Wondered if anyone has built or bought a really good sand box for children? Also, I hear it can be difficult keeping it covered without cats getting into it. Any suggestions or ideas?

What can I do next?

Well.. we went through this a while ago and after much consideration we decided to buy the cute little lady bug that comes with a lid, it holds lots of sand and has been great for hours of play. The lid fits great, the kids have enjoyed it and I think it cost all of 24.00. I hope you get some great ideas and have loads of fun in your sandbox of choice!

I just think that's such a good idea to build a sandbox. Now, why didn't I ever think of that? I know I've seen them, so why did it never enter my mind? Thanks for the idea, I may just use it.

I have seen that a lot of the store ones have hard covers so I would assume they help keep out cats. The main complaint I've heard for several of them is that they get water in them easily and then they have to be cleaned. I think that sounds normal, like it should be expected.

We bought one from Toys R Us when my son turned one (he's now 3 1/2)and we have never had any problems. It is the tan "stone" looking (rectangle shape) sandbox. It comes with a lid that fits pretty tight. Once in a while we find lizards inside, but never any problems with cats or moisture (which can also be a problem for sandboxes. I hope this helps.

another Idea for a "sand " box is to get the small smooth rocks and use them instead of sand or ground up tires, not as messy and the cats don't use it!
