After reading a post the other day about aspartame sweetened drinks I started really thinking about how many I drink and how I have been feeling. I'm tired a lot, and have been having some problems thinking clearly. I am wondering if there is a connection. I tried looking online for information, but I'm just not getting clear information. Has anyone quit using aspartame and felt better?

I drink sodas made with real sugar, not diet drinks and not sodas made with HFCS. And I drink them in moderation. No weight problems, and I feel fine.

I drank diet sodas when Nutrasweet first came out and found that it left a vile aftertaste in my mouth, and I craved sweets when I drank them.

My dad has aspartame poisoning. He suffered for years from unexplained seizures and now only has seizure activity when exposed to aspartame.
After cutting all aspartame out of his diet, he saw a dramatic change in his health and in his mood. The only time he eats a food with aspartame is when he is unaware that it is in a food or beverage.
We don't ingest anything with nutrasweet, aspartame, or Splenda. My kids and my husband all have type 1 diabetes and our endocrinologists don't recommend any sugar substitutes except stevia since fake sugars actually mess blood sugars up more than regular sugar. Go figure!

Anytime you stop using a chemical that your body does not make naturally - you will feel better!!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aspartame

this is from their website - of course they will slant it to make you feel safer in using it.... http://www.aspartame.org/aspartame_facts.html

however, I would stop drinking it..stick with water, tea, milk, juice.

I would also have my doctor check my iron levels to verify i'm not anemic.

good luck!

I think God makes good stuff. It is up to us to use it in moderation. Anyone who puts half a stick of butter an a baked potato deserves heart disease. Same said for anyone who has to have several CUPS of sugar in their tea or coffee. Please just try going off all artificial fillers, sugar substitutes, and fake fats and see if you feel better. I think you will wake up one day and go, OH MY STARS!!! I feel so good.

The FDA has chosen to ignore the dangers of aspartame. My daughter started getting severe migraine headache suddenly and the doctor said it could be because of hormones since she's getting to be a tween. She would get them several times a week and we were looking at possibly getting her on meds. I made the connection between the sugarless gum that she started chewing recently with the headaches. We removed the sugarless gum and the headaches disappeared. She only gets a migraine if she drinks fake sugar (recently she had a Slurpee that was Crystal Light which is made with aspartame and she had a severe headache).

Another friend suffered seizures, and once she quit the diet soda they went away.

You already know it can't be good for you so quit! I'm sure you'll feel a lot better in many ways! You also might look into detox, there are many kinds that could help.

I just got my Dr. Oz email newsletter. Another study has shown that drinking diet drinks lead to weight gain. Because they mess with your blood sugar, it would make sense that they could make you tired. Artificial sweeteners are also very acidic, making disease more likely to happen. They also lead to osteoporosis. So even if they weren't making you tired, they are a bad option.

DEFINITELY there is a connection !! This is 100% fact. I am really surprised you haven't been able to read about this. It's not only aspartame but splenda too.....Check out the articles I am listing for you:

http://aspartame.mercola.com/

http://search.mercola.com/search/Pages/results.aspx?k=asp...

I can't believe someone suggested going to the aspartame website to read up on this !! Like they are going to list the truth ! Ingesting Aspartame can lead to the following:

Multiple sclerosis (MS)
ALS
Memory loss
Hormonal problems
Hearing loss
Epilepsy
Alzheimer's disease
Parkinson's disease
Hypoglycemia
AIDS
Dementia
Brain lesions
Neuroendocrine disorders

I can guarantee you those things won't be mentioned on a site promoted to publicize and sell product.

A friend of mine had horrible trouble with her joints- She even had a surgery done to try and fix them. She happened upon an article that connected aspartame to joint pain so she quit the aspartame and all her pain went away. I say that you at least try giving it up for a couple weeks to see if there is a difference. IMO there is much more to this substance than our FDA has chosen to worry about.

I am super sensitive to Aspertame and other artificial sugars. They make me feel like I am having a panic attack: sweaty palms, feeling a bit "off" and hyper, increased heart rate and flushed/hive-like spots on my neck (without itching). I stay away from anything with Aspartame, Sucralose and also MonoSodium Glutamate which gives me the same effect.

I am old enough to remember when aspartame came out on the market. I had a few items that contained it, and started having severe headaches following the consumption of those foods. I finally put 2&2 together and figured out that I have an allergy to it. I have since discovered that there are lots of people who can't have this stuff. Fortunately, I don't drink a lot of soda, mostly water, so i can avoid it, but I am always on the lookout & read ingredient labels. There used to be the Aspartame "swirl" logo, but that copyright expired, so now I am a label reader.

Read this article and you won't consume it again: http://aspartame.mercola.com/

I also want to address how you say you are tired. It could be from low iron or b12 being low.

I know I have issues with both of these.

I traced one of my migrane triggers to Splenda. Can't use the stuff, but don't have a sensitivity to aspartame... go figure?

Even though aspartame can be problematic, consider whether there might be another reason that you feel tired and have brain fog. It's possible that an underlying disorder is causing these, which makes you to want more soft drinks for energy and alertness. After years of this sort of symptom, I was recently diagnosed with an adrenal disorder (very low adrenals). For years, I been using diet soda to be able to function.
