My son is 9 years old and I found out he was obstipated in November 2007 and was probably constipated for a long time not realizing how bad. He would never complain of pain. He had to have a clean out in the hospital and we spent a week there doing a clean out and running several tests. The GI specialist say it can take 6 months to year or more for his colon to shrenk back to normal. We have been taking meds everyday along with a potty schedule. He has to go every 2 hours. I have to keep him in pull ups or we would be doing laundry all day. I just hope he will get the feeling back of knowing that he has to go. Doctors say that too will take time. It feels like a nightmare of having to deal with this problem everyday. But I know with the help of the Doctors we should get through this. I have 2 older children 15 and 17 years old and never had this problem. It's very heartbreaking to see your child go through this. He is very out going and loves to play AYSO soccer. I know this is hard for him too!

Dear T.,

Just think, you have the knowledge of what is happening to your child, how to make it better, and that it will be over at some time...quite a long time. But he will be better.

Do not dwell on what is wrong each day, just get on with trying to enjoy life. C. N.

If you live in San Luis Obispo County. Call Zona at The Natural Edge. She is in Grover Beach. She is AMAZING! Her number is ###-###-####. She will give you alternatives to western medicine that might just make a big difference in you childs life. I see Zona before I call my doctor and my doctor says he thinks that its a great partnership. Good Luck and be good to yourself too. If momma is stressed the whole house is stressed. Breath deep and good luck.

Oh I know what you are going through. My daughter is 9 and is going through this problem now. She was complaining about a mild tummy ache almost daily for a couple of months. We just has an X-ray done and were shocked. She was still going #2, but apparently not often enough! So, the doctor said she was backed up for at least a couple of months. So, she is on Miralax, but he wasn't very specific about how long to do it. So, I need to get in for a follow up appt as the doc that recommended this, was an urgent care doctor. So, I know this is not of much help, but I wanted you to know you are not alone ... I am right there with you ... right now actually! Also, she has had bed wetting issues for a while now, so she is on medication for that. E-mail if you need to chat. V.

T.,

Yes! My daughter had encopresis (I have many posts on Mamasource about it). She is 5 years old. She is now 100% better. We do Miralax, oh, maybe every few days or so. Her Dr. asked that I give it to her daily but she is doing so well, I'm toying with taking her off and just keeping a really close eye on everything. Yes, it does take about 3-6 months for the colon to shrink back to normal. It is also very easy to go back to becoming impacted so besides whatever your Dr. has recommended, make sure he is drinking plenty of water and eating really well (fruits, veggies, wholegrains, etc.). You say he goes about every 2 hours, are you talking about normal bowel movements or the squirts that get by the impacted stool? We did a 5 day clean out plan per the specialist we saw and that is all it took, now she goes once a day and hasn't worn a pull up since. I'm happy to tell you what worked for us if you want to email me directly but I wouldn't advise it to anyone as I am not a Dr. (-:

If you haven't found out already, this is very common, so hang in there, he'll get better!

you should get a book called "Prescription for Nutritional Healing" i'm sure there are things he could be eating and taking that could help. like maybe aloevera juice..i had a diverticulitis scare and i bought the book and took the supplements it said to take and when i went back for my colonoscopy the diverticulitis was gone!

hi T.-
it would be important to talk with your son and work on trying to find the root of the encopresis, barring any medical reason, it will be important to identify why the withholding began-- there are some good therapists who work with this issue. dealing with encopresis is a medical and behavioral issue- i would have to say that wearing pullups will probably make dealing with the issue more lengthy- as he needs to be a part of cleaning up himself and the clothing- from a behavioral perspective it is very important. it is a close partnership with working medically and behaviorally- i am a therapist that works with kids with emotioanl and behavioral problems and have seen this problem frequently.
