Hi All,
My 5 year old has been put on azithromycin for a stubborn cough. We live abroad in a hot sunny climate. we were told us to keep our son out of direct sunlight during the course of antibiotics as it may make him/his skin 'photo sensitive'. (he already has fair skin)....

anyone have any experience with this? Or hear of antibiotics making one's skin photosensitive?

Thanks for any insight.

I will do what I need to do of course!!!!

Best,

What can I do next?

My teenage son had a pretty serious photo sensitivity reaction to another antibiotic. It took several weeks to clear up too. They told him to use sunscreen, but I don't think that worked. I would keep him out of the sun until you can see how he's tolerating it, or wear hats and long pants and sleeves. Everyone is different--some people have no problems with it. My son was told not to take the antibiotic again that caused his problem. Good luck!

Yes. Some antibiotics do that. Use sunscreen, hats, or stay out of the sun.

YES this is common.
And all of this will be on the info sheet insert, for the medication.

Yes, very common with some antibiotics.

Be sure he uses a strong sunscreen while he is on that medication. He will be more susceptible to sunburn.

yep, it happens with a lot of drugs....not just antibiotics.

while sunscreen may help, it truly does make a difference to just avoid exposure.

Yes. The year my SS was prescribed such a medication before football season was....fun.

I would use a lot of sunscreen and hats and long sleeves.

Lots of meds can cause this--including some birth control pills. With one med I took, I would sun burn in a matter of minutes. It left dark spots on my face that took over a year to disappear. Use lots of sunscreen and keep covered as much as possible or stay out of the sun.

I've heard of it.
Being on some medications will cause you to sunburn more easily.
Use a stronger sunscreen and/or keep him out of the sun till he's finished the medicine.

pretty much all the synthetic antibiotics are like this!
(I've become *allergic* to Amox because of this - between outdoors and under fluorescent lights at work...)
