Hey moms!
I found out while pregnant that I've got a genetic disorder in which my body does not absorb all the b6 and b12 it needs. I have to take these vitamins every day. I did it faithfully while pregnant and breastfeeding, but I have a very hard time taking pills and have not taken them since I quit breastfeeding. My energy level is way low and it's hard to keep up with my daughter all day. I am starting my first teaching job in August and I know I will feel worse then. I will take the pill form if I can't come up with anything else. My dr. is looking into alternatives, but I was wondering if anyone knows if there is a liquid or chewable form of either of these? It can be a combination of the two, or just one or the other. Anything is better than not taking them at all!
TIA!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for your help! I'm sorry; I mis-spoke about my disorder. I have an mthfr mutation. It's not that my body does not absorb it, it's that I need more than what I get naturally to lower my homeocystine (sp?) levels. I found out about it while pregnant, and so far my obgyn is the only dr. who even knows what the crap it is so she is the one helping me out. I really don't know much about my disorder, only that it is for the most part only dangerous while pregnant or having a major surgery (I can develop blood clots). I was at my well-woman checkup and just decided to ask her about a liquid form. While I was pregnant she tried getting me to a specialist, but my insurance would not cover any of it. We paid so much just for the genetic tests. So she instead just called that dr. to make sure she was taking the right course of action. Thank you for being concerened :) Now that I have better insurance, I am hoping to see a specialist and make sure I'm still on the right path to managing it :)

I just read a great book on B12 deficiency - Could It Be B12?: An Epidemic of Misdiagnoses Sally M. Pacholok RN. You and your doctor might find this an interesting read. I got it through interlibrary loan but it is also on Amazon. That author suggests that despite the fact that science states that the sublingual is just as effective in some cases shots are more effective. According to her description it is a small needle and you can learn to do this at home. Also, if your body can not absorb B12 anything less than the megadoses of the sublingual will be ineffective.

Good luck

Trader Joes carries a B6/B12/Folic Acid sublingual. It's a tiny tablet that dissolves in your mouth. I took it all through my pregnancy and nursing - never took regular prenatals.
However, if you have serious B12 malabsorption, consider getting a shot every now and then. Prolonged B12 deficiency can cause nasty mental health issues.
Good luck.

Hi R.,

I have a disorder in which I do not absorb B12.

If your body does not absorb B6 or B12 taking it orally in any form will not help you because you do not absorb it. The supplement goes the same place that the food containing B6 and B12 goes. In other words, how the heck are you going to absorb the supplement if you have a genetic disorder that prevents you from absorbing it from other sources?

The only solution is B12 injections or nasal spray. You need to get the B12 right into your blood stream because you do not absorb it through your gut. Your doctor should give you a prescription and teach you how to give them to yourself once a month or every 3rd month depending on your personal needs.

Not only do I require B12 injections due to not being able to absorb it, but I am an RN and I have to say that I am appalled that your doctor would not know how to treat this common disorder.

Read about your disorder on the Mayo Clinic website.

Hope you have more energy soon!

Go to TriVita.com and check it out. They dissolve under your tongue, berry flavored. Or just type in TriVita in Google to read about it.

Yes, there are sublingual B-complex tabs and drops that you just hold under your tongue. Google for more. Here's a link for one:

You can either have an injection given to you (however often you may need it). I do this once a month (and usually people with that disorder does the same) or you should be able to get a script for it and they'll teach you how to do the injections yourself. It's amazing how different you feel when you have the right amount of B! Good luck!

Yes! I'm sorry I don't remember the brand I took, but they do exist. I found mine in a health food store. You might check all the stores in your area. If you don't mind ordering online, there are some at the Vitamin Shoppe:
