hot cocoa, getting to wear my favorite sweater, taking the kids to museums, crystal clear skies, the feeling that Christmas is here whenever it snows, my favorite carrols, and my favorite - a fire in the fireplace!
I love summer, the weather, less illness, etc, everything about it.
I feel like I am almost getting a phobia about winter so I wanted to hear from others with kids who really love winter. What do you love about winter? Answer should not include skiing or other sports :)
Thank you everyone for your absolutely amazing, detailed responses!! I am so grateful to have these beautiful descriptions to re-read as winter approaches, as I read these I could almost feel your joy in the winter time. Thank you thank you thank you!! This is so helpful and I am so touched at the time you all took to respond to me.

I love the winter! I can't stand the heat. Winter makes me feel alive. The only downside is that I can't enjoy the park with my son but that's when I just take him to the ymca or the library.
I love the quiet stillness of falling snow. I love the delighted look on my son's face when he plays in the snow. (I know this part is insane, but I love shoveling snow (not the wet heavy kind, but the light fluffy stuff.)) I love a roaring fire in the fireplace. I love comfy sweaters. I love cuddling under blankets with my kids and hubby. I love the winter holidays like Thanksgiving and Christmas where we get to see so many family members. I love the way the freshly fallen snow looks on the trees. And more than anything else, I love when the snow melts in the spring and we all come out of hibernation :)
Baking, baking, baking! Nothing brings better winter memories than coming in from the cold outdoors into a warm house that smells of wonderful things baking in the oven!
It's the perfect time to pull out board games and sit on the livingroom floor and play.

I absolute love winter. I enjoy spring and fall as well, but I could skip summer all together and be happy. The way I see it, you can always put on more clothes and blankets when your cold, but you can't take off your skin when your hot. I also love nothing more than to curl up on the couch with a blanket, a good book, and a cup of coffee or hot chocolate. I love Christmas Carols, I love going to the Pumpkin Patch with my kids, I love Thanksgiving with Family, I love trimming the Tree and Shopping for and giving Gifts (I love receiving them too). I love all the baking around the holidays (my figure needs me to leave it alone. Ha! Ha!). I love the Christmas Parade and the Lighting of the State Capital. I Love that my kids are at School most of the day instead of at home fight all day. I start getting excited at the fall storm starts and the leaves began to start turning. I start singing Christmas Carols at the first of fall.
I absolutely dread summer, the heat, the kids fighting, the sinus headaches, allergies, the constant mess throughout my house caused by my middle child who is a literal tornado. Summer depresses me!!!
A Fire in the fireplace!
Candles being lit!
Hot chocolate!
Hearty winter food!
Snowball fight!
Trying to build the perfect snowman!
Trying to build any igloo big enough to sit in!
Snow Angels!
Warm cozy socks!
Scarfs and boots!
Snow days for the kids!
A White Christmas!
Movie marathons with munchies b/c it's too cold to do anything else!
But best of all...that over all romantic feeling I get when I wake up on a day that has dumped a TON of snow and EVERYONE is late to work because we all have to take the time to shovel ourselves out...you look down your street and we are all doing the same thing...it's like "life" has frozen and we are all the same, just for a minute...
I tell my daughter that winter is when nature takes a much needed nap - the trees, grass, etc. go to sleep and snow is like their blanket. Winter can be relaxing for people too - To me, winter invokes more snuggling up in warm blankets, wearing warm cozy sweaters, sitting by the fireplace, drinking hot chocolate, warm soup, and a bit of a rest for us too from all the outdoor activities of summer and fall. Our family spends more time indoors together playing board games, reading books, doing crafts, playing pretend, etc. Though we also take advantage of the snow to do sledding and snowman making too!
And of course, who can forget all the wonderful winter celebrations! Winter has Thanksgiving (technically fall, I guess...), Christmas/Hanukkah, New Year's, and Valentine's Day. With the exception of July 4th, all my favorite holidays are in the wintertime!
Hope that makes you feel better about winter : ) And remember - flu shots and hand sanitizers do wonders in keeping illnesses at bay!
