As far as I know you aren't supposed to give the kids any of the cold medicines...we just use saline drops in the nose, wipe clean and a humidifier.
My little guy Really hates his nose being runny, he hates having his nose wiped, he hates the feeling of it on his face. I am not sure if it is a side effect of teething ( he just cut a tooth this past weekend) but we have all had colds recently as well. I have talked to the pharmacist and she reccomended 1/2 a tsp of loratadine daily ( its like generic claritin) that seems to be doing absolutely nothing. There are no other symptoms so I am pretty sure it is teething or just seasonal allergies. I would love to hear from some moms who have used something OTC that has worked for their little ones...Thanks in advance!

Thanks for all the great responses, I have some things to try now and I hope there is an end in sight to the runny nose.
I guess I should not be surprised both myself and my daughter suffer from seasonal allergies, I just hate seeing him so bothered by somthing as silly as a runny nose. For all the mamas out there that cautioned about the meds taken off the market...they were taken off the market because of parents who "abused" the meds, overdosing the little ones, when used as intended I think they are perfectly safe. My little guy is super healthy, has never once been on an antibiotic, I don't think a month straight of living with a runny nose is something he should have to "deal" with at his age if it can be prevented. Thanks again = )

My dr. will not recomend anything. I am suprised that a pharmacist recomended anything. There are so many meds. just in the past two years that have been taken off the market because of kids dieing. As much as he might not like the feel of it, it is best to let it run. My son who is two will use his hand or what ever to wipe his face when his nose runs. This is natural for all toddlers to do. We as adults even do it. I would just leave a box of tissues where he can reach them and he will soon be wiping his nose with those. Just pay a little extra for the soft ones.
take him to the dr before this runny nose causes an ear infection or gunky eyes. A little bit of dr-prescribed med now will help prevent a world of pain later!
We use children's benadryl and he also has a prescription for Zyrtec. They both work.
I have an almost two year old and have used little noses nasal spray. She doesn't mind the spray (she actually giggles at it) and it seems to do the trick.
Claritan did nothing for my son either, the only thing that works for him is 1/2t Benedryl. Good luck!
We have the best luck with Benedryl and Tylenol Cough & Runny Nose, but both of these make my daughter tired.
I highly recommend the Hyland's brand homeopathic Sniffles and Sneezes supplement. They also have a really great flu variety. It's herbal and can be given to a little one (antihistamines are a NO-NO under the age of 3, some age 6).
I wasn't a fan of the Clartin, form what I understand you need to take it for awhile before seeing results.
We had better luck with Zytrec.
Things to help with seasonal allergies. Wipe his face and hands down after being outside. Saline nose drops will help flush out their nose. Even at bath time letting him get his face good and wet, of course use caution. Will help flush his eyes, eyelashes of pollen.
Well my daughter is 13 months and she was having a runny nose during the day and getting stuffed up at night so I talked to her doctor since that was all the symptoms she was having. she said it probably was seasonal allergies since we both have them only at different times of the year. she recommended 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon of children's benadryle before bed or every 6 hours as needed. I gave it to her for about two days and haven't had any trouble since.
If his nose is running, you should let it. Stop it up artificially and you are not only inviting unnecessary drugs into him but (if you got the desired effect) backing up a natural system which, in turn, sets up infections / blockages etc...Not sure if you are one who vaccinates for the flu but here's a little fun fact: last year there were 86 flu associated deaths (which was us 86% from the previous year); however, last years death toll caused by OTC cough and cold meds was over 500. Data worth thinking about. Sniffles won't last forever!
i would say if the claratin sisnt work, tyr generic zyrtec or dimatap, it is cold and allergy medicine. and it tastes good enough that i sont have a problem getting my kids to take it.
There is no otc for runny nose for children under six. Only decongestant, which our doctors dont advise that either. Elevate them when they sleep and humidifier in their room.
