hey ladies, i was just wondering if anyones child over the age of 2 has been diagnosed with having a heart murmur? the pediatrician told me most babies grow out of it by 1 (their little bodies have to adjust to pumping blood themselves, as oppose to the mom/placenta/umbilical cord doing all the work in utero)... my daughter is over 2 and they said that if it is still this prodominant when she turns 3 shes going to have to go to a cardiologist. im not all that worried about it... yet. i just want to hear if anyone has had a child with a heart murmur that is of no worry, or if its dangerous and complicated, whatever. just kind of preparing myself for the worst/best case senario!! thanks!! ~R.

What can I do next?

My daughter had the same thing and she saw a pediatric cardiologist when she turned 2, and he said everything was fine, some kids don't grow out of it until they are 6 or 7. As long as your little one isn't turning blue if she plays too hard and she doesn't get out of breath easily, it probably won't be a big deal. Good luck.

My four year old went in for an infection and the Dr detected a murmur, so she went for a cardiogram and it came back with no narrowing of the arteries and that basically she just has a murmur. Scary, but unless we have to worry, we won't. Now we have a baseline, though, so that's good. Good luck. BTW, I talked to several friends who still have it in their 30's and they played sports, etc all through life.

I had one when I was a baby and matter of fact I still have it. Don't quote me on this but I recall my doctor at one point saying 90% of people with heart murmurs go on to live normal lives. I am one of those people and the only noticeable affect is I need to have a doctor's note for dental work because I guess some people have to take antibiotics as a precaution for infection. Anywho, I suppose I speak for the best case scenario - hope everything works out okay.

My son was diagnosed with a heart murmur at 5 years old. However, his was one that would go away. We were sent to two cardiologists, because the record of the first one didn't make it into the file. The dentist wanted the all clear as well. There was no medication or anything. He said he could barely hear it and this was last fall! Here is the weird part! In my class at school, we had to listen to each other's heart beats and pulse etc. I was 7 months pregnant at the time. Somebody heard a heart murmur. I mentioned it at my next appointment and they heard it too, but said it was the pregnancy. I thought that was pretty interesting. Anyway, don't stress until they give a valid reason. If he wants to send your child to a cardiologist don't argue. Better safe than sorry, and it won't hurt! Good luck!

Hi my name is M. I have a daughter that just turned five one week ago she was diagnosed with a heart murmmur when she was a baby the doctors told me the same thing that she would grow out of it but she never did. when she was 4 the doctors decided that she should get an operation and get rid of the murmmur. It sounds scary and it is but everything happend so fast next day of the operation she was up walking, playing and eating. It has been one month seens the operation and she is out playing and swimming like if nothing happend. All you have to do is have faith in the lord and hope that it really will go away and if it doesnt just understand that god is always with us and everything will turn out just the way he wants it.

My little brother was diagnosed at 6, they kept missing it (this was in 1988). He never really outgrew it, but my parents took him to a pediatric cardiologist, who kept a tight watch on him and he is now 25 yrs old, graduate college, where he played on the golf team. He was also in the starting lineup for his varsity football team for 3 yrs in high school. As long as you keep a watch on it and get a good pediatric cardiologist, it won't be a problem. If it gets worse or anything, they'll catch it and you may have some ups and downs but hopefully not. The most important thing is to work well with the dr. and a pediatric cardiologist is the key, not one that also sees adults, you want someone who sees kids all day long and specializing in that. Good luck!!

Fear Not! I have a 4y.o. daughter who was diagnosed with a murmur when she was a few weeks old. The murmur is still there. My daughter has been to a cardiologist twice. Once to confirm what type of mumur it was and a 2nd time when the doctor was concerned that it was louder due to a prolonged illness. All was considered well at both visits and her murmur is considered "innocent". She will probally always have it, but the doctors said it is not the type that should prevent her from doing anything at anytime. She was in for a routine visit a few weeks ago and the doc. says she is still not concerened. Sounds as if your doctor thinks the same thing. Unless you see her turning blue around the mouth, running out of energy quickly, or sitting down suddenly to rest in the middle of doing something like walking I wouldn't be too concerned. But, if it is still nagging at you just let your physician know you would feel much more comfortable having her looked over by the cardiologist. Hope this helps.

I had a heart murmur when I was born. It remained past my 3rd birthday but I never had to take medication to go the dentist or have any special accomadations in gym or anything. ONe day I went to the doctor, told them about and it was gone. I wouldn't be worried, everything I have heard about them is manageable with no special accomadations or circumstances.

R.,

We just moved from Florida and our son was diagnosed with this at his 3 year check up. Our doctor there sent us to a pediatric cardiologist. The cardiologist said that the type our son has is the kind he will grow out of, usually by age 5.