I haven't read all the responses, but I will say that I LOVE fall and winter. We used to live in upstate NY and moved back to South Texas 2 years ago right before our son was born. I truly miss the 4 seasons, particularly the cold ones. I miss walking our dogs in the snow at 4am, raking leaves, having a fire everynight, winterizing the house even....I even like shoveling snow and these are all things we don't get to experience in Texas. All the holiday cooking and baking, and decorating is much more fun when the weather is season appropriate too. The cold bleak weather is sometimes refreshing for mind and body.
I hate summer. I hate being hot and sweaty. I also hate feeling so warn out by the heat, that I don't get stuff accomplished. Here are the things I love about fall/winter. I love the changing colors (fall colors are pretty to me), I love carving pumpkins, I love shopping for cute sweaters, I love all of the fall/winter candles you can buy and the smells...mmmmm. I love to cook and bake (in the summer you heat up your house even more, and who wants a hot hearty meal in the summer time), this winter I am going to introduce cooking/baking to my toddler.
Even though I do not ski, I do love to take snow trips. I love the smell of the rain. I love to see a beautiful blanket of freshly fallen snow. I love to see my baby in feety pajamas. I like building a fire in our fire place. I like the idea that the two warmest family holidays are both in the winter (Thanksgiving and Christmas). I also like that one of teh fun holidays, Halloween, is in these seasons as well. I can't wait to see my baby's reaction on christmas day. Egg nog, making ginger bread houses, hand print turkey's, icing cookies, making stew.
Fresh, home made bread and the smell fills your house. Freshly brewed hot coffee (I don't drink hot coffee in the summer). I like seeing an overcast sky and then the sun suddenly peaks through and how it makes the ground sparkle from all the rain drops. I like to hear the howl of the wind, and cuddling up with my family. Buying a new pair of warm, cozy slippers.
I am looking forward this year to making a snowman with my baby.
Hot oatmel/cereal for breakfasts (I don't eat this in the summer). I like seeing all of the Santa Clauses outside the stores, shopping for my baby's christmas dress. I love the fact that I can accomplish more because I am not sweating to death. I save a ton on my electricity bill because we aren't running the air, and we don't turn the heat up high. Flannel pajamas, and robes.
Can you tell I am ready for fall/winter? Thats just the things off the top of my head. I LOVE winter. What depressed me last year is it was my first Christmas in southern california, and while it was chilly at night, during the day it was 72 and sunny outside. It just didn't feel like Christmas. Last year my baby was too young to enjoy a lot of things, so this year it's a big "to-do" for me. =)
I LOve love love fall and winter. Most of our great family traditions happen in the fall and winter months. Family traditions can be anything you make them, from popcorn and movie night, to pizza night...they don't have to involve a lot of money, for example a pizza night where everyone helps "Make" the pizzas is a lot more fun then ordering pizzas. Making cookies together is fun. Going on nature walks when the fall leaves are out is fun, driving around to see Christmas lights, caroling...potlucks! Playing cards or board games, having company over for coffee and dessert or even apple cider...so many fun things to do during the cooler months...also you could start making ornaments as gifts or just a special ornament each year for your own tree, or making gifts to give to the elderly like wreathes or cookies in a jar...adopt a grandparent at a retirement community...
Well, I don't know if sledding counts as a sport, but I love doing that with the kids. Same thing with just a low key ice skate. We also love playing in the snow - snowball fights, snow angels, etc.
A favorite breakfast "treat" in our house is a mug full of snow with maple syrup drizzled on top.
I love that on a winter weekend it's totally acceptable to stay in your pjs all day.
I love that because it's darker longer in the morning the kids might sleep later than they do in the summer : )
I also love the quiet that comes with a blanket of snow.
I do totally understand that cooped up feeling that comes with winter. I had someone say once that there's no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing. I'm not sure I totally buy that, but with good winter gear, I find it just as nice to be out in the winter as the summer.
have fun!
