G.T.
Mines a Vizio and it's slow and lame too, and wont even play new blu ray disks, it's only a little over a year old. I'm glad it plays regular dvds too, they play without problem.
Last night we bought a Samsung Smart-Player, but it is EXTREMELY slow. At first I thought that the batteries in the remote were just bad, but the batteries are fresh, and even the touch buttons on the front of the player don't react right away. It also kept disconnecting from the wireless connection, although our computer wasn't having any connectivity issues.
Is this common with BluRay players, or did we buy a dud?
What brand Blu Ray player do you use/recommend?
If you are going to use the wireless network in your house to connect to the internet via a BR player, yes, you'd need the computer to be somewhat in the same vicinity (as long as where you are putting the player receives the wifi signal, you'd be ok.)
But no, you don't have to have a computer even in the home just to watch Blu Ray videos.
ETA: I returned the Blu-Ray player a few days ago, and while waiting in line, another couple came in, also with a Samsung player ( different model) and said they had the same bad experience. So, no more Samsung for me!

We have a Samsung. It was a door prize from my husbands office party.
We had it for about 6 months...and it crapped out. Thank god we had not bought any Blue rays!
I have not been impressed with any of the newer stuff that is out there in the electronic world.
Blue Ray being my biggest disappointment.
Yes, ours is really slow too. It's a Panasonic. I can't speak for the connection speed because ours isn't hooked up to anything.
Sometimes the latest technology is not the best :(
Kate:
Take it back. It doesn't sound right. It sounds like a lemon!
We don't own a Blu-Ray. We've contemplated one over the years but don't feel like spending the extra money on the DVDs...
Check with Consumer Reports.com - they did a great write-up on DVD players and Blu-Ray!
Okay my ? too - do we have to have a computer nearby to use a blu-ray?
Ours is a little slow too. The movies do take a little time to load and sometimes when I first turn it on it takes a minute to open to add the disc. I don't know about the wireless connection though. We only use our to watch movies and got it a few years ago.
We have a Sony and the only time I notice it being slow is turning it on and loading a Blu Ray Disc. Other than that it has not been too bad!
Ours is a Sony Blue Ray and we bought it when they were more expensive ($300, about 3 yrs. ago) and YES it's SLOW!!! (Kind of frustrating, I agree!)
we use the blu ray feature of the playstation 3 to watch them, no issues! :) but try swapping it out just incase.
We have an LG, and it isn't as slow as yours sounds BUT this particular model made a big deal about how FAST it is, so that makes me think Blu-rays can be very slow.
Ours takes time to turn on, and it can take a minute for the disc to load. When I first got it, it dropped the wifi a couple of times, but doesn't do that anymore.
I'd probably take it back since it's new and get another one. If it has the same issues, you'll know it wasn't just your player.
