Any Advise on How to Clear up Eczema

My 13 month old daughter had eczema pretty bad when she was about 3 months old. I switched her laundry soap, bath wash, and watched what I was eating when I was breastfeeding. It took a few months but it cleared up. She stopped breastfeeding about a month ago and we switched her to whole milk. She seems to be tolerating the milk well but her eczema came back a few weeks ago and is all over her face. I don't know if it is the milk or just the change in season but does anybody have any advise in how to treat the ezcema? I have tried tea tree oil and various lotions with no success. I do not feel comfortable using cortizone cream on her due to her age and with the eczema being on her face. Thanks.

Hello L.,

My girls, ages 6 and 4 also have eczema that seems to flare up as the seasons change. I recently found that Super-Lube by Merle Norman works wonders! My mother and grandmother have used this product for years and I have too but it wasn't until a couple of weeks ago my mom happened to be visiting and my youngest had a terrible outbreak on her hands, arms and face - my mom had super lube in her bag and by morning it was 99% clear, not to mention it really feels great. No more expensive Rx for us. Hope this helps!

I agree that Aquaphor bu Eucerine works the best for my daughter. I put it on her face in the morning and before bed. Cetaphil lotion is great too. Good luck!

You can try this lotion from sprouts or health store- shikai
dry skin therapy. it comes in a green bottle, it's great for eczema. they also have a steroid free/ cortizone free cream for it, called florazone. I would try taking her off the milk and try almond milk and soy milk instead. cow milk can actually be so harmful! Good luck! (I have ezcema myself) use to have it on my face as a young child as well. dont use cortizone or steroids on her!!!

Hi L.,
Ok, so the milk will bring on the eczema...
AND there are these WONDERFUL products made by Arbonne that are SENSATIONAL!!! I found the products just weeks before my daughter was born 4 years ago and I started using a small handful of their products... the whole reason I got into it was because I wanted safe products to put on my daughter, then at 3 weeks old she turned apple red from head to toe and I took her to the doctor and he automatically wrote a prescription for a steroid cream... (which I refused and he made me feel like a bad mother for doing so, poor little thing... it was so bad I didn't want to touch her body in fear that I would burn her skin... But I didn't want her on steroids either!)
He told me to bring her in, in 3 days and if it was worse, he advised I put her on the prescription... well it got worse! I called all my nurse friends which are also arbonne friends and asked what to put on her!!! anything!!! he ears were bleeding! her toes were bleeding! her fingers were bleeding! the back of her neck was bleeding!!! OMG!!! I was frantic!
They didn't advise me to put anything other than the baby line on her because the company says to use only the baby line for the first 6 months of life, then the other products are ok to use...

Well anyway I had the RE9 set at home which is their anti aging face set and I had read that the night cream hydrated as well as protects against trans-dermal water loss which is ( water we lose through our skin) and so I weighed the options... steroids... or a pure, safe and beneficial product...
well... I DIDN'T take her to the doctor... and I used the night cream on her WHOLE BODY...
once at night right before bed... once in the morning, and as needed (when it absorbed) on the raw areas...
the first morning: she awoke tan colored, she still had rough skin and little bumps but she was tan not red!
morning day 2: she awoke tan colored, no bumps, but still a little rough not baby butt soft but not sand paper either, morning day 3: completely 100% brand new baby!!!
I took her into the doctor... he asked what I used... I told him and he rolled his eyes!!!
Hey, I know kids that have been on topical steroid creams for months and months and still have problems...
you know I only put it on her if there is a flare up ( which she rarely has... but we use arbonne's lotions daily)
One major thing about these products that I believe did the trick besides the ingredients in the anti aging night cream... these products are NOT FORMULATED with MINERAL OIL, which creates an occlusive barrier like a glove on the skin, not allowing it to breath or absorb nutrients or anything for that matter, nothing goes in nothing comes out! (our skin is one of the largest ORGANS of the body... and it removes toxins just like the rest of the body) THEY ARE NOT FORMULATED with ANIMAL products OR By- products... these products are created with LIVING INGREDIENTS... the product's ingredients stay alive until the are ABSORBED by the skin... Death brings death... (deterioration of the cells) and... life brings LIFE! (promotes cell proliferation... new cell growth!) ALSO FORMULATED WITHOUT FRAGRANCES AND DYES!!! #1 ingredients that case allergic reactions!!! and skin sensitivities!!! and the list of formulated without... goes on and on including no preservatives and if you want a whole detailed list I'd be happy to share...
You can order the products through someone personally or online yourself... but if you would like to try the stuff first and you DO NOT HAVE AN ARBONNE CONSULTANT, (because if you do you ask them I'm not here to steal people away) I will send you enough samples to use for a week to see if you see a difference.
Just send me a private message if you would like the samples or any more info.
I wish you and your baby girl the best of luck!!
Sincerely,
~N.

