Hi,

My son was recently diagnosed with "high functioning aspergers". His therapist said that is why he struggles socially at school. She said she wished they had more room in the office because it would be good to teach a social skills to kids with aspergers in a group setting. I'm wondering if anyone knows if one of these already exists? My son is really struggling to make friends in school, he is a 3rd grader, and I can tell this is really making him sad.

Thanks,

Nickie

My cousin's son has aspergers, and he goes to an occupational therapy class with other kids like him, a few times a week. The school district provides this service as part of his IEP. You may want to ask specifically for an IEP to be set up for your son so he can have access to services like that. It has really helped my little cousin with making friends and understanding social cues.

My son's school worked on that in grade school.

My son received therapy like that through the Speech and Hearing Clinic at Purdue University in West Lafayette. I would see if there are any speech clinics near you and ask them about therapy for problems with pragmatics. The school also provided this, but it was limited. If possible, get a doctor's referal so it may be covered by your insurance.

I would check with the Austism Society of MI

The one here in MN has multiple groups that meet, and can point you to outside resources if they don't offer what you are looking for.
