My hubby suffers from athlete's foot. He won't go to a doctor, so I need some home remedies. He has been changing socks often, using the sprays and lotrimin cream. I plan on investing in some bamboo socks, I heard they breathe better and can help. His plan is to try bleach water and to me that sounds like a terrible idea. Any ideas that really work?

Bleach is toxic. I've read that soaking in vinegar works.
Can you get him to use a lotion? If so, you could get some tea tree oil and put a few drops of that in the lotion to rub on his feet it's anti-fungal. I have made a body cream (from scratch) for my husband who would get this and use the tea tree oil in it and within two days there was change from bright red to normal color. Otherwise, I go with the peeing on the feet. My friend's husband was in the Army and that is what they told them to do and it does work something about the acid in the urine. Good luck to you both. i know it sounds gross..but have him pee on his feet in the shower..then he can wash it off...it really does work
If Lotrimin isn't working, use a different brand. They are different ingredients. Read the labels and find a different active ingredient.
The bleach will help. about 1/4 cup in a gallon. We also use Vinegar; one cup in one of the foot spas. Use a pumice stone to remove dead skin. Dry well and put on some antifungal powder before bed. In the morning Fresh socks and maybe some more powder in the sock. Oatmeal might also help soothe the itch and dry up the problem.
I think it's the amonia in the urine that does the trick. I don't think I'd want to soak in amonia. MAYBE use a Q-tip and put a little on the spots. I dunno about that tho.
Bleach is very toxic -- not good for humans or the environment. It would probably dry his skin to the point of cracking and then he would be susceptible to worse infections.
Athlete's foot is a fungus similar to a yeast infection. Over-the-counter medications used to treat vaginal yeast infections (like Monistat) will also cure athlete's foot.
While he is treating his feet, and once the infection is gone, keep the feet as dry as possible, don't wear the same pair of shoes two days in a row (so they have time to completely dry out), spray the insides of shoes with a disinfectant like Lysol, and keep the shower clean and disinfected.
Good luck.
He might try soaking his feet in regular listerine. I would definitely not use bleach.