I've always lived in a four-season climate, and I LOVE all four seasons. I've discovered that if I looked for the good stuff about the time of year instead of the bad stuff, I always did find good stuff.
BTW, I lived in upstate New York until I was twelve, and I remember those winters - they were almost as beautiful as Colorado ones! (Almost.)
In winter the snow is lovely - especially from inside looking out. I have to be more careful when I drive, but when I'm at home I can't stop looking at the snow falling. I run outdoors with my camera and try to take pictures of snowflakes.
Even the sunlight looks different in winter than in summer, at least where I live. A snowy landscape against a blue sky is breathtaking. The plants that stay green in winter (like holly) are beautiful. A snowstorm is amazing, too. The air is bracing and when I step outside (properly bundled up), I'm thankful that I can breathe it in.
Winter clothing is different in color and texture - ever notice that on other people? It's not just the absence of shorts and halter tops. The heavier fabrics give a whole different ambiance wherever there are people around.
Around here, the birds and squirrels aren't phobic about winter. They're hopping and racing and seeing who can get to the food first.
My dog goes crazy, running around in the snow in the back yard and trying to tunnel in it.
Winter sunsets are early, but they're often very beautiful, and then when it's dark I can see lights from my neighbors' houses and they look magical.
My children always LOVED winter when they were kids. They had a great time outdoors - and then indoors, too, when they had to get warm. My grandchildren feel the same way. My son's house has a small sort of hill in the back, and he ices that hill so his girls and their friends can slide down on their saucers. They have lots of good family time building snowmen, shoveling, and doing other things together. When they come inside, I think the cold and snow must be good for them, because they're happy to settle down and play good-naturedly for a while.
On a comparative scale, winter brings cleaning up after snow, but most of the bugs have moved south. There may be storms, but one has to prepare for hurricanes and tornados, too. You have to pull out sweaters, but there are beautiful sweaters just waiting to be worn. Winter colds are nasty, but so are summer colds. Driving can be tricky, but .... well, um, you learn how to do it.
Enough rhapsodizing... today at my house it's still in the eighties! I can't start making hot chocolate yet!
I despise winter, but my kids love it even more than summer! So, I have to find things to like about it. One thing I love about winter is that pulling the kids on a sled is GREAT exercise. So is shoveling snow! And huge snowdrifts transform our big yard into a "moonscape" that is ripe for exploring.
I don't know if this really helps. I hate winter. I was born in Minnesota, moved to Hawaii and then back to Minnesota. Every winter I think of the beautiful Hawaiian valley that I lived in and think......WHAT IS THE MATTER WITH ME!? Why did I move back to the frozen tundra? Haha!
But, while I am not in love with winter.....I am trying to make friends with it! :)
Winter if my favorite season, summer my very least!
I don't mind, actually enjoy the cold. I am hot-blooded (and close to menopause) so the cold feels good to me. My theory is that there is only so much you can take off in the summer to be decent and still feel hot-sticky and miserable.
I also enjoy the quiet stillness. Sometimes all the summer 'noise' makes me crazy! Think about it; yes kids laughing and playing are one thing. But motorcycles, handymen yelling over the hammering and drilling because someone is always getting something done to their house. Lawn mowers, weed eaters, motorcycles. . .
I cook more in the winter and healthy. Roasted vegetables, baked chicken, homemade bread, etc. Sorry, but I'm not heating up the house more than I have to in the summer!
My kids are older, so it's really the dogs and I who LOVE the snow. They are just like human kids and will play for hours in the snow. And I will be out with the dogs and not have to worry about snakes and other creepy crawly things!
Winter is wonderful!
My kids are a bit older now but I love the cold weather. I love being out in it and then knowing that I can come home to my warm house and have hot apple cider or hot chocolate. The kids love to snuggle after being outside. It keeps everyone healthy in the winter if they get outside a lot. When we got a dog, we had the healthiest winter because we weren't cooped up all the time. Of course, if there's snow, we love playing in it and I enjoy shoveling it - good exercise and it's usually so peaceful and still outside when it snows.
Enjoy!
