Any Tried the Nestle Good Start Natural Cultures Formula?

Just wondering if anyone has tried the new formula from Nestle Good Start-Natural Cultures? It is supposed to help support the babies immune system. My daughter is breastfed but I also supplement with formula as I do not make enough milk to satisfy her. She is on the Good Start Supreme with DHA/ARA. I was considering switching her to the Natural Cultures formula. I know probiotics are good for adults but what about infants? Any advice?

What can I do next?

Dear D.:

I have breat fed three children, for about two years each, and I am an R.N. Breast feeding is based upon supply and demand. If you start using formula, your baby will suck less and you will then produce less milk. Barring some very specific problem with your body, if you drink lots of water and nurse regularly, your body should produce all the milk that your baby needs. There is no formula that will ever compare to the perfection of breast milk for the human baby.

Unfortunately, many, many women say their bodies cannot produce enough milk, they supplement, their bodies produce less and less, and before you know it, they are using only formula.

Please consider joining the La Leche League, or even calling one of their leaders for free advice, becuase they are a wonderful help to nursing Moms.

Good luck!

I haven't tried that formula, but my daughter is breastfed and get some formula since I don't always get time to pump enough during the day for her. But I noticed your baby is only 5 weeks, is that still right? I don't want to be nosy, but its unlikely you have a supply issue. your baby should want to be nursing every couple hours, some babies, like mine, wanted to nurse every 2 for about 2 months!! but adding formula instead of letting her nurse more, WILL hurt your supply. Here is a great link for some info, and the local Le Leche meetings are also great help. Unless your baby was losing weight after the first week or so, which they are supposed to, then you shouldn't have a supply problem. http://www.kellymom.com/bf/supply/low-supply.html#supply

whats important on this link is the list of things that do NOT mean a low supply, these are all things most moms see and think their baby is hungry.

This is a great site, breastfeeding is a great gift we can give our babies, but its challenging at times, but in the early weeks supplementing can rally cause problems if you plan to breastfeed.

again, I'm not trying to jump on you, I just was lucky to have a lot of experienced women around me, and I've learned a lot, and Id love to see you get the experience you want, and give your baby the best!

Oh, and about probiotics, just ask your ped, we give my daughter acidophalis, made for babies to help with her belly since she's had some constipation since starting solids. Good luck

That particular formula was what my doctor recommended when I started to supplement my son. It was great, there wasn't even the usual spitting up they have when adjusting!

Hi D. P,

I have a daughter that just turned 7 weeks old and at about 2 weeks we started giving her BioGaia's(brand name) lactobacillus reuteri (probiotic) because we had read several studies suggesting babies with colic do not have enough good bacateria in their intestines and they believe that may be a link to the colic. She has not had any signs of colic since (knock on wood)! Our doc at USF was thrilled that we were doing the drops and highly supports probiotics for babies.

I am not sure about the formula, I just breast feed but wanted to let you know the drops exists if you want to add that to your routine.

Take care,
Danielle

I haven't looked into the details on that formula, but if you choose to use a formula, then you don't have to use the formula with the probiotics in it. Especially if it's considerably more expensive. We bought the Jarrow brand of infant acidophilus from the health food store on recommendation from a holistic doctor. I would then add it into whatever drink my daughter had (actually I still do sometimes).
This way you can still breastfeed and give her the probiotics at the same time. I think someone mentioned they have drops in probiotics too, just try to make sure it's refrigerated because it live if it's refrigerated and they get more benefit if it's really fresh and live bacteria.
Good luck!

Yes, and it is the best. I tried every kind of formula and they all gave my daughter gas or an upset stomach. My friend recommended Good Start Natural Cultures and she was a completely different baby. She ate better and her stomach has never bothered her since. It also does not have a strong smell like enfamil or similac. It is the only one I will buy.
