I have to send my crappy patio umbrella back through ups. Good thing I no longer have the box! UPS says they will kindly construct one for me, for $40!! How can they get away with that??? Ugh!
Any ideas where I could find a 6 x 2ft that doesnt cost $40??
What a pain in the butt!

What can I do next?

Costco or a big box store like Target or Walmart will likely give you one. You can also construct one out of a couple of boxes and some duct tape. My husband is always shipping gun parts that are odd sizes, he "cuts and pastes" boxes all the time.

How about going to a store that sells patio umbrellas (or patio furniture) and seeing if they have any umbrella boxes they can give you from what they may have unpacked or something.

I'd go to an appliance or furniture store and ask them about their boxes. You might be able to cut down a fridge or table box.

Check with some of the storage places... they frequently sell boxes. You can also get a couple and cut and tape some together... just use lots of tape!

Make O..
Get sheets of cardboard (sturdy) and cut fold guides and construct O. yourself.
Doesn't have to be pretty...just a box.
I used to make these things all the time.
Sturdy cardboard sheets and LOTS of packaging tape.

Do you need a new CHristmas tree? Or are you going to buy a new umbrella? Maybe you can use THOSE boxes, wrapped in brown packng paper.

I once had to create a box to ship a treadmill back to the store. I called a fitness store and they told me when they place their boxes in the trash and when they are picked up. I took a couple of boxes to make one for the size I needed. I used duct tape on the inside of the box "seams" and clear packing tape on the outside. Then stuck cardboard pieces in the box once the treadmill was actually packed to prevent it from moving around. Kind of like when you buya TV or something and it has styrofoam or cardboard. I think I paid about $8 with tape and such.

I would pick up a few boxes at Lowes or home depot and combine them to make one large box. That's what the people at UPS will be doing. Just be sure to get a box that will not crush easily, they are marked on the bottom with the specs. (Usually in a stamped box).

Check out Home Depot or Lowe's. They have cardboard boxes. I can't say if they have them to fit your dimensions. You might have to get creative and buy 2 boxes and incorporate them, tape them together to make one shipper.
Understand that you're looking for a custom box. If they don't exist on a normal basis, then it's going to cost. And what UPS does might not be any different than buying two boxes at Home Depot and taping them together yourself.
Christmas tree boxes are a great idea, because you can buy 'body bags' for storing Christmas trees. Bed Bath and Beyond carry them. Bronner's has them. A lot of these home decor mail order companies carry them. I'm sure hardware stores would too. Anyone selling Christmas trees would have the boxes or body bags
