Hello all, I have gestational diabetes, was diagnosed a little over 2 weeks ago. I just had my appt yesterday and I am having problems with ny breakfast meals. The rest of the day my sugars are around 85-110 but at breakfast they are up to 130-160. The only way I keep them down is by eating eggs, and lets face it, I can not make eggs every morning, I love cereal but am not finding a good option that is keeping my sugars down so am looking for suggestions and ideas. Low fat yogurt also makes it go pretty high and I have to stay completely away fom any and all fruit till after lunch. This morning i had a whole grain waffle w some peanut butter on it so we will how that turns out. I test in about 40 min from now. I will take any suggestions and it just need to be kinda easy and fast since I have so much to do and take care of in the morning, I really want to go back with better numbers in two weeks so I dont have to take the insulin pill. Thanks ladies you all rock!!!

What can I do next?

My dad is diabetic, and he eats a slice of ham, scrambled eggs, and whole grain toast every morning. He can eat other things, as long as he has some protein to go with it.

Have you tried boiling a pot full of eggs on the weekend, then you have them ready to eat whenever you need them and you don't have to take the time to cook every day. I do this and put a B on the boiled ones in my fridge so I remember which one is which! And you can warm them in the micro after peeling if you don't like them cold.

Oatmeal is easy to make, and takes awhile to metabolize. I ate it for years, literally. A small amount of oatmeal(I used a coffee scoop-2tbsp.), some raisins, a little cinnamon, some water, and 3 minutes in the microwave. I took it to work dry, and cooked it there. Everyone knew when I was cooking, you could smell the cinnamon! I used Equal to sweeten it, yummy. Also, try nonfat yogurt instead of lowfat. No added sugar. Also, mozarella cheese with half a bagel. I used to work with someone who watched her sugars, and this was her go-to breakfast. Good luck.

For breakfast I used to eat a slice of whole wheat toast with butter, half an apple, a tablespoon of peanut butter, and 4 animal crackers.
What helped me was printing sample menus, and, I made my family eat what I ate for dinner. I ate a lot of salads also. Green beans (the frozen kind) were a filling 'freebie' for snacking. I really suggest printing sample menus for ideas though. I was willing to do whatever to make sure I had a normal weight baby! Lol! We already eat healthy, and still do, so it was really hard to cut the carbs and fruit for me. I exercise, so I don't see carbs as a bad thing. Carbs are necessary for the brain and energy, so, that was my hardest thing. I changed to brown rice, and, like it better now. :) you will also find that many 'low fat' things like the yogurts are packed with sugars. You gotta read those labels, what may seem more healthy is really not your best option! Good luck!

I just also wanted to say that ALL I drank was water or tea with lemon juice.

I was going to say egg whites and whole grain wheat toast. I'm not diabetic but I was told I eat like one. I love that for breakfast. Protein, protein, protein- Peanutbutter is wonderful. I love Almond butter (all natural) on toast too. Cheese omlette with some favorite veges and ham. Or just some ham, pan fried with some veges and no egg. Whole grains and proteins are what you're going to want to stick to. High protein Oatmeal (non-instant). Instant has a lot of sugar. You can mix in some PB or Almond butter. I love me some Almond milk too... The regular isn't high in sugars at all.

Just a few suggestions. Hope that helps a little.

The only reason eggs don't jack with you is because of the protien. I don't know what else is out there that doesn't have a ton of carbs in it for breakfast besides eggs, cheese, low fat yogurt still has quite a bit of carbs in it, milk does too. Really pay attention to labels there are some low carb cereals but it will make your sugars rise. get creative with eggs (egg whites are a healthier alternative) turkey bacon, and i believe in the frozen food section in the healthy part they have some breakfasts that are mainly composed of protien and not the carbs.

I'm GD too...2 more weeks though!

My 2 breakfast options:
1. I scramble an egg in the microwave...1 egg, 1T diced ham, 1T shredded cheese & 1 slice of Sara Lee bread (there is a kind that has less carbs per slice than the others) with a bit of brummel and brown yogurt spread...tastes like butter.

2. 1 slice of that bread with about 1T of peanut butter on it

I have found some things that do not work for me in the morning (breakfast or AM snack). I can not have ANY milk products or fruit. They make my sugar sky rocket! I mean I can't even have oatmeal because I have to eat it with a splash of milk and it makes my blood sugar go WAY up!! I am so sick of eggs, but gag them down for the protein....or just eat peanut butter toast instead. Just think, it is not forever...

Hope this helps!!

When I had GD, the nutritionist had me eating oatmeal and adding some cinnamon and raisins or cinnamon and small pieces of apple. Another idea, saltine crackers with peanut butter.

Have you checked the amount of grams of sugar in the yogurt? Most yogurts are loaded with sugar. You may want to try a different type.

Just wanted to let you know that there is a supplement that has been clinically proven to help people with diabetes lower their blood sugar. Let me know if you would like more info! My dad is diabetic too, and he eats corn flakes with berries, etc, at breakfast. He also avoids certain fruits like bananas, pineapple, and grapefruit because those tend to raise his sugar levels. Also, he makes sure to have some cinnamon each day because that helps... Good luck to you!
