy to tote around, and easy to get her in and out of.
I also have a Sleepy Wrap. I'm glad you've heard good things about this product already. I love mine. Hands-down love it. I don't use it all the time, but it's very handy in specific situations, such as walking/hiking long distances and airport travel (I put her in the Sleepy Wrap on my front side and my carryon backpack on my back). I like that the weight is evenly distributed across my back and shoulders, which makes it more comfortable to wear for a longer period of time.
I have fallen in love with the gypsy mama wraps. I have carried my daughter in this wrap for almost 10 hours straight and not had any problems with the weight on my shoulders or my back. The even greater thing is if you are breastfeeding you can do so while you are caring her in the wrap. Here is the web site www.gypsymama.com One thing though do not let it scare you with its complicated look it is actually very easy to use and has multiple was to use it! Let me know if you have any question regarding this I am more than happy to help!
I have a 14 lb 2 month old boy and I love the new Baby Bjorn with the lumbar support. I think it's called Baby Bjorn Active. I don't experience the strain on my lower back that I did with the Original model. I've heard good things about the Angel Wrap, but don't have one yet. Best wishes and Congrats! R., SAHM of 2. Happily married 7 years.
I recently bought a ring sling and love it. My son hates facing in toward me. I am able to quickly and easily put him in a cross-legged position, facing out and he loves it. I had back pain with the Baby Bjorn we had and haven't had any problems since using the sling. We traveled on the plane with it and didn't have to bring the car seat or stroller.
That being said - there are so many different kinds of carriers out there. I would recommend trying to find something where you can try different carriers to find the one that works the best for you!
The New Native baby sling, or the Ergo pack.
I really love my hotsling, and so do both my girls (1 year and almost 3) It holds up to 35 pounds. If you decide to get one of these, I know a site that has them discounted. I got mine for less than $30 even after shipping costs
I used the new native sling with my first born and he loved it. I have recently purchased a metro wrap for my second who is due any day and it seems to be very comfortable and distributes the weight evenly. I hope that helps.
I used the Mayan wrap and loved it. It helped my hold my baby and keep my hands available.
Try www.mammasmilk.com I have experimented with lots and their carriers are the most comfy yet.
I love my Beana Baby Beana Ring! It is really comfortable to wear and my little boy loves it! You can find them at www.beanababy.com.
I got the Sutemi wrap when my daughter was a bit older, and I still use it now that she's three. I LOVE it - it is the most comfortable and versatile carrier I've tried.
I found past 15 pounds not much was as comfy as advertised. I did like wrap carriers...no strap digging. Peppermint.com gives good comparision charts. find something that puts some weight on your waist...rather than just shoulders.
I loved the ergo with newborn insert. He would go to sleep for a couple hours inside it and it was comfortable on my back. It was nice to have him all snuggled into me too. It's a little expensive but worth it.
I have been using the boppy sling. My son likes it pretty well. he weighs 14 pounds and is pretty long but he loves it.
Hi,
I use the ERGO carrier. It's nice because it's soft and you can wear your baby on your back front or side. Drawback is the the front position you can only wear her facing you. It can last up to 4-5 years old and has an insert for newborns so you can use it right away. It packs down small too because it's all cloth. I like it a lot. Good luck, S.
I Love the wrap. I too had back issuses with the carriers then I tried the wrap and no more back pain. I occassionaly use the sling but prefer the Wrap it feels more secure. You can learn how to tie a wrap or even try out the various types of carriers at wildflowe diapers. (wildflowerdiapers.com for list of when they have baby wearing classes.)
My husband and I both love the Moby wrap. It takes a few practices to get the wrapping skills down, but then it is WONDERFUL!!
I love the peanut shell! I only wish I had the peanut shell for my son when he was younger, I got it at about 8 weeks. He would usually just fall asleep in there, it was handy around the house when he was fussy or when we wanted to get out of the house for a bit. He is now 9 months old and loves it still. I use the side hold and it gives you so much support holding a heavier baby or when you have other things to carry. We also have a Bjorn too, that my husband loves to use. Good luck!
