I have a co-worker (yes, you read that right) that will be celebrating her 90th birthday. I work for a family owned business, and she's the bookkeeper, and the owner's mother. She loves her job, but has decided to retire Dec 31st. We are having a retirement/bday party for her. Any suggestions for her present? I will take any stories and suggestions. The whole family is at a loss as to what to get her. So, if you have ever got something for your 90 year old grandma, aunt, friend, etc.. I would love to hear about it!!

So What Happened?

Thanks so much for the positive feedback. (Basically, I was asking what do you get a person who has everything.) I will get the bed table tray! That was an excellent suggestion. She does read at night, and her daughter assured me she doesn't have one of those.

At her age I assume she has all she needs
What would be nice are things like gift certificates for groceries, medication, tansporatation(gas card) or if she does not drive---coupon for rides to doctor, grocery store- day out together.-- Time is the best gift ever!
I like the bedside table idea that was really cool.

When my grandmother celebrated her 90th birthday (she's 93 now and still living life to the fullest!), my husband and I found and scanned as many old photographs of her from various times during her life and we put together a Shutterfly photo book called "The 90 Things We Love Most About Our Grammy". Along with the old photographs, we also included newer ones of her with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. We asked our family members to give us some of their favorite memories of her, and we put them all into the photo book. She absolutely loved it.

I am fortunate enough to have three grandmothers who are in their 80's. Gifts can be difficult. Especially since they are all so active, most still drive, blankets and slippers won't do. Some winners we have had in the past - personalized stationary. They all seemed to love this. They enjoy writing to relatives.

They also like the the bed tray we bought. One grandma does her bills on it, she likes that she can be comfy. Another uses it to rest her book while she reads. She says it can be difficult to hold a book upright for any length of time. And the other grandma uses her's for everything from eating to writing. This is the one we bought. http://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/product.asp?SKU=11734138

Weather stations. My granny says she loves to check the weather before she heads out...without cable she doesn't always know what to expect. My Mee Maw appreciates the large numbers for telling the time.

HTH!

I've given a When You Were Born book that's fascinating (includes information about popular culture, history, government, etc.). It was a huge hit! However, I just checked and the one I used doesn't go back that far. You might Google to see if anyone does one of these books for 1920. I suspect someone out there must have done one.

Well I can say a trinket is a big no no. What about a gift card to her favorite resturant. Or maybe a piture book of some place she has always wanted to visit. Maybe a gift certificate to her favorite hair salon.

Send out scrapbook pages and ask people to create a memory page for a scrap book.

I have posted on a similar question before, but our family did the story of my great-grandmother's life. We had family email questions, pictures and stories to my mother. We then interviewed my great-grandmother and added people's stories and pictures into the final book. We made copies for everyone.

In this case you could reach out to family, friends, clients, and other people she has known throughout her life and ask them to email or send you their favorite memory of her, along with a photo. The photo could be of them with her or just of them so she knows who they are! Put the letters, stories and photos into a scrapbook for her.

A mani/pedi! Especially at that age, the feet/nails are difficult to take care of.

I love the When you were born book idea, but if you cant find one, then you ca make something of that nature, you can get a copy of the newspaper cover page of her day of birth... you could make a little slideshow or photo album for her. How about a professional portrait sitting for her?

Get her nice bouquet of flowers and some fancy slippers and soft robe.

If you've got someone who can put together a CD for her, I think using pics, articles, etc. would be AWESOME. My niece just did this for my class reunion and we sold TONS of them. She's going to put one together for my mom and dad for Christmas this year, too.....lots of pics from past years, etc.

Something like this is TIMELESS and you will have captured SO much. I think you should add business things, too, since it's a family owned business.

If you are in the Indy area and need someone to do it, let me know. My niece graduated from IU w/ a degree in photography and journalism and is really good at what she does.

I immediately thought of a box of cards (handmade if you make them, I do all the time) and/or a event calendar which is basically a calendar (not exactly but...) a page for each month with the dates going down the side and space to write in who's bday/anniversary/etc on that date. That way there's a list of everyone's birthday, anniversary, etc. The page is decorated at the top and sometimes stamped down the page as well if you like.
Another suggestion is a photo album.
I'm not sure if that works as well for a co-worker.
consumables like favorite candy, etc are good. But I also think you should know something about her personally like her interests. Canning? Travelling? sewing? get her a cute apron or some vouchers or cameras or whatever that fits into her interests that she could use now that she has time. Basically, don't assume she's gonna be sitting in a rocking chair at the nursing home (which I don't assume since she's only now getting around to retiring!) and get her what she would enjoy, without thinking about her age and letting that limit you.

What does she like? Interests? Hobbies? Does she read? Just get her what she's into....I know she's 90 but why is this different than any other person? For the retirement...maybe a nice watch or chiming clock for her home?