I'm a "Winter Mom" for sure! Winter means snuggling up - it's a calm time for me and my family.
Winter is when nature rests up ready for the busy Spring, and I guess that it's the same for us.
We don't go skiing or anything like that, so that's not why we like it!
I can't put my finger on any one thing that makes Winter special - it just is to us. You just need to find the positives really :-).
Good luck!
I love snuggly sweaters, fires in the fireplace, hot chocolate, spiced cider, football games, pink cheeks, cute hats, crunchy leaves, snowflakes, wearing boots, Thanksgiving turkey, Christmas music, Fireworks on New Years, snow flakes, making chili, and having sex with my hubby under the comforter while we try not to touch each other with our cold toes.
I love playing in the snow, snow angels, sleds, snowmen. I love cocoa, I love that it is cold enough to bake all the time. I can get stir crazy but we plan to see friends to break up the days. Just don't let yourself get stuck inside.
Being from Kansas you expect the unexpected with all seasons. But I love Fall/Winter the tree's changing colors the nites getting cooler the kids playing in the yard till early sun down. The candles of warm apple crisp, pumpkin spices baking up a batch of cookies, cinnamon rolls/corn breads to go with chili dinners & making chicken noodle soup after along day it is nice to have something that warms you up and tastes great too.All the decor changes from Halloween to Chrismas the excitment from the kids to go trick or treating having that bag of candy they earned & will enjoy for weeks on end.The never ending I want Santa to get me that for Christmas & going out to get them in wee hours of the night going from store to store to get those special gifts for them & waking up to fresh snow Christmas morning the kids still in jammies & waiting patiently for all to get up and out of bed to see what did Santa bring me this time to our family. My kids love playing outdoors they love making snow cone slushies with flavored syrup or juicesI however prefer to stay inside I have become so use to it that every winter come sleding time I was unable to go I was either pregnant or have a baby to attend to that is too small to go outside.I don't wear a winter coat much the layering is essential part of my wardrobe it is too much hassle to have so much stuff the kids get new winter coats new boots new sweatshirts it is another time where the shopping never ends for a new season & see what they have outgrown & how big they have gotten from last winter.I do need to get all my pictures in order into albums this is the winter it'll all get finished.I try to do less outings to the store & such unless needed rather spend time home smelling the aroma of candles cleaning cooking & eating fresh baked goods!!!My kids rarely get sick but if they do it's good to know i'm home with them...Have a great Fall & Winter
It probly doesn't help your cause that NY has been slammed with record snow these last few winters... It's easy to see why you are dreading it!!
But to answer your post, I love winter. I love the coziness of "tucking in" for the evening with my husband and kids. We put a fire in the fireplace and play board games together after homework and dinner are done.
We spend more time together in the winter (we always seem to be going a thousand different directions in the summer), so I feel like I have my family back for a few months.
There are a few posts that emphasize the importance of decent winter gear, and I agree. It's makes all the difference. Survive this winter and then at the end of the season, you should be able to get some good coats for a bargain. Gloves and hats, too.
Look for the beauty in each season! Let us hear from you this winter so we know how you're doing!
I think we all get caught up in the whole winter thing. We feel bogged down and less motivated. And who can blame you when it takes a sweater, coat, scarf, hat and mittens just to go get the mail!
But, over the years I have tried to have a better outlook on this whole winter thing. Surprisingly, it has worked! I have found fun things to do both indoors and out, I have discovered a wonderful thing called layering! And a daily dose of vitamin D seems to do the trick.
So I dont think I can claim love to winter but I do enjoy it much more now than in the past. Hope this helps and you find a way to enjoy the colder weather!
My favorite season is winter. Mainly because I cannot stand being hot and sweaty. I absolutely love fires, and wearing warm clothes. Burning seasonal candles, and having my whole house smell like it. I love the food that comes along with winter, chili, soups, baking. I don't make any of those types of things in the hot summer. Football! The holidays! Bundling up and going out to play in the snow! Board games!
