Any Other Moms Who Get Really Tired After Working Out/running?

Hi Moms- I know this isn't totally a "mom" question, but I guess it is in the sense that it's been going on since I've become a mom! I've always been a relatively fit person; used to run track, do aerobics, played soccer, etc. I had my second child a little over a year ago and I've found in the last six months or so, since I've been picking up on workouts that there are days when my whole body just feels drained after I run or workout...for the rest of the day...I'm not overworking out by any means. I workout 3-4 times per week, usually for 45min - 1 hour when I can (cardio + weights). This morning I went for a 4 mile run, which is definitely longer than usual, and I am SOOO tired...just wondering if pregnancy/lactating/mommy life could have depleted my body of something (iron?)...do I need to eat more protein? Any thoughts or similar experiences? Thanks!

By the way- I'm no longer breastfeeding, so it's not like I'm draining nutrition/calories that way... stopped about 3 mo. ago...

What can I do next?

Hi L.,
I had the same problem. I had an undiagnosed health problem. Shaklee supplements were what helped me. They are being used by the US Ski and Snowboard teams.
If you would like to know more let me know.

I know what you mean, Sometimes you need to figure out how much you can do and taking care of a child/ren, is a lot of work in itself so that needs to be taken in consideration. But, I would have my blood check for various things. I know that I felt very tired one time and it turned out that I have vit D deficiency. I didn't take meds for it that my other dr wanted me to take, so I asked my mid wife for list of foods and liquids with vit D and she did and I ate foods and drank things with vit D and now I am fine and healthy and no longer have that problem. I don't like to take meds and take vitamins anyways and eat healthy foods and taking meds was not an option for me. Check into that too and find out by having your blood drawn....let us know what happened. Pray for you that God will give you His Wisdom if you ask Him for it.

Are you eating enought pre and post workout and drinking enough water? Depending on the activity you need a sufficent amount of carbs before and protein and carbs post workout, also you may need to up the amount of water you drink before and after your workout. I had this same problem after I had my twins. I find a nice carby snack before and some carb/protien afterwards helps.

It would never hurt to get a physical, but I think the key is when you said you have two children. I know for me everything was different with two. Even the second pregnancy was exhausting. There is no resting when you feel like it. Just realize when there was only one child you could probably catch a break during naps, etc. With two it is non stop. Also, make sure you are well hydrated. Dehydration can also cause fatigue. I know I am so guilty of not drinking water when I am busy. I have to make sure and some days force myself to drink water. Hope you feel better soon.

having any other "issues"? If the tired continues have your thyroid checked. Even if it is only a little "off" it can cause fatigue. A.

Hi Mommy,

I have the same problem. I have 3 kids and I love to workout, but now I feel really drained sometimes after a workout, like for the rest of the day.

What helps me usually is to not work out so hard. I pushed myself a lot harder when I was young and single, but I also got plenty of sleep. If you workout for the same amount of time, but don't push til muscle failure with weightlifting and don't sprint as fast if doing sprints, instead jog/walk/jog/walk.

Also, I majorly need to eat a hot breakfast, like oatmeal. No more bowls of cereal for breakfast because it's not enough energy for me. And I notice that I need more vegetables. I used to get by without paying too much attention to those things and still felt great, but not any more!

You sound like me! I definitley have been diagnosed with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Ebstein Barr (I think many people have been) - basically when I get run down and tired I get sick though but some days I am just so tired I can barely function - gets worse the week before my period too - now I now this is more information than you need, LOL, but just letting you know about tiredness. My son is almost 3 now though, I work full time, go to the gym 3 - 5x a week now and my bottom line IMO is I just do TO MUCH throughout the day. Wake up to early, don't go to bed early enough and wake during the night most nights bc my son does. With a one year old I have to think you are not getting enough rest too. Get some bloodwork done though to rule anything out like anemia, thyroid, etc. You might just need to take some more rest days for now.

I wasn't in as good shape but not too bad when I found exercise becoming more and more difficult. I developed Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. It's not that I am not able to do things, it just takes a lot more effort to accomplish it and I feel it for days later. Don't over tax yourself and check in with your doctor.

I complained forever to my PCP after my first about being tired and she said it was normal, "new mommy" tired. I knew it wasn't right. Another doctor found I had a B12 deficiency. Definitely get a blood test, ask for the B12 to be checked, because it isn't standard.

Hi L.,

Have you had a CBC (blood test) lately? As we age, our body needs help sometimes in replenishing itself. I'm thinking iron in your case.
I wish someone had clued me in during my pregnancies about calcium depletion because I had so many cavities after having my kids! They really rob us of everything before they're even born! ;)
A couple servings of soy a day wouldn't hurt either. Chocolate soymilk is fabulous!

Good luck!

Have your thyroid checked. You could be hypothyroid.
