I have heard good things about this (but never had to use it myself....knock on wood!).

Hi. It turns out that my 2 1/2 year old has lice. I guess it is going around quite a bit here is the western suburbs, so I would suggest checking your kids! I don't really want to use the chemical stuff (Rid, etc), but I am having a hard time finding something natural that works? Any suggestions?

Never had a lice problem but my neighbor with 4 daughters says the key is combing out the nits every day.
I've heard that vinegar works. Also, anything that will suffocate them will also do. There's a place in the city (not sure if they're in the burbs too) called Hair Fairies (I think) that guarantee their work.
Hi M.-any decent health food store will carry a natural alternative or a whole foods (I can not remember the exact name)and my herbology books say the same things others have mentioned-but with the olive oil mix it with essentials of lavender oil and then rinse with vinegar. I had to use it last year and it worked great.

One thing to try to putting olive oil in the hair and letting it sit for five-10minutes--you can put a shower 'cap' over if it's easier, let the kids play in the tub, and then wash out with your soap. Also while the olive oil is in the hair, it's a good time to go through with the nit comb. But as the other person said, be thorough over several days/weeks with the nit comb.
I hope this helps - my two daughters had it last year and the medicated stuff didn't seem to work, but the Cetaphil treatment did. Go to www.nuvoforheadlice.com to receive instructions. The basic concept is to drench the scalp/hair in Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser and then comb it out and blow dry it completely. Keep it on for at least 8 hours (you won't even really notice the difference in the hair when it's on) and then do it again once a week for the next two weeks (3 times total). It suffocates the lice and then gets the next crop of lice from the eggs before they are able to lay their own eggs the next week. The 3rd time is a "just in case." Go to the website though for the complete instructions. Good luck!
You can apply Mayonaise at bedtime to dry hair, massage into scalp well and wrap tightly with a plastic bag... In the morning use a Very Fine Teeth comb, the kind that comes with the Rid kit Seperate hair in sections and comb out from the roots out, that usually works...
I know some parents at my children's school have tried mayonaise. They cover their kid's hair in lots of mayo and then cover their heads with a showercap and just let them sit like that all day. Supposedly this process suffocates the lice, and the oil makes it easy to get the nits out of your child's hair. It takes a few washings to get all of the mayo out .... Also, after your child is lice free, a great preventative is using any shampoo with Tea Tree oil. You can buy such shampoos at any healthfood store, or you can just buy the oil and pour a few drops into shampoo you already have. The smell is a bit strong, but you get used to it.
Good Luck!!!!