My son also had eczema bad as an infant, and now he gets it on his face with the change of seasons (sometimes on his hands, too). My doc recommended Aquaphor made by Eucerin. It is amazing stuff, and clears it up in just a day or two. I bought it at WalMart, and you can find it almost anywhere. By the way, it is much more effective than hydrocortizone.

Hi L.,

I would start her on raw diet of liver friendly foods, such as blueberries, carrots, oranges, tangerines, grapefruit, lemons, limes, onion, broccoli, asparagus, red cabbage, cauliflower, green beans, tomatoes, bell peppers (green), Romain lettuce, apples, beats (raw fresh), avocado, blackberries, raspberries, ginger, radishes, and strawberries... All uncooked, raw and unprocessed.. Eliminate as much processed foods as you can, eliminate salt, and sugar... If giving her juices, by 100 percent juice, no added anything...

Tea tree is wonderful, you may also dilute a little Tea Tree and a little Lavender (great for the skin) in a lotion that is natural, organic paraben free.

Read Diagnostic Face Reading and Holistic Healing by Roger Bezanis... This will answer many of the questions you are asking right now..

Hi L.,

I know how frustrating eczema can be. I had trouble with it for years. I tried all kinds of things. Finally I found something that works. I do not sell these products, but I can show you where you can order them. I use a lotion called Renew and I also changed my laundry soap which I think makes a huge difference. (What good is finding a lotion that clears it up if you re-irritate your skin with your clothing.) The products do contain tea tree oil, but it is the combination that makes a difference. I understand your concern for using cortizone cream especially with your daughter being so young.

All I know is after years of searching, this combination is the only thing that has worked for me and also my grandson who developed eczema as a baby so we solved that problem really quick. :)

If you want more information, I would be happy to answer your questions. My email is below.

Best wishes,

my son suffered from excema when he was an infant, and still does!! He has allergies to cats and some foods can cause him to have a break out. Like someone said below, my doctor told me that when his excema flared up, he needed to take a warm bath and then immediately get treated with Aquafor. Aquafor has worked WONDERS. In just a couple of days, it's cleared up. It's thick and icky, so I usually just put it on before bed. Good luck!

Aww, L., my name is L. too, and my heart goes out to you! My son, who is now 5, also had eczema until about age 3 1/2. Around his ankles, and behind the knees mostly. Who knows why certain children get it and others don't...my 22-mnth old daughter has never develped it. You're doing a great job by ruling things out though! How smart of you to reach out to other moms too! I'm rarely on this site, but today I decided to log on...so glad I can offer help to someone today....

Our pediatrician always wanted to give us the steriod creams, but I knew those were not good, and that I'd rather try to deal w/it naturally and have a few ocassionl flare-ups than use those creams. I was never able to really get a "handle" on it though until I found Arbonne! Actually, I should say it found me:) About 4 years ago, I launched a home-based business w/this company, and have been using their health & wellness products in my home for my whole family this whole time! All of their products are pure, safe & beneficial. If you have not heard of them, pls visit my site at www.GlowInFaith.myarbonne.com, or email me for some info...I'm honored to share. They have an incredible baby line called ABC, Arbonne Baby Care. It's a line of 5 products for sensitive skin in botanically-based, pediatrician-tested formulas that support & protect sensitive skin. All of Arbonne's products are formulated without mineral oil, which is occulsive to the skin, not allowing your skin to release toxins or retain moisture! This line will help your baby's skin retain moisture, which is crucial for those who deal w/eczema! This line also contains cedarwood oil, which is calming and has the ability to release tension and ease anxiety. It also helps relieve itching, which is a huge discomfort of this condition.

