I keep seeing these mesh things that you stick food in for your baby - is it just another thing to buy or is there merit to these?

What can I do next?

I loved them.
For most fruit no good, but for melons I loved it...

TEETHING!!!

Added bonus!
I stuck ice cubes in the mesh when my daughter was teething and she LOVED it.
She sucked the water out of the mesh and the cold helped numb her gums...
When it was REALLY bad I gave her infant Tylenol and then the "Ice" binkie... it helped relieve the pain until the tylenol kicked in...

If you don't use it for fruit, I highly suggest using it for teething!

We used one with my 1st daughter. It was very hard to open I usually had to have my husband open it for me. It was very hard to clean and get all the little pieces of food out. It is also very messy, but what isn't messy when a baby is eating it. I will probably try it again with baby #2 just because I have one I wouldn't go out and buy a new one though.

I really liked these.... i would put bananas and other fruits inside and would know that he wouldnt get a big chunk.. its also good if your child is teething .. by using frozen fruits or even and ice cube ( with someone watching ) would help with the pain and wanting to chew....

I had one of these and loved it! I could give my kids so much more variety of fruits because they could just mush it up with their gums and then suck the juice out. They are good when baby is teething too because you can put harder stuff in there without worrying about choking. They're great for fresh foods like apples, peach, melon etc.
It is just anoyther thing to buy but I really liked being able to give my sons fresh fruit without having to boil and puree anything.

Reminds me of a neighbor I used to have who poured various kinds of baby food into a bottle with a nipple that she'd cut the hole open on, and her baby "drank" this yukky mix of meat, fruit, veggies, watered down with formula. Gross! Children need to learn to eat the normal way unless they have some rare reason they cannot. If a child can't eat with a spoon or fingers, they're not old enough for solids. I haven't seen these things but I'm amazed at the number of ways manufacturers find to get parents' money! You can easily mash your own food or use a little babyfood grinder or a blender. You can make your own popsicles with fruit and whole milk yogurt if baby is old enough for yogurt. I guess if it works and baby likes it, there's no real harm as long as they're also learning to eat the usual way. The more in control of their eating they are, the better.

All I ever used mine for was when she was teething. It worked well for that, but I wouldn't use it soley for feeding. It is better just to mash up the fruit in a bowl.

we thought they were disgusting...messy and hard to clean...would you want to eat your food through a screen? i agree w/ another person who posted...you're better off just mashing the fruit/veggie yourself and learning to eat the correct way...

i would consider using it for teething though...my daughter didn't have any problems and teeth didn't bother her so it wasn't an issue...but i think the frozen fruit/ice idea would work well!

My daughter absolutely would NOT use that thing. She hated the mesh and even if I got the food to squeeze through so she could taste it, she would cry and look at me like "why don't you take it out of there so I can eat it?"

I found that these had merit...especially now with the summer coming! I loved giving my kids frozen fruit in the summer...it was great for teething, getting used to new tastes and textures and for cooling down! I was never a mom who got nervous about giving "real" food, though and only used these occasionally. If you are nervous about giving bite sized foods or finger foods, this is also great because it has to be small enough to fit through the mesh for them to eat! I loved mine! Good luck!

its jsut another gimik to buy. You want your kid to eat fresh food than smush it your self. Those bags are only going to give them juice from the food and if they have teeth they will chew wholes in them. I would just smush and give them the food.

Hi Kelli & Michael,

I'll chime in here, too. My son loved his. We used it the same as everyone else - with fruit & crushed ice. It really is worth getting. If you have a dishwasher, just throw it in there in one of those little baskets that go on the top rack & it's good to go (although it's a good idea to get the remaining food out of the mesh first). Trust me - you'll love this!

We used these alot when my daughter was teething, but too young to handle a popcicle on her own. We also put frozen fruit in there when she was teething. That is about the only reason I used them, but they were very useful then. I bought mine at Kmart and it was much cheaper than babies r us.

My daughter LOVED this, I would put watermelon in there and she would suck and bite on it for at least 20 minutes. I did find it to be very messy though...but worth it.

I used mine a lot with fruits and veggies. And yes some fruits are easy to mush up but others are not. AND you can't really mush up broccli (sp). Its a great way for them to get a taste for veggies and to self feed which frees you up to cook dinner etc.:) Also good for teething. I think it is worth the cost. Use coupons from Babies R Us OR just go to Target, Walmart etc.

My daughter loved hers, and we could feed her all the fresh fruits with out worrying about her choking on it, its a mess to clean up most of the time bcuz it gets all sticky and gets the child sticky but its good bcuz they get the fruit they need. I personally loved it and used mine often.

I was given one and have used it only a couple times, although my son liked it. I put frozen berries in it and he liked being able to gnaw on them. It can be handy when they're teething.

Hi Keli,
My grandson used one it was wonderful. He was able to try new foods safely get the taste but not get a big chunk and choke. Plus during teething they can chew something with taste. He really liked it and they are worth buying. I hope this helps.

I found this a great tool for teething. I not only put some fruit (like grapes) in it, but we also put crushed ice in it. Both my girls loved it (way better than the traditional teethers). Very messy though, so we usually used it outside when we gave it to them.

Kelli,

I didn't read all the other responses so I don't know if you've already recieved an answer like this but... I had one and I LOVED it! I would purchase frozen fruit and put a couple chunks in it (as large as would fit) and when my kids were teething they loved to gnaw on them!

For cleanup I just took it apart, turned the mesh bag inside out threw the leftover pulp into the trash and ran all the pieces through the dishwasher.

I never thought it was very messy. We always used it in the high chair, and of course baby needed to be wiped up a bit with a washcloth when he was finished. Maybe the fact that we started with frozen fruit made a difference.
