Are Cooked Apples Binding?

Hi Everyone,
I know that apples are binding, but applesauce is not. If I lightly boil apples, are they binding? I have a 7 month old, who I would love to make this for, but don't want to have her end up constipated. Any insight would be appreciated!

What can I do next?

Hi P.,

I have been dealing with my son's constipation issues for quite some time, and from what the doctor has told me, applesauce actually is binding (especially the kind they have now with cinnamon). Of course, apples are binding (as well as bananas), but apple juice is okay to give - I usually mix it with some prune juice. Good luck!

if you would like her to experience your cooked apples, by all means offer them...and if you're concerned with binding, offer them with a side of pureed prunes, it is sure to 'offset' any potional issues. :) I'm sure she'll be fine...and it's helpful to the bowels to have a challenge now and then...keep them on their toes. ;) (little humor there)

seriously if there is a binding issue, pureed prunes will take care of it quickly. :)

I hope she loves your apples!

Per your request, you are looking for foods/fruits that do not cause constipation (are not binding). So, if you Google search "fruits that do not cause constipation"... or "do cooked apples cause constipation...." then things will turn up.

Good luck,
Susan

I've never heard of apples causing constipation before. They actually have a decent fiber content as far as fruit is concerned (berries are usually the highest in fiber). Maybe you're confused because of the whole BRATT (bread, rice, apples, tea and toast) diet when you have diarrhea? I think maybe apples are included because it has natural soluble fiber which can actually help make the stool more formed and the water in the fruit can actually help with the dehydration you can get with diarrhea??

Anything in moderation is ok. If you feed them to her all day you might have a problem. But she can have some here & there and be just fine.