Another thing that may be of assitance to you is that I am surrounded by a team of doctors and nurses who all LOVE and use Arbonne...my sponsor's sponsor is a nurse and a mother of two young children, of which one, I believe, suffered from this condition as well.

I hope this helps you, and again, please let me know if I can provide anything else...you can also call me at ###-###-#### if you'd like. Have a blessed day!

My advice will go against the grain...but I'd try her at a lower fat milk! The liver is a big part of skin complexion and its possible the high fat cow's milk is too much for her liver to process. I know it always has been for me. :) Both of my girls, 6 & 2, have only ever had 1%...just a thought.
Good Luck.

Our daughter's eczema cleared up with ground flax seed. It's healthy anyway so it doesn't hurt to try. We would just put about a tbsp into applesauce per day. We would really notice if we skipped a day. We also used zyrtec if it got really bad under her eyes. Now she has grown out of it, so hopefully your daughter will too.

My son has had Eczema since he was an infant. Per trial and error, and advice from out pediatrician, we are able to keep it in remission, so to speak. We occasionaly use the oatmeal baths, and more so when the weather is cold, as his skin becomes more dry. We use Cetaphil soap and lotion (lotion after every bath). I don't know about switching milk causing the breakout, but I woulnd't switch from whole milk, because their bodies need the milk fat to aid in brain development.

Two of my sons developed eczema after being put on whole milk. I took them off of whole milk and put them on soy milk (with fat) and that cleared it up in one of them (also cleared up really nasty almost-diarrhea diapers). With the other one, I think it would have cleared up with removing all dairy, but I wasn't willing to go that far. Allergies to whole milk aren't uncommon in kids, so I'm betting that's what it is.

When my pediatrician asked if they were getting whole milk, I told her that I switched them to soy milk and she was fine with that.

I would try Aquaphor. You can buy a large vat of it at Costco for about $13 in their pharmacy which is a really good deal compared to what you would pay at Walgreens etc. for a much smaller tube of it. My daughter has a similar condition on her cheeks, arms and legs and I find that if I'm consistent about putting it on her she does much better.

My youngest daughter had this problem also. I tried everything and then my pediatrician recommended that I use Cetaphil (then it was only a hypoallergenic facial cleanser, now they have a whole line of things). The doc told me to use ONLY this to bathe her- including washing her hair. It left the baby smelling a little like wet diaper all the time, but boy did it work! I used it until she consistently had clear skin and used again any time she had a flare up. Our whole family had skin issues so we were all using it at one time or another .
My daughter turned 20 years old this year and I am proud to say that on October 25th she presented me with my first grandchild- a 7 lb., incredible baby boy. He already has excema on his face so I have the old Cetaphil waiting should my daughter ask my advice.

having her tested for a milk allergy would probably be a good idea, but I know my kids' excema always got a lot worse at the change of seasons. What always worked best for us was oatmeal baths and Eucerin lotion. When my sons had a really terrible year his doctor put him on steriods for a week along with benadryl at night in comibnation with all the lotions and baths we normalls did. If it doesn't get better with at home treatments, see your doctor. And most kids usually grow out of this by age five. My kids are 3 and 6 now and they've both outgrown it.

HI.

I know you have already gotten this advice but I have dealt with eczema for most of my life. Eucerin Cream is the best. Although it is on her face - you can not use this method - but if it is on any other part of her body - I put of ton of Eucerin cream on the spot and then wrap it in plastic wrap - usually a few hours if not longer. By the next day it is gone.

Vitamin E oil is great for the skin and the face. I just take a vitamin E capsule and cut it open and put it on my face and my baby's - it works wonders to.