In the middle of winter, around late January we go to the Great Wolf lodge. Don't know if its where you live, but it has an indoor water park and many other fun activities. You get to have 24 hours of summer with ice and snow outside!
i used to love winter and now i dread it. i dread it because of sniffles turning into ear infections. i am even contemplating moving back too FL because of this but of course need to come up with a solution with hubby who works here.
we have now experienced 4 winters with our children. the first two, we didn't know what to do. the last two we made trips, rented places and went sledding. this winter we're going to pick up skiing, all of us. i have already booked a cabin, booked carriage riding with my kids, and am looking into getting them ice skating classes. my kids love winter, they love when i bundle them up and we go play outside.
we love winter holidays (t-giving and xmas), and then february comes around we go on our trip. it's nice. so bottom line, if it weren't for my fear of ear infections, i'd be ok with winter. but because i do have that fear, i dread it. i wish i could close my eyes, open them and i'd be summer again. but since that won't happen, i have to do everything possible my kids enjoy winter as much as possible.
That IS my ONLY answer as to why I love winter. We spend 10 hours a day, 3-5 days a week on the mountain, most of it snowboarding. Some of course building snowmen, or doing school (we homeschool, so we take our school with us wherever we go), or heck...even dogsledding if we head up to BC.
We're in Seattle. "Winter" here (temps below freezing, maybe snow for a day or two) only lasts about a week ((ditto summer, as a good friend of mine quipped 'I'm so glad summer fell on a weekend this year".. but we only get a week or two a year of temps over 80 degrees and sunshine)). It's 40-50 degrees and raining almost constantly from Halloween until the middle of May, and we don't get guaranteed sun until July 4th (when OUR area breaks out the grills). AND the vast majority of the time we have "white or grey" skies. If it's not in the 50's and raining... (and not our two weeks of summer or winter) then it's in the upper 60s to mid 70's with scattered clouds. It is chilly and DAMP here, almost year round. Miserable weather.
But there's snow in the mountains from Nov-Apr, with BLUE skies and sunshine unless it's actually snowing. Heaven. Vitamin D and snowsports.
I am way late in responding but just couldnt help it! Here are some thoughts in random order:
New sweaters!
Having time to sit and play scrabble with my son!
Snuggling with my husband by the fire!
Thanksgiving/Christmas/Hanukah!
Fresh smelling air!
Boots!
Snowball fights!
Watching my dogs eat snow!
Baking!
Cold eskimo kisses on cold noses!
Caroling!
Figure Skating on tv!
The first snow fall is beautiful. Especially when you have big fat fluffy flakes that just paint the outside white and make it all look new.
New snow smells great, and it's fun to catch flakes on your tongue.
No mosquitoes! Who doesn't love that?
Winter is just different when you are a kid.
Your biggest concern is finding your boots/mittens/sled and building a snowman, making snow angels or fort or getting a snow day off from school.
When you're an adult, you worry about shoveling/plowing it, digging out your mailbox (or the plow knocking your mailbox over), driving in it (snow tires, scraping frost off the windows, anti freeze windshield fluid, etc), salting/gritting down your sidewalk. A snow day with school off means you have to find alternate day care for your kids if you can't get a day off from work. After a few days the snow looks dirty and piles of it refreeze to form almost glacier hard ice that takes forever to melt.
There are things I like about all seasons.
Flowers in the spring. First day the garden is dry enough to plant new plants.
The first day where it's warm enough to wear shorts in the summer (the smell of sun screen lotion). Sunshine makes me feel better - must be that rush of vitamin D.
Pumpkins in the fall (and the smell of Thanksgiving dinner cooking).
Hot chocolate in the winter is good, but it's best right after you come in from outside and the warm mug feels so good in your hands.
I'm originally from Montana and absolutely love the four seasons (mostly fall). But my reason for loving it is more than just the beauty of the weather. Yes, I love the white purity of the snow, the chill on my nose, or the ability to cuddle with my man or my little guys wrapped in a huge blanket, etc, but the best thing I like is the knowledge that time is passing by. Summer with its bright colors fading into the scarlets, oranges, and yellows of the fall season and moving quickly into the crisp chill of winter. By the time I get so sick of winter and snow, little blades of grass can be found poking up out of the ground to let you know that it's almost over. I love it.
