hi - our carpet is pretty filthy and i was considering renting a rug doctor steam cleaner to try and clean it a little. Does anyone know how well they work - does it clean your carpet well, dry easily ( and quickly)? we have pretty thick carpet, so drying is important. just curious, any other ideas are welcome as well. also, if anyone knows how to remove roofing tar from the carpet, i really need to know that as well. thanks and hope to get some advice

What can I do next?

I rent one about every 6mo. they do work well, depending on how dirty your carpet is depends on how long it takes. I go slower in the high traffic areas just to make sure I get all the dirt. My house is about 2200 sq ft and it takes me about 6 hrs with my kids home to clean the carpets, if they are at school I can get it done much quicker. I don't know about tar sorry.

We have used Best Carpet Cleaners out of , I think, Blue Springs. Mike Harlan and his sun Patrick run it and have been very happy with them for the past 10 years. My in-laws have used them even longer.

If your carpet is really thick, you may want to consider using a company like Chem Dry, that uses environmentally friendly chemicals to clean your carpet rather than steam. Your carpets don't need drying time, and they get very clean. Your pad doesn't get wet either, so you don't have to worry about mold forming either. We've used a chem dry service before and have been very happy with the results. You can find a local dealer by searching on the internet. Good luck!

We had to rent one when our daughter spilled a cup of strawberry juice on the carpet! Eekkss! But yes, they work great! We didn't have any problems with the carpet drying. No idea about the roofing tar!

I have found that it is almost better (and not much more $), to have the rugs professionally cleaned. We use Oxi-clean cleaners, and they are really good (non-toxic). My husband is friends with the owner, so you might get a discount if you mention his name (Blake).