Milk can cause eczema. So you might want to cut that out and see if it helps.

I am not sure about the tea tree oil - I know that is great for antibaterial - but it is also very drying.

Good luck and I hope you figure it out.

Requests for eczema always get many and varied responses! So I'll throw in my two cents for you to consider:
high vitamin cod liver oil has worked miracles in my experience
raw cow or goat milk
coconut oil internally and externally
NOT Petroleum Jelly (it's really called that)
lacto fermented vegetables and real food probiotics
a diet of traditional foods

Hello L.,

You could try keeping your daughter off of cow dairy for at least a few weeks and see if the eczema clears up. My son is sensitive to cow dairy; I had to stop using it when he was a baby because he was getting eczema and was upset all the time (like colic, but it was the dairy), and our doctor recommended we stop giving him dairy and the change was dramatic. I used a combination of goats milk, goats and sheep's cheese (hard sheep's cheese tastes very close to cow cheddar cheese) and rice milk from then on for both my son and my daughter (his older sister), as I noticed that they did much better physically when they don't have very much cow dairy -- less colds, etc. As they have gotten older (7 and 9) they have gradually eaten a bit more dairy here and there (pizza, mac & cheese, etc.) but we still do mostly goat's milk and cheese at home and they rarely get sick. Best of luck, Shirl H

I haven't checked all of the responses to see if this was mentioned, but I have dealt with eczema for years. What really works well is getting Vitamin E liquid pills, popping them with a pin and putting the oil on the affected areas. Double check with your ped Dr, but it should be safe for infants

My daughter was born w/eczema also. Her doctor advised me to use very small amounts of hydrocortizone, which worked. But like you I worried about using it. I started buying mustela products from Babies R'us. They sell products especially for eczema(sensitive skin). My daughter is now 3yoa & I Still use the baby oil bath wash on her plus their scented lotion for Sensitive skin and she hardly ever gets a break out.

HI L.- i know what you are going through. We were introduced to arbonnes baby care line and it cleared up right away. YOu want to stay away from anything that has petroleum etc. All of their products are chemical free etc. I can send you more info via email if you would like- being you are a labor and delivery nurse you will appreciate the info:)
You are on the right track with diet too- we found the products helped and did not worry about food issues. In some cases it is food related but with our daughter it was not- she just needed a really good quality product to help her sensitive skin. Milk is huge culprit though and we switched to goats milk and it all worked out great!
Good luck,

STOP using anything topically that contains mineral oil or petrolatum or parabens - and also avoid synthetic fragrances and colors - just to name a few. Try Cetaphil Cream. You get it in a 1 lb. tub at Wal-Mart or Wal-Greens in the beauty section. It has helped both of my boys a ton. It is best to put it on when the skin is still a tiny bit damp to help lock in the moisture. It may take a couple of days but you will see and feel the difference.

A friend's daughter uses ONLY Antibacterial Cream from Southwest Lifestyle. It's the only thing that clears up the kid's skin AND keeps the bottom from getting rashed. Her pediatritian told her to keep using that as nothing else worked.

When you are there you can also look at Lotion Bars. A lot of folks have had great success using those as well. Just use the unscented to begin with.

Eczema is not fun, but it is managable. My son had eczema quite bad most of infancy, toddlerhood. I tried LOTS of natural remedies not wanting to use cortizone like you. In the end, homeopathic calendula, which has many forms and helps so many skin problem. I bought mine at Sprouts or Whole Foods. When eczema was at it's worst, I bathed him in oatmeal water.
Every child is different, but eczema ended up being a key indicator of the food allergies my son has, so it may or may not be something to think about as time goes on. Mama will always know best for her little ones. Feel free to ask me more if you like.

I believe it could be seasonal, not what you are feeding her. When my son had eczema, we used Eucerin Cream daily after his bath. In about a week, it cleared up. Do not use lotions as they have alcohol in them that tend to 'dry' up the skin. You need a 'cream' base moisturizer such as Eucerin. Hope this helps. :-)
