Anyone Know Anything About Restless Leg Syndrome in Infants

Recently, I had to take my 10 1/2 month old son for a sleep test. The doctor's thought he had sleep apnea. He doesn't have that, but he has to have his adenoids taken out, tubes put in his ears, and apparently has RLS. During the sleep test, his legs moved 26 times in an hour. That explained why he hasn't been sleeping well. I sas just wondering if their where any other moms with kids that have RLS out, and how do you deal with it? Is there medication you have to give or what? I'm clueless, and there isn't much info on RLS in Infants.

What can I do next?

as the mom of 2 that started out as horrible sleepers I am curious as to what made them do the sleep study?

As for RLS there is medication but not sure on the safety for infants so not sure what they will do for baby. I now have RLS but it is temporary due to pregnancy and the poor baby, it is so horrible and makes sleeping so bad. I did try tylenol once on dhs encouragement and surprisngly it helped, I didnt think it would. But after some online research and talking to my midwife I tried several things. The midwife suggested added calcium and vitamin d (for calcium absorption) so said to take a caltrate before bed and if that didnt help to take a caltrate and a glass of gatorade (not sure why but maybe the potassium?). The caltrate didnt help but the gatorade did. But after that didnt help enough I did online research and low iron can cause RLS and low and behold at my next appt I asked for a cbc and my iron was low so in addition to my prenatal vitamin I now take floradix (a natural iron supplement, being natural it doesnt have negative GI side effects and is absorbed better). Potassium helps with leg cramps so I have upped my potassium too. Orange juice is high in potassium and adds in iron absorption. So what I do is take my floradix (it is a liquid) in a glass of OJ in the am and I was taking my prenatals with a glass of water and a banana (high in potassium) in the evening before bed. This helped until recently so I recentlys witched to OJ before bed too (OJ is higher in potassium than banana). The other thing they say that can help is magnessium.

Obviously none of these treatments could help an infant as an infant cant have OJ and I wouldnt give an infant any supplements without doctors authorization. But maybe this will give you an idea of what to expect. Maybe the doctor will do a cbc to check iron levels. Then maybe he will suggest supplements or give a prescription. Does the baby like bananas? In the meantime maybe you could always make sure the baby is eating some banana

I love the idea about the bar of soap, I have never heard of it, but I am all for natural/home remedies versus giving medication, especially on a child as young as yours. My mother-in-law was experiencing some RLS, and got some relief as a "side effect" of getting regular chiropractic adjustments. I know it may sound crazy, but children as young as your son do get benefits from chiropractic! I take my son pretty regularly. I am a massage therapist and have a few chiropractors that I really trust and recommend highly, so if you are interested or have any questions, just send me a personal message. Best of luck to both of you! :)

Hi A. S,
Im a Licensed massage therapist in Alabama. Some of my patients come in reporting that they have RLS and that Joan at Honey and Spice Health Foods in Trussville Alabama suggests an herbal suppliment for them and it works. You might consult with Joan on all the details perhaps she can help. She has done much research and been in business for a long time. God Bless. S. G. Her number is ###-###-####

How did you get the sleep test done on him? My little boy is 3 and has been experiencing signs of sleep problems for over a year now but he's constantly rubbing his feet together (since he was born) and I feel like it very well could be RLS.

Now, this may sound totally wacky, but it won't hurt trying, and it would work with any age as it does not have to be ingested. I read in an advice column by a pharmacist/natural remedy guru that many people report success with RLS by placing a bar of soap at the foot end of the bed, underneath the sheet. Weird, huh?

Just a little while ago a woman wrote back, saying she was was sceptical, but desperate as her husband had RLS and it disturbed her as much as him. She did it without his knowledge, and it worked!

Might be worth a try? It seems like it would not have any harmful side effects...

Good luck!
