Attatched Upper Lip Frenulum

I just noticed that my 17 month old has a attached upper lip frenulum. I can't believe it took me this long to notice. Besides the space in between her front teeth (always wondered why she had that) Is there any other problems that it causes? She has her 18 month ped appointment next month and was wondering if I need to have her seen before then for this?

What can I do next?

I and my older son had this. It is really just cosmetic. I didn't have the surgery until I was 28. My son was about 13. Definitely wait until she is a little older or it may cause her to be afraid of the dentist. It should be done by an oral surgeon, so get one who is good with children.

See the above post for related info. You could also get an evaluation by a pediatric dentist for additional input. Please note that my dtr's issue was a lingual attachment. I am not personally familiar with the upper lip attachment.

Our daughter was born with that too. My BIL is our dentist. It has to be clipped, but most of the time it's clipped when the child is older. The gap in the teeth is the biggest problem.

My DD has this. She's 4. She fell once and it cut itself slightly, but there's still enough there that they said she'll have to have it "fixed" and the dentist said they can use a laser now to do it. My DH had it too. Anyway, I see no reason to mess with it until she's older. It doesn't bother her and isn't causing any problems. Different doesn't always mean "wrong". Just my 2 cents!

My 15 month old has it too. Don't feel bad, we didn't notice until 12 mo. Our Dr. said that it will either fix itself, like the other poster said. Or they will fix it later, usually when their baby teeth fall out. We are waiting to see. DS also has a posterior tongue tie that we may get clipped later as well. (It can interfere with speech.) You may want to have a dentist look check for that also.

my son has this. both his dentist and his orthodontist have told us he will need to have a minor surgery to correct this. the orthodontist's daughter had to have it done also, and he said it didnt even faze her. its a very simple clipping from what i understand. they'll clip it sometime during the braces process (near the end or right after) so that it doesnt pull his teeth back out of alignment. my son is 14 now, and it's never bothered him. his teeth were really jacked up, but not due to the frenulum. i'd ask your dentist.

I am 30 years old and my dentist told me I need to get mine fixed. I had to ask him what it was because it obviously bothered me sooo much = P He told me that is does cause the gum to pull away from the tooth some and they is why the clip it.

No big deal, they are just gonna clip while they have me under for my gum graph (unrelated problem)
