Are You Getting Your Infant a Flu Shot?

My son is 19 months and received his flu shot at his 18 month dr visit. From what I understand, the single dose shots do not contain mercury. He did not seem to have any adverse effects from it.

I'm not sure about whether we'll get H1N1 yet. I've read that every year the flu shot given contains a different flu strain, and that the H1N1 shot is basically just another strain. Not sure if that's just a PR ploy or not, though. It's hard to trust a lot the literature out there.

With respect to the other mom's response about not getting the H1N1 shot because she's pregnant, I've also seen articles about the high incidence of H1N1 in pregnant women in particular and that there is a higher rate of death in pregnant women because of it. Of course, there were probably other existing health issues to begin with that exacerbated the effects of H1N1.

Don't get me wrong, I'm definitely not pro-vaccine, and would never push anyone to get a shot they don't feel in their gut is necessary or safe. Just passing along some of what I've read.

Hi R. - My son is 15 months old and is going for the seasonal flu shot this coming Saturday. He got the flu shot last winter (after he was 6 months old) and didn't have any negative side effects. Since he's in day care he's exposed to a million germs and sick kids, so I believe he's better off getting the shot as a preventative measure. I haven't decided on the H1N1 flu shot. Going to discuss that with my doctor this weekend.

My sister has four children 13 1/2years to 4years. And each and every year since they were infants have gotten the regular flu shot. None of them have ever experienced any problems.

My daughter was 18 months last year and she got the flu shot. Got myself one too, because I CANNOT imagine having to take care of a toddler when I have the flu! We'll both be getting one again this year. Not the H1N1 though. Don't trust it yet. Especially since I'm pregnant, and they never did any tests on pregnant women for the H1N1.
