Hi J.! I have been using the Neilmed kit for about a year now and love it. I have severe allergies and it helps tremendously. My kids actually beg me to let them do it when they feel congested. The best way to use it is in the shower.
Has anyone tried those nasal rinse kits? I have the Neilmed kit (not the little pot). I'm a little leary about irrigating my nose! Spraying water up my nose just makes me a little nervous. What has your experience with this been, and does it really work?

I use it occasionally and I think it is great. The first couple of times it was a little strange squirting water up my nose but it really seemed to help. I get a lot of sinus infections so when I feel one coming on I start using it and it has been saving me from needing antibiotics. I just spary it up one side and it runs out the other side of my nose and washes everything out.
Good luck!

My doctor gave me a recipe for nasal irrigation because I had sinus infections at least 3 times every winter. I just use a baby syringe bulb, mix 2 heaping teaspoons of Kosher salt with 1 rounded teaspoon of baking soda in a quart size jar filled with water. While leaning over the sink, squirt the water gently into one nostril and let it flow out the other or out of your mouth. Repeat with the other nostril. I will not lie, it was not pleasant the first few times, but it works! The minute I feel a cold coming on I use this recipe and either my cold is less severe and/or I have never gotten another sinus infection. If it burns too much, just use a little less salt. Hope it works for you!
not only do i use it and find it incredibly helpful for seasonal allergies, but i have also convinced my five year old to use the pediatric size one, and it has given her incredible relief, too.
it is based on very ancient and widely used aryuvedic medical traditions i've seen in my travels to india, and is really gentle and effective, actually. MUCH better than serious allergy drugs, and boosts rather than negatively affecting the immune system.
i know it seems wierd, and we all three (hubby, daughter and i) laugh and tease each other about doing it but it seriously really helps.
good luck!

Yes, I used the nasal rinse kit over the weekend. It was GREAT! It's not as bad as it sounds. It just washes the sinuses out. I felt much better after I had done it although it did not seem that much came out.
My son used it before me - he's 8 and has had terriblel allergies. He was running a low fever and the dr. suggested trying the sinus wash before antibiotics. He felt better after the first use! He does it himself. He got lots of clear stuff out and some yellow/green mucus. We haven't had to use the antibiotic yet and it's been 2 weeks.
Follow the directions as far as the temperature and water to packet ratio. I think that is the key to it not stinging or burning.
Hope this helps. Good Luck.

Hi J.. I use it, it is great! I was nervous too, but it's not bad at all. A friend at work told me to try it a couple of years ago, and whenever I start feeling stuffed up or my allergies are acting up, I use it. I do not use it on a regular basis, although my friend does. She swears by it! We have told several of our co-workers and now they are all using it too. I would highly recommend it! Good luck.

I have used it several times when I have had sinus congestion. It really helped. It feels a little funny the first time you do it and it is a little gross, but it is worth it. Just remember to breath. The water goes up one side and out the other. Good Luck:)
Works very well. Weird at first but really makes a difference if you have allergies.
I have a ton of sinus problems, and my doctor gave me the Neilmed kit about 2 years ago. I didn't think it would work, so I gave it away. My cousin was singing it's praises, and my doctor brought it up again so I decided to try... It's GREAT!! a little wierd at first, but it really works well! I just bought a gallon of distilled water, so I wouldn't have to mess with boiling and cooling- so it's a snap! Just try it, at least a few times- you'll like it! Be sure to follow the directions, keep your head straight, and don't plug your other nostril- because it will go down your throat.
I use a neti-pot because I get sinus headaches quite often in the spring and it has worked great, it is a little weird at first but it really doesn't go up into your nose as much as it just cleans the passageway in between your nostrils.
Hi J.! I love my NeilMed kit! It's very gentle and provides such relief for allergies and colds. My only advice is to always use the packets they provide to prevent a burning sensation in your sinuses. The ph balance has to be right and every "recipe" that I have gotten from a Dr. has been too harsh for me. And NEVER use straight water! It will burn sooo bad.
Also, blow your nose very gently after each side. It will prevent the ear popping sensation that a previous poster mentioned.
Hi J.,
I have had to use the nasal rinse kits for almost 4 yrs. I had sinus surgery 4 yrs ago and had to use it right after the surgery to prevent infection. I have continued to use it to help with future sinus infections and poss having to have the surgery again. It takes some getting used to but it works really well. Remember to breathe through your mouth. Take your time and start a little at a time. Be prepared for water to come out of your nose spontaniously later in the day. It happens once in awhile when there is a blockage and the water gets trapped and then releases later. the best time to start is at night. Good luck

