Me and my 11 month old daughter are driving from Houston to Kansas in two weeks. We are going to visit my brother in the Army. I am traveling with other family members so I will not actually have to do the driving myself. When we get there we will be staying in a hotel. This is my first time to take a trip with a small child and I would really appreciate any and all helpful hints that anyone has acquired. We will be leaving at night around her bedtime, and leaving to come back in the morning. Also if anyone knows of any fun things to do with kids (I will also be going with my six year old niece) in the Junction City, Fort Riley area please let me know, I know it's a long shot. I appreciate it thanks.

What can I do next?

I have a silly hint..... buy a sippy cup with some sort of loop that you can hook to your bag, belt, etc... Then take "linkadoos" and link them to the handle on the roof above her. Link them to the sippy cup. Leave it alittle loose and make sure she can reach it. If she drops the cup or falls asleep it will dangle and when she wants it she can grab it.

I have done this on countless roadtrips and it has kept me from constantly leaning backwards to get the cup from the floor (really dangerous!!!) and from making tons of stops.

Hope this helps!

Not that I am a huge fan of sticking a tv in front of your child, but on long trips a portable DVD player is a life saver. I have used in on airplanes, in the car, and even in hotel rooms.(When the kids want to watch something different than the adults ) I bought mine at Costco. I used mine quite often for about a year and when it had a problem I just exchanged it. Costco is great about exchanges and had no problem exchanging. (As long as you have all the components and it's not visibly beaten up.) The reason that I tell you that is that they are not as sturdy as say the ones installed in the vehicles. They get jostled around a lot. Good luck!!

From my own experience it depends if the child is a good car rider already. My oldest was a bad car rider and the others were fine. Carry snacks, and drinks, stop frequently to let her stretch. When mine were small the tv in the car wasn't as accessible as it is today, that probally is a life saver. My oldest was a tough case but if I sang to her and played with her she'd get better. Good luck, and don't be discouraged, you'll have company which she'll probally like.

we just took a 13 hour trip with a 3 mos old, 18 mos old and a 9 year old. the dvd player was my saving grace... but make sure you have a car charger the battery doesn't last. Also a fun childrens cd. my middle one really likes the wiggles. i like the idea about the sippy cup I will have to use that one. also i have tied a mirror, (a real one not the kids kind they can't see in that) for $5 from kirklands, to the back of the front seat she loves to look at herself and make faces. good luck.

We drove to see my parents one time when he was about that age and it was a disaster, don't mean to scare you. We decided to drive at night time so he could sleep, well, it didn't work. We left at about 6ish and (his bedtime is 7:30) and he watched tv in the car and then fell asleep at his reg bedtime in the carseat. Well we (my husband and I) hadn't eaten dinner yet, so we stopped and bought fast food at 8:30. The drive in order woke him up. Then we got lost and my husband had to pull over, that woke him up. We finally reached our destination and the arrival at my parents house woke him up. Needless to say he didn't get a good night sleep. Being in a carseat asleep in one position is hard for a little one. We swore to never do that again. The next time we left as soon as he woke (6:30am) we woke up at 5 ate breakfast and got ready before he woke. When he woke we changed him and headed out. WE picked him breakfast on the way out, so he ate breakfast and I took a lot of stuff for him to do along the way (paper/markers/crayons, play doh and new toys (i hid toys ahead of time so they appeared to be new). We also stopped 2 times on the way down. It was a much better experience for him and us! Oh, the trip is about 6-7 hours. I think later when they are older and out of carseats, it would be better to make trips at night so they can sleep, or infants...
