Appetite Stimulant and Growth Hormones

I have twin daughters that are almost 16 months old. One of my daughters is considered SGA(Small for Gestational Age). She is just 16lbs 2 oz as of today. She has been small since birth 3 lbs 7 ozs. She has always grown at her own rate following her own curve and gaining the minimum allowed...whatever that means. We already do all the high calorie foods and milk and nothing seems to help her gain weight. She is also VERY active. She never sits still. Her nutrtionist recommended asking her Drs about Periactin as an appetite stimulant. Does anyone have any advice or first hand knowledge of using this drug? My daughter is also being tracked by an Endocronolist and she has mentioned Growth Hormones as a possibility to help with her SGA. Does anyone have any experience with Growth hormones at a young age? Thanks for any advice. Now that she is getting closer to 2 we have to start making decisions on what course of action to take with our daughter.

What can I do next?

I'm sorry, I guess I don't see what is wrong with her size.... Are you and your husband tall or bigboned people? Is that why they are worried about her being small??

As long as she's following her curve and hasn't hit a plateau then I personally wouldn't start her on any hormones.

My youngest son is 3 years old and only weighs 26 lbs. He was 7lbs lloz at birth and didn't gain any weight for the first month but did grow in length. He doesn't look unhealthy just a little small but the 3T clothes fit him in length just a little baggy on him so I have never worried about him being little. Our pediatrician was concerned with his slow weight gain as an infant but then she saw my husband who is over 6 ft tall and only weighs 160lbs dripping wet. LOL I guess my point is, maybe it's just her genetics. Maybe she's just going to be petite. Or grow at a different rate. Another thing.... I was in a size 2T when I started kindergarten and I finally grew, not much but I did...I'm 5'2" and although I know that's kind of short but nothing unusual.

I know you are just trying to figure out what's best for your daughter and I'm sure you will. Best of luck to you. :)

my grandson was put on this when he was small. They waited at first to see what his little body would do first, but then when he was a young teen they put him on it.
I will tell you it very expensive and not all insurance pays for it.. check them out before you do...
My daughter in law was a school teacher and she went round and round with inusrance. We are all glad that he was on it but
with him out of school now he is no longer on it due to money

Get a 2nd opinion before deciding to do this and check with them how long they feel that she can go without it before putting her on it....

Find out everything about it for if you do not you could be in for a big surprize but in the end it was worth it for him. He grew like he should and all worked out for him..
I hope it will work out for your precious daugher too.

My oldest was 19 lbs until she was 2. She had her own growth chart and is VERY tall and thin now. (trying to make you feel better). And my neighbor's little girl had similar issues, even did a test at 2.5 years to see if there was an issue, but she's now 4.5 and just petite.

It's your call with you and your physician, but time may take care of things on its own.

Best,
M.

I agree, let things work out on their own. If she's healthy and active, being small isnt exactly bad. In fact its pretty fashionable these days ;)

I'm sorry, I don't have any experience with SGA (my 4 mo old is 14.5 lbs!) but I think if I was in your shoes, I would let her body do it's thing. Are they saying she has a high metabolism (lukcy one! ha). I would be extremely weary of giving my baby growth hormones as her body is rapidly developing (internally as well). Some docs are too quick to push meds. Who knows, maybe in a few years she'll start growing like a weed! When we had my baby's checkup recently, the doc mentioned that as long as he was falling a curve, he was okay. That the numbers are just guides. Good luck!

My daughter had IGUR and was born very small like yours (3lbs and 1 oz) and she gains weight very slowly as well. At 3.5 she is just over 25lbs. We never talked about growth hormones, but as a mom of a SGA babe unless it is absolutely neccessarry for her developement I would never give the hormones. As long as your daughter is growing, eating and doing all the things a child her age does I wouldn't worry about it. When I asked my Pedi about her size, he told me that she just may stay petite and that was nothing to worry about. Have you had your daughter checked for problems in her pituitary, for hypopituitarism? If you haven't do that before you consider hormones. If your daughter has normal tests then she is just small and there is no reason to pump her full of hormones if there is nothing wrong with her. Most pedi's will tell you that as long as she is growing steadily it's nothing to worry about. Hope this helps some!
