Aspen Dental

It is open enrollment time for insurance at my work. We have two new dental plans, one is a PPO and the other is an HMO. I was leaning towards the HMO so I researched the dentists within the HMO network. They are all with Aspen Dental. I know that Aspen is a national dental management company, which made me a little nervous. My dad sent me a link to some complaints on Aspen Dental. Some of them sounded like people complaining because they wanted something to complain about and others sounded legit, but most of them kind of confirm my nervousness about a large company and issues getting shuffled and seeing a new dentist each time in the office, and so forth. I usually end up at the dentist for follow up work every time I go in for a cleaning. My kids just get cleanings. So basically, I am looking for opinions or experiences with Aspen Dental so I can make the decision on whether to go whit the HMO or the PPO plans. Thanks moms!

My gut feeling is to stay far away! We could go to them also, but I won't. I have heard some very negative things. I went to a new dental company in Kokomo that offered great deals on cleaning/x-rays. They, of course, had the most up-to-date equipment, so it wasn't long before they "detected" a small cavity. Problem was, the cost for the "treatment" they recommended was quite expensive. I didn't do anything at the time. At the next six month check-up, another dentist said I needed some other work done. I asked him about what the first dentist said, and he said that needed to be taken care of also. That would have cost me well over $1000. I got a second opinion from a friend of mine's dentist, who she recommended. They didn't find anything wrong with my teeth. That was five years ago. That's what you have to watch out for with these big corporations. They'll give you a deal, but suddenly you'll have all kinds of dental problems that need fixed. The original dentist office I went to closed. I wonder why?? I felt sick to my stomach after it all as I remembered a small child in the waiting room. What did they put that poor child through? I heard that one of the dentists moved to Aspen Dental. I'm quite content with my dentist. She's more expensive, but I know she's not going to do anything that doesn't need done.

I don't know if it will be the same in your area, but when we lived in CT I knew several people who were scared into getting expensive, unnecessary dental procedures. They told my husband his gums were receding and that he was likely going to have damage in his roots and needed a deep cleaning which was going to cost $1200. We went to another dentist and got a second opinion and they said his teeth were beautiful and nothing needed to be done. That was 4 years ago and his teeth are still looking great with no gum disease or rotting roots. So if it were me I'd stay away.

my husbaned had some work done by them and it was VERY EXPENSIVE!
Then he had to pay up front and the fillings fell out right away.
I would not recommend them.

All I know is that my friend had to go without braces for her daughter because she had lost hr job and the Aspen dentist wanted all the money up front. Also, when my husband was looking for and needing a dentist he checked out Aspen with the Better Business Bureau. They had a pretty lousy record with them. You can always check there online, as well as Planet Feedback and websites like that. Although I think that even huge companies can have good branches or bad ones within the same company, so maybe researching the specific dentists would help.

I took my kids and we had no problems. We have only been the one time but all went very smooth. We will be going back again, so I can say it was not a bad experience for us. As long as you have insurance, a copay should be all you are responsible for, but I understand that I don't know your insurance either. So I guess in short, they are great for us.