My family is now in CA for the 2nd year and I am so sick of the constant weather. I am always checking the calendar to make sure that it's not the same day, there's nothing to look forward to here except rain and sunshine. Ugh. The idea of scraping off the windshield or shoveling the walk and driving on icy roads are not my idea of a fun time, but at least I know there will be an end to it.
And actually, people get sicker in the Spring and Summer times because the germs can multiply in warm moistness, they cannot survive in cold weather. Bacteria needs three things to grow: heat, moisture, and time.
I didn't read all of your responses (sorry I have only a few minutes) so I may repeat. We love making snowmen, snow angels and my boys really like it when I bring in snow from outside and let them play with it in the sink. They use spoons, measuring cups. All the fun of snow in our cozy house :o)
I do!
I live in the deep south (coastal GA) and it is hot and very humid here ALL the time... except late December thru sometimes mid -March, if we're lucky. I have worn shorts on Christmas many years. (This past year was an exception... we had a really nice cool winter). I LOVE wearing sweaters and bundling up to read a good book. I love comfort food like chili, that is just too hot to serve/eat during the warmer months. And I love feeling energized to go out and play with the dog and take long walks with her, and do yard work... any other time of the year (except winter) the heat and humidity are too oppressive to do any of those things for long. I live close to the beach, and that is nice. I would miss it if we moved somewhere else, but it's also not my FAVorite thing to do. It requires a lot of cleaning up after (sand gets into everything!). I actually prefer going to the beach in winter and walking along the shore with a stiff windbreaker on! I Love filling a wheel barrow with leaves and the kids pushing each other across the yard with it.
I like summer.....fall as well, but just that crisp part of fall where it's breeze is nice enough to make you comfortable,I love breathing the air in during this time makes me feel all happy inside....plus my birthday is on Halloween so I am sure that it reminds me of good memories. :>) but,as far as winter no,no,no....lol. I do like christmas....I am happy then and also think the snow is pretty but the chill of the cold and the dark, depressiveness about it and being tied down inside no,I do not like this.
I, like you, love summer. I do not like winter at all. I hate being cold and as far as playing in the snow...I hate being cold and wet at the same time! Our kids love playing in the snow, so long as it's not below zero outside. If the sun is shining and it's not too cold they like playing in the snow. I remember as a kid not really loving the snow. My mom would get us all bundled up, send us out and I would be back in pretty fast. It made my mom crazy. She would say "why do even bother having me get you all bundled up?". It always looked like the kids outside were having so much fun playing in the snow. Then I would get out there and realize that it was not fun at all for me. Thank goodness my husband is more of a snow guy than I am. He usually plays with the kids outside while I stand on the sidewalk taking video. lol
Oh how brilliant all of you moms are out there.
I, too, do not like winter but I did get some good ideas from your answers.
What I do make sure I do is this:
*Buy one new lovely sweater
*Stock up on Fuzzy socks and sweatshirts
*Have hot chocolate.
*Finally use the oven (I refuse to use it in the summer) and cook the best meals ever. Hubby bakes goodies (I'm not the baker in the household.)
*I look forward to going to the apple orchard w/the family. We take hot cocoa, buy carmel apples, cider and a hamburger lunch there. Yum.
*I do not like to bundle up but I HAVE to stay warm so layering, gloves and scarves are key!
*I like to use our wood burning stove.
* I like the fall holidays (Halloween, Thanksgiving and Xmas).
* I try to carve out some time to read (hard w/the little one but...)
* Went outdoor iceskating once.....fun.
*Oh and my new fave: I take my little one to the mall to play around inside on their carousel and playlands. Thank goodness for that! He's an outdoor kid and I would go crazy w/o that opportunity.
So I'm with you 100% but try not to dread it and look for the good in it: baking some new recipes, fires in the fireplace, reading, visits to the apple farm and reading.
