My mother in law is anti-meds. She lowered hers just by eating oatmeal every morning with blueberries and by cooking with olive oil. She thinks the biggest help was the olive oil
My mom has been diagnosed with high cholesterol. She has been taking a low dose medication which has been effective. She does not, however, want to be on meds for the rest of her life. She has already changed her diet and is exercising. Are the any natural remedies that have been effective...actually lowered the cholesterol numbers?
I am not interested in hearing about anything anyone is selling...sorry. Thanks for your help!
Thank you so much for all the responses! I passed them on to my mom. She had a dr appt yesterday and felt she had some info to discuss. Her dr told her she could take 2 fish oil pills a day (also mentioned Niacin)instead of the simvistatin. She was very happy! Mom would never have felt confident broaching alternative treatments without all the support from your responses. Thanks!

My Brother in Law was managing his high cholesterol with medication until he switched to a vegan diet. He lowered it 40 points and is no longer on the meds.
The vegan diet/lifestyle is not for everyone, but I am just throwing it out there. Me, I believe everything food-wise is ok in moderation.
Good luck,
L.
Yes, I have lowered mine about 100 points using supplements.
I'll be happy to give you all the details. You can email me at ____@____.com
Look forward to hearing from you.
Hi K.,
I have a background in nutritional counseling and have had amazing results with my health as well. Many people don't realize that cholesterol is only found in animal products. You can have incredible results with lowering your cholesterol and aiding in many other health concerns by cutting back on animal products. And that's not just meat, it also includes cheese, butter, eggs etc. A vegetarian/vegan diet is ideal but any part that you can cut back can do you well.
Good luck!

Garlic has been known to help reduce cholesterol in some people. It comes in pill form and you can find it in any grocery store.
Hi K. you will not believe this. My husband had high cholesterol and when he went back to the Doc she asked him what he had been doing because his cholestrole was nearly perfect. What he did was eat dry Cheerios every morning when he got up from bed. He didn't eat them wih anything else just several hands full of 'dry Cheerios'. Good luck to your ma and get her the cheerios. :-)
My mom's doctor told her to take extra Niacin (B-3) and it helped her cholesterol levels a lot. My husband just found out that his is high as well so I'm ordering him some too and hoping for the same results... in addition to him changing his diet and being more active. I swear he goes into hibernation every winter so each spring we deal with this. Silly boy doesn't realize he's getting older and his body doesn't work like it used to!
Hi K., my cholesterol is borderline high, so I looked up dietary changes for high cholesterol. The five things I kept seeing were Oatmeal and Oat Bran, Walnuts and Almonds, Plant Sterols, Fish, and Olive Oil. I have found orange juice and smoothies at the grocery store that are fortified with plant sterols, and they're really tasty.

I haven't been back to get my cholesterol checked since I started eating more of the things on the list, so I can't tell you for sure what kind of difference it makes.
:)
eating oatmeal does help
garlic. it reduces blood pressure, prevents blot clots, & lowers cholesterol. it has been tested against modern medicine & it's been proven that it works better. it is also a powerful antibiotic. I don't think you could find anything better.
Flaxseed oil (can find in capsules) Avacado, nuts, olive oil, etc. all contain GOOD fats that break down bad fats. In addition, even though you're not interested in what people are selling, you NEED to check into XOCAI. MXICorp is the website. It's a healthy high antioxidant chocolate with no waxes, preservatives or refined sugar.
DARK, UNPROCESSED chocolate is excellent. I've had clients get OFF high cholesterol meds as well as get off blood pressure meds as a result of eating this product.
Red rice yeast is another supplement that is utilized for lowering cholesterol. KEEP TRACK OF YOUR RATIOS. My cholesterol ranges from about 190-210 but my HDLs are normally between 127 & 135 - unusually high, so they aren't near as concerned about the total number.
Exercise is going to help alot, too. My sister went from 290 to 210 once she started exercising and changing her diet.

Good luck!
My mom had great success by adding oatmeal to her morning routine...she didn't enjoy it at first but now she loves it. She is also mindful of eating lots of veggies and eating less meat products.
Whole (plant based mostly) foods are going to be key in this. Whole grains such as oats, quinoa, etc.
A friend of mine also returned to the doctor with a 30% decrease in his cholesterol and the doctor asked him what he was doing. The only thing he can come up with is he's been adding 1 T of chia seeds to his cereal every morning. I love chia seeds for many reasons; it is definately worth looking into. It's a great source of plant based omega 3s, fiber, protein and other essential vitamins and nutrients.
Chia seeds can be found more and more at your local health food store. I buy mine at www.emeraldcitytea.com for quality and value.
If you want more info on chia seeds (I don't sell it or anything) let me know your email address and I'll send you an info sheet on it. You can also google chia seeds for plenty of info.

