Hi ladies,

My daughter is starting kindergarten next year at Andrews Elementary in Plano. Ive been reading up on the Plano after school care program PASAR - has anyone used this? What did/do you think of it? What alternatives did you use for after school care?

Thank you for your help!

What can I do next?

I have my kindergartener in PASAR. At first it was a bit rough. The first week I almost (along with another parent) pulled my kid out. But once they figured out who the trouble makers were and what kind of routine was going to be put in place it went much better. His Plano school (thankfully) stuck to their word and kicked the kids who caused issues out.
My son loves it. In fact he gets upset if I pick him up early! Kinders at his school do not have homework. Instead they do a tutorial with one of the teachers for an hour. Lots of outside time and gym time so they can run off energy. I will tell you that they do not work the snack around food allergies. If your child cannot have what they are serving they will not substitute for another item they can have. Therefore you will need to bring them a snack daily. Incase the menu changes without notice. This has happened a few times but not alot.

I substitute teach and I have friends with kids in PASAR and they love it.

YES, you are going to have a few kids who are trouble makers but that is usually figured out fairly quickly and dealt with.

YES, kids are going to fall of monkey bars, gym sets, get hurt playing soccer, recess....things are going to happen. GRANTED.....if needs to be addressed when it happens.

Another positive part of PASAR is the one on one time with teachers. This can prove to be invaluable for parents as an extra resource for helping with homework and instruction.

Bottom line is that you have to do what is right for your family. I know there is usually a large waiting list, so it can't be that bad or so many kids and parents would not love it.

I have used PASAR in the past and it was not the best experience! My son fell off of the monkey bars and sprained his wrist... when he told them about it they just gave him an ice pack and sent him on his way. We ended up in the ER that night because it was so swollen! I suggest Primrose School of Forest Creek. I know they pick up at Andrews after school and several of the kids go there from Andrews! They offer a structured after school program and lots of HW help if needed. They also have an awesome summer camp! There number is ###-###-####. You should stop in and take a look!

I have been using PASAR this year for my twin kindergartners. They really love it and it's great for us. I like the fact that they don't have to be picked up by a daycare bus or anything like that. They stay right on the school property until I pick them up. They have teachers that help them with their homework (yes, kindergartners have homework!), they have arts & crafts and gym. We have had some problems because my children were July babies and are very young; there have been some behavioral issues that I think are quite normal for 5 yr olds that the PASAR staff have treated as if the children were 12 yr old delinquents - for ex my daughter had a cut on her knee that the staff ignored. She went to the bathroom and took her skorts and tights off to look at the cut - staying inside the bathroom, mind you, and was written up and threatened with suspension for "inappropriate behavior." But other than a few rough spots like that, the girls have really liked it and frankly I don't have any other options available. Can try to get a nanny to pick them up and keep them until 6 but college kids are quite unreliable and haven't found adults that want to spend just 3 hours a day or so. One word or warning; if you decide to do it, sign up as early as you can or you will be standing in line for hours in the hot sun. Good luck!

My son started Kindergarten this year and he went to PASAR for 1 day. But pleaded with me the next day not to be sent there. I work from home so I had the flexibility to pull him out and keep him at home. Two of my neighbors kids went to PASAR last year and they pulled them out after a few months. One of them stays at home with a babysitter and the other goes to a afterschool daycare at the Campbell Green Rec Center.
