I have a sharp pain at the end of my breasts, feels like needles. is this normal? I am 36 weeks pregnant, could it be due to the start of lactation?

What can I do next?

It could be related to lactation quite easily. I would bring it up at your next doctor's appointment just in case it's any of the bad things that come with your milk (thrush, clogged ducts, mastitis).

sounds normal to me. try slight pressure on your nipple with the palm of your hand. If that doesn't work, a warm compress may. As always, ask ur dr/midwife/nurse.

Be sure to ask your Ob about it. I used warm wet compresses. Mine only did that with my middle child, and boy did my milk come in!!! I swear I could have nursed a litter with that pregnancy. Check your temp to make sure it's not elevated.

by the time i was 36 weeks with my first one i went thru something similar and one day woke up with half my shirt wet it wasnt the milk but the colustrum that comes in first that the babies need not saying thats what it is but a possibility and then with both of mine within 30 min to an hour before feeding time well i didnt nurse my second so i had to deal with being engourged but within 30 min to an hour before feeding with my first i would feel the same way and it was one of those things saying my milk was letting down because it was about time for her to eat

The 'let down' always felt to me like my nipples were put in a light socket, which sounds similar to what you're feeling. My milk didn't really ever come in for a week or so after the baby came, so hopefully yours will be ready sooner.

The sharp and the needles sounds like nerves. It could be that your breast are enlarging, alot of chemicals/hormones making alot of changes and the nerves are reacting.
I wouldn't worry about it but make sure you mention that to your OB.

B. I remember a tingling sensation before the milk flow began. Your milk does not usually come in until about 3 days after the baby is born and the suckling by the baby prior to it helps stimulate the "letting down" or the flow of your milk.

I know that just thinking about the baby made my breasts leak -flow-milk. Maybe this is what you are feeling, but because you are still pregnant you are feeling the tingling without the milk flow.

I can remember really wishing I had someone to ask about nursing. This is a wonderful resource.

Your brest is just getting larger. The glands are getting ready for the big event that's all. I had the same problem and the doctor told me to have a bra on 24-7 O and make sure there is NO wire in it so you can sleep with it. This will help support your breast as they are getting bigger. Oh and he also told me, "please do not pinch or pull on your nipples this may cause you to go into preterm labor. That is not a good thing trust me!" So don't do that either.
