Mirafiex frames are designed to be as safe as possible for kids. Flexible plastic, no metal parts, etc. Whether or not they are necessary depends on you child. Some 4 year olds take really good care of their stuff and aren't extremely active. Some never stop moving, and mirafiex frames are great for them.

Pay special attention to the lenses, Lenses often cost more than the frames, so you'll want to get a scratch resistant coating on them.

I wouldn't let comments about trusting us more than the optometrist bother you. I'd wouldn't ignore a lens recommendation from an optometrist, But they have an incentive to sell more expensive frames. Don't be afraid to shop around. A lot of different places sell Miraflex frames. Shop around and find the best deal

So you don't trust the doctor's recommendation? If you don't trust the doctor, why are you going to them?

IF they weren't safe? They wouldn't sell them.

ETA - I just read Wild Woman's post. Well, what do you know! Amazon sells Miraflex frames, too! Is there anything they don't sell?

I think my post just turned into more of an "I Love Amazon" post. Amazon is my go to site for many, many things. I don't necessarily buy everything there, but I do often go there to learn more about products and read reviews. Their website is far superior to just about any store's website, so I can always find the information I need to help me decide.

Original Post - Are you concerned that your optometrist is just trying to sell you something expensive that isn't really going to make a difference?

Our eye doctor is pretty good. He's been good with the boys (and one of them is on the autism spectrum), but the staff doesn't quite have my full trust. They are always trying to sell me these lenses that are supposed to have less glare, and they show me a picture of how much better they are at night. It's not that they don't look better. I'm just not convinced it's worth an extra $200!

I would feel pretty confident that they are safe. But I do think whether or not they are worth it is a legitimate question. I'm sorry that I can't help you there. I like looking at reviews on Amazon and reading the negative ones. Sometimes they are just individuals upset about something, but sometimes they help me decide. I don't know that you'll find a review on Amazon, but you might be able to find one from an on-line site that sells glasses?

They are good frames for young kids.
They are a bit pricey but you can shop around to find a best price for them.
When you get a prescription for glasses - you don't HAVE to buy the glasses from the doctors office that prescribed them.
They have to give you the prescription and you can buy the glasses from anyplace.
Also - one pair might not be enough.
It's practical to get a spare pair in case a pair gets misplaced or broken.

Many people buy their glasses at Walmart - they can be reasonably priced.
There are a few places where you can buy glasses online - but for a young child who's growing rapidly I'd prefer getting them from someplace that can size the glasses better to my child s face.

ETA I noticed you changed it from "safe" to "durable". Interesting.

I think my son has Miraflex frames for soccer. He's almost 16. I'd have to look. They weren't cheap, but we have pretty good insurance, so not much was out of pocket. Is that your concern? Costs? Sorry - but I wouldn't skimp when it comes to my child's vision.

If you don't trust the doctor, find one you do trust.

Do you think the Optometrist is trying to hurt your child or what? Have you tried googling it to see what the reviews are? Here. Let me help you with that

In my opinion they are too expensive. Get the optometrist to write down the prescription and check out frames at the website zennioptical.com. If your child tried on frames at the optometrist and you both know the frame shape that he/she likes then pick that frame shape. Note also if your child likes metal frames or plastic. Also, look on the side of the frame your child tried and liked and write down the number...this is the frame size. Then you can make sure the frames you pick out at zenni are the right size/shape. They cost anywhere from $15-$25 on this website so you can get your child a couple pairs.

i know i'm brilliant, and am glad to see that you seek my opinion over that of a trained optometrist.
