I am using the Bummis cloth diapering kit and it is SO bulky on my four week old, he cannot even bend over, he is like a huge marshmallow man! Is there another cloth diaper that has a thinner cover, something that you can still snuggle with? I really want to cloth diaper, but I gotta tell you, this kit is not for me!

What can I do next?

Fitteds are probably going to be the best for a newborn. I really like Thirsties Fab Fitteds with a Thirsties cover. A lot of people like Kissaluvs fitteds for a newborn, but I think they're bulkier than the Thirsties. Any cloth diaper is going to be bulkier than a disposable, but I do agree that Bummis really isn't that great! Prefolds - if you want to do those, Green Mountain Diapers have the best prefolds. Thirsties covers are my favorite, no matter what type of fitted or prefold is underneath! Also, the thirsties covers tend to fit a bit big on my daughter - she's 10 months and still wearing a size small! So, I'd get a few extra smalls for your newborn.
Peppermint Baby Boutique in Richardson sells Thirsties Fab Fitteds and covers, as well as Bum Genius 3.0 pocket diapers, and some prefolds and even some flats. They can show you how to fold a prefold or a flat for the trimmest fit if you need. Also, babycenter.com has a great cloth diapering group with a lot of helpful people. If you need any other information, you can email me!

Hello! Fuzzibunz can be nice and trim - just depends on your inserts. My kids always were pretty bulky, because I used prefolds. Is this what you were putting inside the Bummis? If trimness is important, you will probably going to want to try fitted diapers under the cover or a couple of diaper doublers. Good luck!

I ordered some Qbaby diapers on-line. They are cheap...about $5 each but so far they have held up well. I have already got my money's worth out of them. They are slim and trim all in ones but seem to be very absorbant. They are the cheaper version of Fuzzi-buns...same style and concept but with velcro instead of snaps. Hope this helps. I got mine on Ebay.

I love Fuzzi Bunz and Bum Genius and Thirsties. They are my favorites. Fuzzi Bunz are my favorite!!! IMO fitted diapers are more bulky. I personally hate fitted diapers. The fitted I have I never use. My experience is that in the newborn stage and baby stage they are going to be and look more bubble butt because the babies are so little. My toddler looks more trim in cloth.

Hi T.,

Congratulations on your sweet baby boy. I'm on my third kiddo, but this is the first time I've used cloth diapers. I bought bum genius fitted diapers and I LOVE them. They are so simple and not too big with the single insert. My baby was HUGE though so that probably made a difference. The cool thing about the bumgenius is that you only need the one diaper as the baby grows. they have snaps and you just move the snaps as baby grows. You can order them from cotton babies. THere's my two cents. Good luck and keep looking. It's amazing how much better for baby's bum the cloth is! My little one has very sensitive skin and when we've used disposables for traveling we can really tell the difference.

Hi T.,
You have some great advice already. I just want to add that I used the old-fashioned chinese pre-folds with a cover. They seemed enormous on my kids for the first 6 weeks or so, but once the baby grew, it sort of balanced out. Also, I liked having that big bum to rest on my arm while I was carrying baby. Whenever they were wearing disposables as infants, I felt I nothing to hold on to!

Don't throw in the towel. If you want to try pre-folds with covers, I have some that I can just give you. I think we're done having biological children, so I can spare a couple for you to try.

Good luck!

I've heard great things about gdiapers! gdiapers themselves aren't cloth but my neighbor buys their covers and puts in a cloth insert while they are at home and uses the gdiaper insert when away from home.