My cholesterol was 281 ... I lowered mine 100 points! I bought the South Beach Diet book - followed the lst two weeks faithfully, then after that just ate the food he recommended (chicken, fish, meat) and sometimes did his recipes. I focused on the glycemic index chart. I also exercised seriously! I did a circuit weight training twice a week and did cardio at LEAST 4 times a week. I started this the first of November and had my blood work again the first of March. Partially due to finances, I have never been faithful about vitamins :-(
Hope this is an encouragement.
My cholesterol is a little high. As I am wanting to have another child soon, I didn't want to be on medication. My doctor recommended that I take Centrum Cardio, a multi-vitamin with plant sterols, and 3000mg of fish oil. Whether it is helping to lower my cholesterol or not remains to be seen, as I need to wait and have another blood test done here in a month or so.
I have! I did it all through diet and a few supplements (which I do not sell - lol). I will not recommend any supplements, but I will send you a private message with my diet plan so your mom can consider trying it. It's the diet my doctor recommends to all of her patients of all ages. It makes a tremendous difference if you follow it. Try it for two weeks, and see if things don't improve. My bad cholesterol dropped to around 147, my blood pressure went from 135/80 to 100/60, and my blood sugar is totally in check now, and I had been diagnosed with a pre-diabetic condition. It only took a few weeks for these changes to take place. I'll never go back to my old eating habits. 1 & 1/2 years, and I feel better every day!
Last year mine was 218. My doctor wanted me to take something. I refused, and told him to give me a chance to get it down. He and I got it down 31 points. I ate nasty oat meal five or six days a week and exercised regular. It took almost eleven months for me. It may have taken less time but I did'nt give up much, except bacon, sausage, eggs every morning. I still have these foods but not every day.
I reduced my cholesterol from slighltly high to normal by taking fish oil and flax seed oil tablets. I would take one in the morning and one at night. Read up on it because I remember seeing that one of them also decreases your good levels and I don't remember which. My good has gone down slightly.
I noticed that you are writing about your mom. I am in the 55+ category with high cholesterol and I am on Lipitor. I went on Lipitor because my cholesterol was approaching 400.
Heart disease is rampart on my biological father's side of the family. No, I was not eating fried foods and going to McDonald's. I have averaged about two to none alcholic beverages a year in my life.
Here's what my female doctor found with a blood test -- high enzyme levels. I also had two ultrasounds of the liver which showed 1 complex cyst and two smaller cysts.
I am going for a cat scan of the liver in November. My doctor has not told me officially that I have polycystic liver disease.
Your mother and you should sit down with the doctor and ask for an ultrasound of the liver for cysts. I don't know what came first for me -- the cysts or the cholesterol. I knew I had a problem because of pinching under the right rib cage.
No, it was not the gall bladder.
Research this topic on the internet. Cysts in the liver are more common in women and they appear between 55-59. Genetics can play a role. I read also on one site that if you have cysts on the liver, you can have them on the kidneys.
I have made some changes with my diet. I buy the 'Smart Balance Buttery Spread' which has no hydrogenated oils and is on the Best Life Diet. Follow this diet plan. http://www.thebestlife.com/ I use olive oil for cooking and buy Kraft Salad Dressing which is made with olive oil.
I have cut out a lot of junk food and try not to drink pop.
Also, I saw on the Doctor's TV Show that the oils in French
Roast coffee can raise your cholesterol several notches.
According to the internet, however; it is not French Roast but 'French Press'. Check this article from Science Daily of 6-15-07. Title of article is "How Coffee Raises Cholesterol" No Joke!

Dr. Oz recommends using tumeric which is good for the liver. I sprinkle this on food. The health food stores carry it in capsules for those who don't like the taste of it on their food. Have your mother take some form of this. Here is the link:

Looks like it is in Oz's book, "You: Staying Young" -- get this book. Also, check out Dr. Weil's site and Dr. Wayne Woynarowski's site at http://www.drdavesbest.com.
As women we worry about breast and ovarian cancer plus heart disease. We don't worry about liver disease because we think that is just for boozers and drunks. Nothing could be further from the truth. It happened to me. My former neighbor died from liver cancer at 78 and she was not an alcoholic. I am convinced that this is one female disease that does not get discussed.
One male neighbor died from liver cancer in his thirties and another male neighbor now has liver cancer. We can never be too careful. I am glad you wrote and hopefully we can all learn from one and another. You have some good advice here. Have a wonderful and healthy day. Get agressive with your mom's doctor.
