Any Experience with Malabsorption in Child?

We are about to embark on testing for malabsorption issues. My son is 4 and very tiny for his age. He is hungry ALL the time and has a lot of the symptoms of malabsorption, just waiting for our GI appt. We thought he was just lactose intolerant and went to the allergist first but he confirmed this was likely a GI/malabsorption issue and recommended avoiding dairy and seeing the GI. So my question...is this fixable? What is the treatment for malabsoprtion and will he start growing/gaining weight after?

What can I do next?

I don't really know anything about this topic except that when I was planning on getting preggo they ran some tests on me, based on my sisters pregnancy problems. I had a thick blood disorder that also kept me from absorbing B vitamins. (No wonder I felt 80 all the time) Its treated with a simple pill that gives me 16,000 units of B vitamins and something to make me absorb it.
Hopefully, that is all it will take for your little one- a good diagnosis and an easy fix. I will keep both of you in my prayers.

Celiac is the first thing that comes to mind but I am sure there are other issues that I don't know about. Do not try to do a gluten free diet before any testing or diagnosis because it can mess up the results. A good resource for information is www.celiacdisease.net. It's very fixable as long as he sticks to the GF diet (assuming Celiac is the issue). Good luck! I hope he's on the mend soon.

We've worked a lot with malabsorption and failure-to-thrive. There is something you can try before you do all of this testing. Doesn't matter if it turns out to be celiac or anything else. Email me.
BTW my former neighbors live in Apex!

I don't have first hand experience with malabsorbtion but have done a lot of reading on gluten-free diet and I know that with celiac's disease, you are unable to absorb nutrients. Definitely get him tested. A good resource is http://www.wholelifenutrition.net/. I have their cookbook and have been switching to a gluten-free diet and have noticed that in doing so I feel so much better all around.

Going gluten free would probably help, but hopefully the GI dr. will know and be familiar and steer you in the right direction.

I just read The Paleo Solution by Robb Wolf this weekend, very enlightening. It's at Costco right now - I highly recommend it! I recall him touching on malabsorption - if I get a chance, I'll go and see if I can find that part and tell you what it says. Just don't be discouraged if going gf is what you have to do - it really is so much better for us!
