Any Mirena Horror Stories?

Hey moms...I asked a question earlier today regarding my thyroid as well as my Mirena. Most people said it was maybe my thyroid, but I don't think they understood that I have had the Mirena for two years, as well as the problems for about that long. At the beginning of this school year, I decided to finally get myself checked out and dr. found out I had a thyroid problem. Well, that's still not fixed, but after reading some other things about Mirena, I'm beginning to think that it is a combination of that plus my thyroid.
Here are the symptoms: no sex drive (I can count on both hands the number of times I've had sex with my husband in the last two years...and that's not saying I was interested)....not interested in anything really. High anxiety and stress, acne on my face, back...very dry hair (on the ends), hair loss (probably from thyroid), major irritability/anger for NO reason, extreme forgetfullness, the list could go on and on. The newest (and most embarassing) symptom is kind of a foul odor "down there". Sorry for the TMI, but I just can't stand all of this anymore! Anyone else have a similar problem with Mirena? I'm headed to the dr. next week, but just wondering....Mirena, thyroid, both....or just a nut job :)

What can I do next?

I had lots of issues with Mirena - my hair fell out in chunks and despite exercising and food restriction I could not drop an ounce (no exagerration -the scale did not shift for 3 months). After doing some research i had it removed about 4 months after I had it put in - within a few weeks I'd lost a pound without even trying.

Can't speak for anything else but it definitely did not agree with me and I have no regrets about removing it. Went back on the pill...not the best solution but having baby number 3 would be WAY worse. LOL

Good luck

If you are having those kinds of symptoms I would stop using Mirena and get your thyroid under control. You may be one of those people who cannot take birthcontrol pills/hormones. I think you will feel better once you get those 2 things under control. Check with your dr about the odor you may be a UTI and need some antibiotics. In the mean time you can do a sitz bath with baking soda, small amount--that will help cleanse.
Good luck.

No horror stories here. I have had 2 Mirenas (7 years) and have never had any side effects. I think in many cases some problems/issues are coincidental. We have to consider age, hormones and aging. So many of the problems I hear that some think are related to Mirena are really attributed to age, hormones and getting older.

I will be honest with you, I just got mine removed because of serious problems. At first I loved it, no problems, no period, etc. All of a sudden I constantly wanted to rip everyone's head off for no reason. I will get very angry and stressed out for no reason what so ever. I called my primary physician and he prescribed me Zoloft. I have always been a very happy laid back person until this. I also was constantly having symptoms of pregnancy. I don't know how many tests I have bought in the last 2 years. I finally called my OB for the third time and we decided to remove it last week. It is like night and day! I am really happy for the first time in 2 years. I guess some people's body can't handle the hormones. I would much rather have a period and be in a good mood! I hope this helps.

I have had really bad fluctuating hormones in the last 6 months due to a cyst (or cysts) in the uterus so I was put on cyclical progesterone for a few cycles. Our hormones do some crazy stuff out of the blue or sometimes with stimulation such as having an IUD. Whatever it is I am willing to bet your doctor has seen it before just be clear about all the symptoms. I was pretty opposed to taking hormones having not taken birth control since before pregnancy with my first who is 6 years old however regulation for a short time can help with many of the things you mention

Mirena was trouble from the start for me!!
First off I had to go back to my Dr twice to have the strings cut because they were stabbing my husband when we had sex!! Then she had to cut them so short that when I went to get it taken out after the five years is have to get surgery. well I started getting infections a lot down there, which I had never had before mirena back to back to back, which made having a sex life impossible. then I had Sharp pain in my uterus and I couldn't take it all anymore so I had surgery to get it take out 3 months ago. Oh and it messed with my hormones and made me super emotional anxious all of thee above.

I don't have the mirena- but I do have hypothyroidism- and I had all those symptoms while I was on synthroid for the thyroid. Sometimes that particular medicine actually causes the symptoms- all that you describe are related to low thyroid levels- I finally got off it because my memory got so bad I forgot to take my meds for a week- and then I realized how long it had been and I felt better- so I stopped- I did talk to my doc about it and she monitered me and my levels went back to normal for a while(they were off when I was pregnant) I have had to take thyroid meds off and on since then- but never synthroid again- and the other brands didn't have the same reaction for me. So, it is possible that it is your thyroid- See if you can switch meds for about a month. Hope this helps!

I have had Mirena for almost a year now and it has been amazing for me. No period, cramping or any of the side effects that can occur. But if you believe the mirena could possibly be causing any of the negative things happening with you; you probably should just get it removed. No point in suffering if that could possibly solve some or all of your issues.

Before I continue, I want you to understand that I am not in any way criticizing you for choosing Mirena, although it's a shame that doctors, who should know better, prescribe dangerous contraceptives to women. Have you read the possible acknowledged side effects of Mirena? There are probably other side effects that are not admitted.

Follow this link to a page on the Couple to Couple League's website to find out how to plan your family in a way that improves your health instead of adding poisons to your body that sabotage its attempts to function in a healthy, normal way. http://ccli.org/nfp/contraception-sterilization/index.php

My husband & I have always used natural family planning when we were not ready for another child. It has been a huge blessing in our marriage, and I have never had to subject my body to the dangers of contraception. Contraception interferes with the closeness between husband & wife, creating a barrier between them, even if it's not technically a barrier method.
Ask your husband to read the side effects of Mirena and other contraceptive methods, then look at the Couple to Couple League website together (www.ccli.org), and see whether you're ready to try modern natural family planning, which is as effective as contraception but without the bad effects on your health and on your marriage.

Once again, I am not intending to be critical of others' choices, but do want you to know that there is a much better way available for you to plan your family. It's a blessing that you'll be grateful for if you give it a try. There are other NFP providers that are good, but I always recommend the Couple to Couple League because we learned NFP through them and are completely confident in the organization & the method.

Hi,
I posted a question a while ago about the different experiences with hormonal and non hormonal iuds and a few people described what you have above. Try searching for it on this site or under my questions and I think some of those answers will be helpful to you...just in case some of those ladies do not see your question. I think the answers sold me on the non-hormonal one though.
