Anyone Ever Had a HSG?

On Monday I have my first Hysterosalpingogram to see if my tubes are blocked. My husband and I have been trying to conceive for the last year with no luck and I was married before and we tried for almost 3 years. That means four years of heart break. I have PCOS and a hypothyroid. I am extremely nervous about this test. My mom had everything removed at 22 because of Cancer. Both of my older sisters have two beautiful children each, but for some reason they both had trouble conceiving their second. I have been on clomid for six months now. I have heard that this test sometimes clears the tubes and makes it easier to get pregnant. I hope that the case for me.
Has any one else had this test? Is it really painful? If any of you are comfortable, I'd love to hear your stories.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

So I had my HSG today and it was uncomfortable to say the least. It didn't help my nerves that I didn't know the radiologist preforming the test, the nurse that assisted her, or the male PA they brought in to observe the procedure. All that aside, everything was perfect! My tubes aren't blocked and the dye went through very quickly. Now I am going to ask my doctor to take me off of Clomid. It has made me ovulate, but it has caused other side effects that I actually believe are probably contributing to the trouble I am having getting pregnant. I am thinking injectables and metformin. Has anyone else not been successful with clomid and switched to something else that was successful?

I have had that test and it was nothing. Not painful at all. Didn't do anything for me fertility-wise, though. I am also hypothyroid with unexplained infertility, though doctors have said it could be PCOS (I have no symptoms of PCOS, though, and they agree, but keep saying maybe it's that. Sigh.) In any case, I did IVF twice and now have three beautiful children. I was super lucky to have it take right away and it was expensive, but totally worth it! I should say, too, that I'm an older mom (had my last two - identical twin boys - at 41). Good luck!

Dear A.,
I had this test done when I was very young.
I was a mess right out of the gate and never had a normal period in my life coupled with extreme pain.
I was so tensed about the test that they couldn't get the dye into me and ended up giving me a shot to relax me. That definitely helped.
The test itself wasn't really that uncomfortable.
It really does go easier if you can relax.
One of my tubes was completely non functioning. Or fixable. The other tube wasn't much better. I only had one sad little ovary and it was on the opposite side of the "tube of hope". My uterus was a mess. They told me that I would never have children.
Well.....along came my precious daughter when I was 24. 10 years later, along came my son.
So.....never say never.
:)
They told me too that sometimes the test can clear tubes if there is a slight blockage, so it is a possibility.
Just try to stay calm. The test will hopefully give you some answers. The answers I got weren't very good at all, but I still was blessed with two children.
As I said, the test goes much more easily if you can try to relax.
I wouldn't say any of it was painful really. Not pleasant when they fiddle with your woohoo and you have to be still. But, it wasn't bad. Especially after I relaxed enough for them to be able to proceed.

I wish you the very best. You can PM me any time as I was really troubled with fertility issues and went through a period of not handling it well emotionally. Two kids later, those days are just a memory.

Hang in there. Let me know how it goes, okay?

I had an HSG two years ago....it was a little bit uncomfortable just during the procedure and for about 20 minutes following the procedure, but the discomfort went away quickly. I would take something like ibuprofen ahead of time-that might help. Two weeks after the HSG, we got pregnant! "They" do say sometimes it helps clear things out to allow that to happen. Unfortunately, that pregnancy ended in miscarriage (I had a uterine defect, with they found in the HSG, and after my m/c they repaired it with surgery). Six months later, we got pregnant with my daughter, who is now 9 1/2 months old! I do not ovulate on my own and so we used a combination of Femara (a newer drug-acts similar to Clomid, but supposedly with less side effects) and Ovidrel shots to stimulate ovulation. My heart goes out to you-the fertility journey is so hard, isn't it!? I'll be sending you positive thoughts for a good result! :)

Mine was very painful, but I was constipated : ( I blame it fully on that. The pain ended as soon as the procedure was done. Mine came out ok, but one side went through faster than the other. I am not sure if it cleaned something out in the process or what, because I got pregnant immediately afterwards. We had been TTC for 1 1/2 I think. I had this done in 2004.
Good luck with the test and with TTC.

Yes, I've had the hysto-gram...

To be honest - it was a tad painful...and I've got a good tolerance for pain...i had cramping and some spotting afterwards...the technician was VERY nice!! And did her best to ensure I was VERY comfortable and let me watch the whole thing....
EDIT: I was VERY nervous....

It took us almost 4 years to get pregnant...we were on clomid, did the BBT and nothing happened...so when the choice was IVF - we said ENOUGH!!! We went back to having sex for fun and stopped thinking about babies and getting pregnant...we got a dog and 4 months later we were pregnant..

I would consult a Endochronologist...if you haven't already. PCOS is a label that many doctors like to put on women when they have irregular periods, etc. without really diagnosing it...

I understand where you are coming from...my mom had everything out at 36...my sister had hers out at 38...all the women on my mother's side had their stuff out by the time they were 40...so I do understand the nerves....

Has your hubby's guys been checked? If he doesn't have a lot - it may not be you that's holding up the show! :)

I know it's easier said than done - but don't stress...

I'm so sorry you're going through this! I had one, and it was a piece of cake. They inserted the dye in my tubes via catheter, and then said I might experience mild cramping, which I didn't. Then they scanned lower ab area and watched the dye travel and took some xrays showing my tubes were in fact open. I have heard about it clearing the tubes making way for bigger and better things. I hope it works in your favor. We ended up having more issues and required a lot of fertility treatment, but there was success in the end! Think positive, it WILL happen. Good luck to you!

I had mild cramping. If you aren't seeing a reproductive endocrinologist, I highly recommend you go to one. We wasted a ton of money and time going to ob drs that "specialized" in infertility issues. All of them did a few tests and then put me on clomid. I became an emotional wreck!! I gave up. We took a year off and a friend convinced me to go to the repro. endocrinologist. I was pregnant within 6 months without IVF. We used IUI.
I have heard that the dye test has helped some get pregnant. I hope it does for you!

I have never had the test myself but I have seen many women have the procedure. Most do very well. The women that have experienced pain and discomfort were typically extremely worried and tense before the exam started. 95% of women, although nervous and anxious about the results, were able to tolerate the exam well. So my advice to you is to remain calm. Try your best to relax and you should do just fine. Take an OTC pain reliever before the procedure and do not be afraid to ask questions. If you have specific questions about the exam, feel free to message me.

Good luck!

I had one done. The tech told me I couldn't have picked a better ob in the practice to do it. I had very mild cramping compared to what I go through monthly and the mild discomfort was over once it was done.

The culprit in your infertility is your thyroid. Get yourself into a yoga class and learn it. Do yoga every day and you will get pregnant.
You can also go to a really well qualified accupuncturist. That'll get your entire endocrine system working correctly.

I've had it done three times...twice for the first surrogacy and once for the second. I had cramping on the second one, but it was very mild and was over as soon as the doctor was done.

I took Tylenol before I got to the Dr's because other surros told me this would help. I didn't bother with it the last time. The last time I had a HSG I was laying there with my feet up in the stirrups and the nurse started pumping the stuff up in there. The doctor came in, did the ultrasound, patted me on thigh and said "Everything looks beautiful!" (That was a little awkward!) The nurse put a chucks pad under me and on the floor and then the tube came out and the stuff ran out. I suggest making sure you have tissues in the room or in your purse so you can wipe up a little.

*hugs*

It hurt a little bit, but nothing that you can't deal with. Make sure you are seeing a fertility specialist. I tried clomid and it didn't work. It made my uterine lining too thin, so nothing would transplant. I got pregnant a month after I had the HSG done. Good luck to you!
