I sure hope someone has and they respond to this, I was wondering the SAME thing!
I saw this and was wondering if it was any good? http://www.safehomeproducts.com/shp2/product/earcheck/che... My son never tugs at his ears or shows any special signs when he has an ear infection so it is hard for me to know when it is just a cold or when I need to take him to the doctor. I was wondering if this would help me or if it is just a big waste of money. Thanks for your opinions.
Well, we tried it. I suspected an infection in my son, but the Ear Check said "unlikely." My friend's son has a confirmed infection, but it said the same for him - so it looks like it doesn't work.

I have to disagree with Connie. It was so easy to diagnose an ear infection with my oldest son because his signs were obvious. But, it is much harder with my 10 month old. He doesn't get a fever, and he's a bit more fussy in general. So, the only sure fire sign is him screaming in the middle of the night. I prefer to catch it before we go one more night without sleep. I'd love for this to work, but my doctor told me that it requires a trained professional to see an ear infection. Now, I did not ask her about this detector. Please let us know if you get it.
Hi. I've never used nor have I even heard of one of these before. But, I will tell you as a mother of 5 children and a nursing student it's not that difficult to diagnose. Tugging is a good sign if they are infants, but not all do-and it could be in the beginning stages. Fever is number one sign. Crying, irritablity, swelling on side of face near ear, or very tender when you touch causing them to react are signs. Very often when a young child who isn't old enough to tell you thier ear hurts, has a cold with drainage, coughing, and fever(no.1 sign of infection), then chances are the ear has some fluid builinging and an antibiotic is prescribed. Antibiotics should not be taken unless thier is a actual infection, otherwise they are useless. If your child is very young, and you obviously have some reason to suspect, then a trip to the pediatrician would not hurt. If it's just congestion with clear mucous from the nose, and dry cough, then try a vaporizer in the house/room. My best friend just bought a Vicks (unsure exact model) from Baby's R' Us she swears has cured her 6 mo. old from his congestion/cold, as well as her husband, but she did pay around $140 for it. I always used the $20 one's from Walgreens or Wal-Mart, just to keep the air moist. You can even put the liquid vicks in the little compartment on some, or use the Vicks plug-in for the wall. You can try Tylenol cold liquid to relieve the discomfort, and supress the cough, but you may have to call the pedi.for dosage. My 2 year old has a cold right now/cough and I'm giving her 1 tsp. about 3 times a day right now(she weighs 24 lbs.)She doesn't have fever, or green mucous, so I don't see a need for the Dr. With a cold, it just takes time, and the only thing you really can do is just try to keep your child as comfortable as possible. If there is fever,or green mucous, that signals infection, and warrants a trip to the pedi. Good Luck.
Hi J.,
I never heard of such a thing. Wouldn't that be so great!
My one year old has had 3 ear infections and never showed any of the signs but for some fussiness with them.
Sorry no help here but I'm interested in seeing what replies you get.
