Sorry but I'm an "oldies-but-goodys" fan of any Dr. Seuss (Go, Dog, Go...Put me in the zoo....Are you my mother?....etc..) and Berenstain Bears books (we had at least 20+ books. They would start w/ the basic books and by age 3, the story books had cute little stories / morals) Also, a Disney story book series, we bought at Sam's club...was a series of 3 thicker, books w/ condensed Disney stories and good illustrations. Enjoy!

Ones that don't rip. ;)

The card-board books are great. Our son LOVED Good Night Moon and we would have to read it to him over and over again. Same with One Fish, Two Fish.

The Bright Baby Books are still a hit with my 3 y/o and he loves to "read" them as fast as possible and say what each object is. They make a bunch of books that have large writing and basic pictures. Here's a link:

My daughter loves the "Very Hungry Caterpillar" and any book that has flaps to peek under or "touch and feel" books. She is 17 months. I personally buy any book that looks like a deal-- can never have too many, right? I find a lot of great kids books on the sale rack at the public library. As for educational, at this stage your child will learn all she needs to know by engaging in conversations on your lap as you both share a book!

my daughter has always loved the Sandra Boyton books, you can get them separate or in a little box set.

Dr Suess - One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish, and Fox in Socks, and the Foot Book are our faves.
I like the food books too - can't remember the author - Amy somone? My First Book of Sushi, Hola Jalapeno, etc. they're really fun.
That's Not My Puppy/Kitty/Dinosaur are all good
Any books with good pictures of animals, trucks, trains, etc are good - I like the Priddy Books brand - great pictures.
Pat the Bunny is a classic for a reason.

Also, I love LOVE "Flamingos on the Roof" by Calef Brown - it's poems and pictures. Very fun. Everyone needs this.

Don't get too caught up in a book being "educational" at this age. EVERYTHING is educational at this age (except for possibly sitting in front of the TV). Kids love rhymes, rhythm, animals, things they see around their world, etc.

Ever since my daughter was about one we subscribed to Brighter Visions. Every month they send you a story book, a book of activities and some pen or little toy or activity. It's about $18 a month but she's now 3 and we have a ton of books. That age is hard to keep still with a book but they do tend to send age appropriate books from about one year on. You can visit their site at http://www.brightervision.com/

my experience with my kids is that they cant sit still long enough to be read even a short 5 page story :) but i think ANYTHING you are reading to them is beneficial. I read a few times a day to my 17 mo. old, with no expectation that i will finish the story :)

i also like to watch the einstein videos with him and when they throw a word up on the screen like 'barn' - i say it with the video. the videos capture his attention better than books... he wants to tear the pages at this age.

so..... i cant recommend a particular series, but just expose to lots of different ones... if he doesnt get into them right now, he will later. i love "The golden books" ones because i had them when i was a kid :)