Hello J., I have used this for years. Due to cronic sinus infections, my ENT doc suggested it. Much better than all of the anitbiotics my family doc kept giving me. Salt is a natural antibiotic. This is why the old wives tales say to gargle with salt water. Or why fishermen pack their fish with salt on the ships. Pickling and salt curing hams to preserve the food is still used. Before anitbiotics were invented, docs used to pour salt into open sores to cure infections. Rememer the saying "Talk about puting salt on the wound"? This is a natural way to clean out the nose. Your own body uses salt water to do the same thing, you are just going to increase the amout of salt. Tears are very salty. Give it a try.
Well I have not use that product, but back about 20 yrs ago I bought this book at my local drug store.
SINUS SURVIVAL BY DR.ROBERT S. IVKER
on page 50 chapter about Sinus Disease he talks about making your own saline solution, with the spray clean out mucus, bacteria, and dust particles at the same time it will reduce swelling.
"Mix the saline solution for irrigation fresh each day in one cup of lukewarm tap water. Add 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon of table salt and tiny pinch of baking soda, thus amking the solution close to normal body fluid and pH. Irrigating with plain water is usually somewhat uncomfortable. Use 1/2 cup for each nostril, irrigating over the sink, with head in an upright postion. Always blow your nose very gently after irrigating."
METHOD 1 use all rubber or ear syring
METHOD 2 use solution in the palm of your hand
METHOD 3 angled nasal irrigator
METHOD 4 SMALL CHILDREN WITH EYE DROPPER ABOUT 10 TO 20 DROPS
I hope that this is helpful info since it has been done for many yrs.
My mom has been using this method and it has helped her allergy flare ups. Just by getting the pollen out of her nose and cut down on the suffering.
This kit really does work. The best place to use it is in the shower. The water should go through one nostril and come out of the other if you are using it properly and regularly. It may take a few days to get this to happen if you are just starting out. The kit suggests you use distilled water, but I never have - I figure if my water is good enough for me to drink, then it is good enough for my nose. One trick to avoid the weird feeling of it going into your nose is to get it the correct temperature. Too hot and it burns your nostrils, too cold and it makes you gag a little. When it is just right, it is completely soothing. I usually wait a few minutes after I am in the shower to start the rinse so that my nasal passages are already moistened with the humid, hot shower air. If you are sure to blow your nose half way through, then finish the rinse it really helps. Also remember to gently blow your nose when you are done to get rid of the excess water. Good luck and happy rinsing!
My husband uses it and says he can't feel a thing, he only gets a bad taste afterwards. He uses warm water and says that helps so he can't feel it. He had nasal polyps and it helped clear them up. He also gets really bad sinus infections and this also helped his sinuses clear up as well. They only down side is that as soon as he stopped doing it regularly his nose isn't clear. So once you start remember not to stop.
It definitely works! Plus, it is completely safe. There are no nasty side effects like drugs would have. It is just salt water! Good luck!
Hi J.,
Yes, both my husband and I have used the NeilMed nasal rinse. It came highly recommended to us by my DO and my father-in-law. I am scheduled for nasal polyp removal surgery on May 27th and it will be a daily routine for me after that.
I've only heard good things about nasal saline rinses.

I've never heard of Neilmed. I have a Neti pot. You can buy them online or at most health food stores. It's just a little pot with an extended spout. You just mix up a batch of warm salt water and pour it in each nostril. When you pour it in your left nostril, the water goes through your sinuses and flushes everything out through your right nostril and vice versa. Someone else here said she had ear issues with this. That's unfortunate because it really works! (It is a little weird the first time you do it, but you get used to it.) I've never had a problem at all. You may not actually see everything that is flushed out, but it's there. I always feel much better and I breathe so much easier. And...there's no gross taste to run down your throat. I had sinus surgery last week. The Neti pot is really helping to clean things out and is very soothing. I recommend it.
I tried one with the little genie like bottle called a Neti pot with it where you poor the saline up one side and down the other. For me I didn't like it. It felt weird and didn't seem to help at all. Plus it made my ears pop and felt as though it was pushing stuff into my ears. However that being said it can work for some people.
Hi J.!
Yes...they really work! I'm not familiar with the particular kit you are referring to, as I purchased mine while living in Germany. But, it isn't really 'spraying' water up your nose.. it is more like washing your nasal passages out with saline water. It doesn't hurt and it is pretty easy to get the hang of it.
I have CHRONIC sinus issues. And, when I use it regularly in the winter, I don't get colds! :-D It's a safe and healhty way to keep viruses at bay.
Hi J.. We use the Nasaline system, a giant syringe with a silicone tip. Our daughter who is 11 has used it for sinus infections, my husband for allergies, especially after he mows the lawn, myself for an occasional cold. We use it during flu season if we have been in a lot of public places, we are hardly ever sick. It can burn if your sinus's are irritated but that is normal and isn't a sign that you shouldn't be using it. I have many friends that also use this system and they all feel it has helped reduce their illness frequency or duration. Good luck.
My good friend used it and she was cleared up by the second day! And she was really bad when she used it. I actually had to take her the emergency care it was that bad, and that is when they told her about it. Hope it works for you!
Hi J.,
I used the Neilmed kit and I absolutely loved it. I have a hard time using the nasal sprays and saline solutions so I was very leary to try this. When I did, I was all cleaned out and could breath again.
Give it a try, I think you'll like it.
Good luck!
My 10 yr old son uses it. It was recommended by his asthma doctor to use twice a day as needed and I must say, he has had good results. We don't use it every day, just whenever he starts to get congested and he thinks its great. He says it feels a little weird, but the relief is worth it.
W.
Yes, I've used it and love it. It provides the sinus relief without the drugs. The only thing is that you should use it daily, unfortunately I am not that disciplined, therfore it's not as effective as it probably could have been. Also, you should use half the pack of solution for each nostril to begin, otherwise it burns.
